Hi!
Here is what i going on with staff: As Sorcerer I go to wardrobe to change appearance of staff… ok it works… When I remove the staff and put another item in the hand (dagger…), transmog addition on is gone on the staff when I return it in the hand. It happens all the time.

Yeah… this is annoying and has bee a while…
Not that it helps, but the reasoning behind is as follows, I reckon.
The wardrobe is not a transmogrification of the item (unlike D3), but a cosmetic skin on your character. If the skin is no longer valid (because you change an item for example) it is discarded. Equipping the original item back doesn’t help because the skin was on your character and has been discarded.
To help you can save “cosmetic loadout” so to speak in the wardrobe. I guess that’s what the slots are for
