Diablo 4 freezes at the moment when the choice of character should appear

I went into the game, played for hours, left, and now when I enter the game, it freezes at the moment when the choice of characters should appear. Someone faced similar?

Same here! Can confirm that “bug” appeared somewhere at Sunday to Monday night. There was some small update/hotfixes if Im not mistaken. When you open the game and you reach character screen the game itself freezes for around 30-40s. After that your characters appear, buttons are clickable and its basically all good.

A lil off-topic:
Why are we playing with so high ping as well? Arent the servers placed in Germany as World of Wacraft ones for example? In WoW I have 30ms on a constant, considering the fact that Im from eastern Europe. In Diablo 4 Im running on about ~54 and even in some dungeons or zones it goes up to 70-80. And before someone says its my ISP, two other friends(one from Spain and other from Sweden) confirmed that their ping is higher than what we have usually in WoW

Can you please open the file LocalPrefs.txt, which can be found in your Documents folder under Diablo IV, and search for the line SafeMode “0”. Change this line to SafeMode “1”. Save the file, exit and load up Diablo IV to see if it helps.

Hi Dresiaron, i changed the Safemode to “1”, but it didn’t help. B299CA25-F359-4099-AFDC-ED33C7286655 . Is there anything else i can try? I’ve got as far as watching the opening cut scene, but hadn’t created a character, turned game off, had dinner, returned to pc, now can’t get past character select and modify without crashing to desktop. The game is trying to start me on “Hardcore”, but haven’t even played any other difficultly yet. Did you want a copy of the Fenris error log?

When changed to “1” the moment the game is launched, it changes back to “0” instantly with no present results

Same problem. Game starts and logs in pretty normaly, then crashes right before it shows the characters list. That crach happens 100% of the time, the game never makes it past that point. The game worked before the launch day update. That’s right, a 90 euro deluxe edition that is completely unplayable.

By the way, changing the SafeMode “0” value to 1 doesn’t work because the game switches it back to “0” by itself, and (interestingly enough) the crash happens even if the LocalPrefs.txt file is changed to “read-only” and the value remains “1”

Have the same problem, Necr char.

Can you maybe explain what “safemode” does… and why it’s supposed to help? I’ve set my localprefs to 1 and it does fix some issues, but now it’s set to 1 not the default 0… how do I know if it’s causing other problems now?

As to the bug… the game freezes… does it actually “freeze” or does it just “pause” because if all it does is pause… then it’s not a bug.

almost the same, but after unfreeze there is an info that connection is broken and trying to reconnect. But cannot reconnect at all…

hey guys, all of you who have crashes, do you have amd cpu??

Same problem, Necromancer character. I’ve tried on PC, Steam Deck and PS5 with the same account/character:

  • PC: If Necromancer is the first character to be shown, I get a black screen. Sometimes alt+tab makes it load the character. One of the times it loaded, I created other character and put it first. After that, the character selection screen loads and I’m able to select the Necromancer and play.
  • Steam Deck: The same, but after creating the second character, if I select the Necromancer the game crashes. With the other character I’m able to play just fine.
  • PS5: Never had a problem to show the character selection screen even when it only had the Necromancer, and no problem to play with it.

Thanks for testing. Sorry for not giving context last night. We are currently investigating issues where freezes in the main screen happen, when using Nvidia cards. As this is not all Nvidia cards and not even consistent with specific cards only, makes it harder to investigate.

The safemode has been suggested by our developers and sadly we in Customer Service are not sure, what happens when toggled, so we can only speculate on what it’s supposed to do.

For now, if you have an Nvidia card and are affected by this, we can only ask you to continue waiting.

Have exactly the same problem since betas. Game starts, shows logos and then just freezes for 3-5 minutes on my created char screen selection. Then it unfreezes with a “reconnecting to blah-blah” tooltip and works. But still freezes in-game randomly (but rarely) when I open my inventory, trader’s inventory, starting or progressing quest dialog or just click an object in the world which displays a text (a note, a sigh etc.).
So far there are 2 theories among players: bad UI code (goes from SC2 times) and bad net code (server sending signals when you do stuff and just freezes the game). Both problems are on Blizzard side so we’re waiting for fixes.

Also had a bug when video settings didn’t save and I had to watch intro all the time. Fixed it by removing “read only” from LocalPrefs.txt

Hello,

The same issue here, with necromancer selection only.
Is there any way to solve the issue, or any info we can provide to help the support ?

I have the exact same problem. I also have Nvidia GPU and a necromancer as my only character.

My game freezes every time it gets To the character selection screen, and I usually have to wait for approx. 3 - 5 minutes, and the it starts To reconnect. Some times it unfreezes after the reconnect, but often it just shuts down the application and returns me To the desktop.
