Melee Classes Need Better Generators

One of the inherent issues that make melee classes like Druid and Barb so weak is that they actually HAVE to use basic attacks its not just something they spec into cos the tree forces it.

They’re forced into a builder-spender playstyle so it takes ages for them to ramp up and then when they do they basically have a few decent big hits in between a whole bunch of wet noodle hits because they have to keep cycling builder and spender. So they don’t have decent reliable consistent damage, which is why they take so long to kill things and move through the game.

One thing I really feel needs to be done to atleast slightly improve their standing is to buff/improve the generator (basic) skills for these classes.

Don’t know about barb but druid has node that increases 30% spirit generation. And it has outright the best basic skill in game, so you will want to use it anyway.

Of all the issues that I can complain about druid as it is now, resource is not 1 of them.

You’ve misunderstood what im saying, my problem isnt with the resource gain per se (though for barb it could definitely be better, either generate more, cost less or take away the degen) my issue is that we need to GENERATE resource so we are FORCED to actually use the basic skills and for the melee classes in particular, they all suck in that they dont do any damage. Frenzy is nice on barb for the speed at which you can stack some things but it still is just chip damage and Storm Strike for druid is nice because it generates a lot and has an aoe effect, one of the only basics if i recall that has any aoe, but they still do no dmg (both barb and druid, i have played both and tested all out on both) so we are forced to use weak skills in our rotations that mean we dont do good consistent damage and we take longer to kill things.

Spirit generation as a werewolf druid felt very bad. I was constantly starved for spirit and forced to use basic attacks. Although once I got enough legendaries to buff my basic claw attack with extra speed and damage it did feel better, but the rate at which I was chomping through spirit compared to how slow it was to regain did not feel good.

yeah barb losing fury feels harsh af when you take in consideration that leap has a 17 sec CD … best take we gain fury , realistic take we lose it way slower , idk but it feels like a big ol’ arrow in the butt cheek XD

You can sustain max fury and Berserking 100% of the time with barb. Of you look there is quite a few builds that are just ridiculous. Someone even made a build with 1 skill and no gear just weapons, decimating enemies.
Feel like there is more into bard than we think. People who really dig the char made some awesome builds I would never know are possible.

The other classes are just too strong.
The barbarian and the shapeshifter druid are currently the best experiences you could have in D4 because of this principle.
The other classes don’t play any differently. They just have absurdly high damage. The lightning sorc ate up everything in a few seconds. When I found an item that increased my damage by 80% when I had a barrier active, even bosses where it took me 40 minutes and 10 deaths with the barbarian disintegrated in not even 20 seconds and I didn’t even need a healing potion.

That’s just no comparison and not because the barbarian is too weak, I just put way too much on damage and too little on protection in the beginning, because then was much better, no, the other classes are too OP.
This world needs a certain toughness, otherwise the online concept is for the cat…

With the Barbarian the game was so much more immersive because it was slower and heavier… With the Sorc the game was much flatter and more boring, just because I ran through everything and no enemy reached me.
Later I went to Fire Hydra/Flame Wall, which was a bit better because it wasn’t totally simple anymore.
But the Hydra is powerful, it has to be and stay powerful, otherwise you can’t create a game idea with it that is based on a different concept, that of the more spectator.
But still, most of the classes are simply OP.
The barbarian isn’t the problem, the rest are, except for the shapeshifters. With the shooter, I’m not sure how well it works… It worked, but was a bit boring overall. They just didn’t create a good archer here. The Ama from D2 has that down more fun.

not saying this is wrong, i agree, i minmaxed my ww barb on the last day of beta and steamrolled, shredded a butcher in 10 seconds or so and got a lucky unique cleaver drop as well on the last day so its possible to sustain etc but thats minmaxing a level 25 barb on beta that wont happen on live til max level and so the levelling process is gonna be poor unless you stop to spec into full legendaries every so often

I agree that the barb and druid builders need to be stronger than the other classes. It’ll do a lot to smooth our their weak early game without significantly impacting the endgame.

to me resource generation is an old and outdated system. remove it all together i say. we could have way more build choices if we weren’t locked into wasting one skill slot just for some arbitrary resource generation mechanic from a bygone era

I got a legendary(cant remember the name sadly) on a druid that increases my dodge chance by extra 8% (added to my normal dodge from gear and other talents) if they have 1 of my dot on them and every dodge also refunded like 12 spirit or something. So playing the plaque build with 100 faster spread talent made me unstoppable wreckingball. Because doing big pulls made dodge a lot and never use a generator. This was really a gamechanging and build defining legendary.

Yea its really frustrating when you generate enough but because you been running around dodging things you already popped your invulnerability and your dodge is on cooldown already and you used 1 or 2 potions already, still have a cooldown on leap. All because you only found 2 legos in total. Hit, hit, boom and run, repeat… no fun.
