High Latency - Randomly or...not, its infuriating (EDIT)

I have been having some bad latency issues for the last few weeks and it seems to start almost always (at least from what I can tell, when I am gaming) around 18:30 EU time. This is when I have it the worst, even now at time of posting.

Firstly I am from South Africa, so playing on latency of 200-300 is not strange and works fine. However, for some reason around this time, my latency almost always shoots up to 1-2.5k at what seems random times, but mostly and more consistently from around 17:30, to 20:00 is when I experience it the most. It does happen on other occasions also but far less and not for that long. The 18:30 stint however is by far the worst.

The latency does improve when moving around it the game world, almost like I am transitioning between servers or something and some servers are simply providing better latency, while others are VERY bad.

Its also not a frame related issue, frames are good and constant above 100 or more.

I have been doing ping plotter tests consistently to several servers, some local other international and my ping and jitter are good even during these times. I have nothing else happening on my network and things are good. I believe this is a blizzard related issue and think my idea of jumping between good and bad servers is whats happening.

Yesterday I was invited by a random person to do a torment boss, I was having some latency issues again and told this person, however when I joined his world and game, my latency was down to the regular 200 and I could play 100% fine.

How do I resolve this issue, is Blizzard aware of anything which could cause this. I had some of these issues back in the day with D4 but nothing remotely as bad as now. Please advise…thanks

NOTE: I did remove the cross play option way back when latency issues came up on D4, so its not that, its still off…

EDIT: 27/09/2024 and latency is still a major issue for me. For me it happens seemingly randomly, I can’t figure out why. I have done WB fights with no issues then sometime later the latency is so bad I can’t move and end up getting killed sometime in the fight. I have nothing pulling bandwidth in the background and the moment I TP back to town the latency clears up (usually, but very rarely its also high), which tells me it can’t be on my ISP side of thing…or at least knowing what I do about this stuff, I can’t logically figure out how my internet is the cause.

Even during the new content for Season 5, doing Infernal Horde or whatever its called, I have had terrible latency in there, big fight, small fight doesn’t matter, soon as I TP out its fine again…then other times its fine in there and the event goes smoothly.

I have read that the Umbracrux for Rogues can cause latency, but then I am not sure if its frame or not as I never play that class or had that weapon to test it. Still if something like that is possible, it stands to reason there could be a multitude of reasons that stem from Blizzard, design or implementation systems that could cause the issue…no?

For the life of me I can’t figure it out, all I can think is that there is some switching of servers or instances happening constantly and Blizzard servers switch players back and forth as the servers get full/empty and sometimes they just give bad response times…I am from South Africa so maybe its possible? How else can I resolve this?

I experience the exact same thing, i would be in town, teleport to cave and everything is still ok, then i would teleport back to town and ping shoots sometimes over 2000 ms. I would go back to same place as before and then it shoots up again. Clearly we connect to different servers or blocks when going into certain stages or events. Its been like this now for last 2 weeks since the latest patch. ISP says no problem, Blizzard will just no say anything except take my money.

Same here. Also, I’m trying to finish the main story and got kicked back to the char select after some cutscenes. So frustrating.

Same here. Game has turned to shit. I wanted to give this new season a try after a long break, but somehow this game has managed to become even worse. It is unplayable.

If you get it from game pass then its worth to play just for fun, otherwise is not worth buying the game, its alot weaker then Diablo 3 with many bugs/glitches and lags as hell with high chances to d/c. Played several hours and its just dissapointing, when you mount/dismount have chances to encounter lag and leads to d/c, those never happend to me in Diablo 3 before, perhaps its engine issue or bad bad scripting or too much things around, even more Tyrael might spikes creats ALOT of lag, with 4080 and ryzen 7 with 32gb of ram, this game succeed to create alot of problems. Think I’m done with this.

I am also from South Africa experiencing latency spikes of over 3000 to about 7000 especially in helltides and World Boss events and well actually everywhere except for the town. I use fiber at home so it is not my connection as every other game runs smoothly. The rubber band is insane. You cannot pick up loot drops thus losing loot as well. It is also during those times you have mentioned it is almost as if there are to many people connecting to one server or something that causes like a type of clutter throttle or something. It almost like their game cannot handle the amount of players connecting to their servers. Very disappointing actually.

ok, so at the start of season 5 there is an issue with latency, i believe this is directly caused by very high cpu usage in addition to other things. before s5 my cpu temp was running about 140 degrees f. with D4, OBS, bot, and other games running in background. this season my cpu temp spiked to a blistering 220 degrees f. with all the same stuff running. the problem is definately the game. because i tested this theory by opening fallout76, the first decendant, bot, obs, and a bunch of smaller games and left them running in the background with no laag and no cup overload. cpu temp seemed to stay consistant at 162 f. Here are some steps you can try to reduce temps and minimize laag …
#1 . make sure your system is CLEAN !!! (no dust, nothing blocking fins or fans)

#2 . check your system processes to see what is sucking the resources

#3 . if you dont already have one, invest the money into a liquid cooling system for your cpu/gpu/ram. (if installed correctly this should drop your cpu temp by 30-50 degrees f or more. (this will reduce stress on cpu/gpu/ram and possibly reduce latency)

#4 . check your modem/router and reset them (this is usually the #1 cause for latency issues) (iot devices suck alot of bandwidth this includes security cameras so try seperating them to a different router if there is no change)

#5 . if using wifi, switch to a hardline and make sure you have a good cat7 or 8 cable (wifi is unreliable and can cause major latency when playing games)

#6. check the game files (sometimes corruption of game data can occuur and cause issues) re install if needed.

#7. check the game system requirements and make sure your system meets or exceeds the minimum requirements to run the game.(I know this is a givein but you would be suprised at how many times ive helped people and the game they were trying to play with standard settings would Laag like crazy because their system was sub par)

#8 . change graphics settings in diablo4 to default or low ( sometimes this will help troubleshoot issues such as latency or a failing gpu)

#9. if you have checked and verified all these and everything checks out fine and still are experiencing laag you would probably need to reach out to a Professional technition for assistance (Dont reachout to a buddy unless they do it for a living. Pros are trained and go through tons of schooling to diagnose and troubleshoot underlying issues and will give you a detailed report.)

I hope this helps you all experiencing issues related to laag.
and just an fyi im running a core i5gen 11 (overclocked) with an nvidia 3050(overclocked) and no laag. cpu temp is consistant at 165 degrees f running at default game settings.

Thanks for the reply, these steps are all good and well, I have done them all and then some. It makes no difference for me, its not a loading or frame drop issue, its clearly latency that spikes during particular events, sometimes its predictable other times its not.

Usually in my experience, a frame spike or drops are predictable during busy events where there is lot of processing going on, it makes sense as your system has to work hard. Even data usage will go up somewhat, but we talking about most people these days having fibre optic with decent bandwidth…and then even then there are times its smooth and great then other times its not. One thing that is seemingly consistent though (like 99%) is that when you TP out and back to town, the latency drops and smooths out…these don’t make sense and cause (for me at least) me to believe its more than client side issues.

Helltides seem connected to a lot of the latency I see before and after they start and end.
World updates will register even when you are not in their vicinity or them being visible and I’ve noticed their presence doesn’t seem to be noticeable on the map immediately when they used to.

The servers are definitely a little below the standard Blizzard think D4 should operate on.
