Absolutely an improvement over Diablo III’s plot!

In scope and vision and storytelling, it passes all previous Diablo games.
(I have completed the story acts for Fractured Peaks and Dry Steppes.)

I like that the story is more down to earth, or down in Sactuary’s everyday (horrific) life. It is about the people in the world, their choices and the consequences of them.
This is a change from the story of the grand hero versus the big bad, as it was in previous installments of the series, and I like it very much.
Diablo IV has depth and meaning and tells a story of a struggle the player can relate to.

Writing realistic, deep characters is hard, telling their stories in a game? So much harder!
That makes Diablo IV’s storyline and character development so much more impressive.

I look forward to seeing how it will evolve with each season and expansion.

Hail Lilith, Blessed Mother :relieved:

How is the plot in a Diablo game improved by not having the main character, Diablo, in the game? Honest question.

i didnt care so much. lilith was evil enough

Let me begin by clarifying
I never think that Diablo was supposed to be the main character. I believe that was always meant to be the protagonist (the hero), which the player controlled, but Diablo certainly was the main antagonist (the adversary of the hero).

Now that I have described my perceived difference between main character and antagonist, I can go on to attempt to answer your question:

“How is the plot in a Diablo game improved by not having the main character, Diablo, in the game?”

I think it gives the writers of the story more freedom to delve into the lore of Sanctuary and discover or invent some unique antagonists, like we have seen Lilith. This makes the plot less predictable, as we cannot know which antagonist will appear next.

While the main antagonist used to be Diablo, the world of Sanctuary always had the potential to be so much more. In Diablo IV, I think the developers have delivered on this potential.

We have had main antagonists other than Diablo before
Like when the role of main antagonist was passed to Baal in Diablo II: Lord of Descruction and Malthael in Diablo III: Reaper of Souls.

Baal was an epic antagonist for an expansion boss. Mostly because he appeared right in front of us without us even knowing it, far head of his reveal and even after he was defeated, he won. That is a bad ass move!

Malthael was a lot more complex because of his different roles in the lore, prior to the expansion, but his threat - and ultimately the consequences of his actions - was and were less perceivable for most players, I think. (This may be because additional Diablo III expansions were scrapped in favor for starting development of Diablo IV)

Finally, on the subject of Diablo not being in Diablo IV
I would be very surprised if Diablo will never be part of Diablo IV - But as the developers said: “For now, Lilith is the immediate threat”

…the OP has to be trolling. Right?

Agree, it was great.

D4 is an awesome game really.
It has all I liked in D2 and D3. Cant judge for HL so far, but the game looks promising.
The way I understand it for the final bosses (and the lack of Diablo as final boss):
they will add new bosses in the future expansions. And Diablo will eventually be the last to be added. They planned to have a D4 with a very long life span. Fine with me.

Cut off kid’s hand without any reason or further consequence and explain it by some surprise drowner’s infection? What?

Exiting quest objectives to collect ingredients for tea or other shit? Because without tea primal evil cannot be defeated?

Imprison Mephisto into soulstone that already occupied by Astarot? Suck it blackstone! Next time they will imprison Diablo into teacup.

Inarius pierced Lilith with a spear and she just ignored that fact, then pierced Inarius with the same spear and hes dead. Logic? Сonsistency? Pfff.

Imprisoned Mephisto still talks in wolf form and open portals? What the difference?

Not speaking about Donan’s death. Horadrim casually huggin corpses on walls of hell…

Agree - really engaging and so much world content. I don’t get these folks who don’t see this aspect - its as if they have never read a book and thus have no ability for imagination and think the game is all about something you beat and complete.

And, some folks to think Diablo means that Diablo will be the main villain in the game after IV in the series is just absolutely “Brain Dead” and then complain about it - lol. Diablo means the “Diablo Universe”

Yeah! I am presently on my 4th play through, it really is a fun campaign.

Huge replay value.

I am loving trying each hero Vs the key “hard fights” as it were. It’s really good.

The cutscenes are all 10/10.

So glad you loved it! I can’t get enough.

I enjoyed most of the story, act 4 felt more like a way to flex the mcs strength instead of seomthing useful, but I did enjoy the rest.

I am hoping that there will be an expansion where Lilith will be brought back. I imagine there will be something story related to her death as regret seems to be a strong theme throughout the game, and I’m pretty sure the mc regrets killing Lilith at the end… that might just be me though.

I never really viewed Lilith as a major evil (unlike Baal or Diablo where they just slaughtered everyone). She seems a lot more accepting and ultimately enabling people… which usually leads them to hurt others, but her character could be easily switched to something positive.

I think Lilith would make an excellent angel.

Oh, you just misunderstand the difference between a brand and the campaign.

Diablo is the brand. Diablo the character DOES feature in the game, too.

If you finish the campaign, and pay attention, you are definitely proven incorrect. (No spoilers)

Otherwise, thanks for contributing to the discussion.

Lilith,.like Asteroth, cannot be slain by mortal hands. She will reform over time.

If they are basing it on Tanar’ri (blizzard often steal from other brands, StarCraft is 40k, diablo, is DnD etc), then she will be banished to a non-corporeal form and eventually “exist” again. :+1:

Well fair points, but I guess F me for wanting diablo in a diablo game right? I mean, it’s my fault that i assumed we would get to see him without having to dish out for another dlc. I am so sorry forum overlords for wanting diablo to be in his own game. I will go in my corner and sit in silence and await for the glorious opportunity to pay again so i can finally see diablo in a diablo game.

Honestly see again Diablo as the final boss for the umpteenth time, it would have bored me

I completely agree with you. Then why play a series that is focused on him?

Maybe because it is in the same scenario and story that connects with the previous ones?

Again, fair and i totally understand. I never once not understood the arguments that other people made, as they are fair. I am though, blown away by the fact that people don’t seem to care about the fact that diablo is missing (at launch) in a diablo game. that is , let’s say, saddening. But it is what it is i guess. Thanks for being civil at least though :*

Because you worry too much about the name, which for 3 chapters (and that’s a lot for blizzard) has always been diablo the final boss
Since you also have to sell the game and the story, don’t you think that maybe by re-presenting the usual final boss many (including me) wouldn’t have liked it? Also because after 3 chapters it doesn’t make much sense, you kill him you kill him, but he comes back
