Redesigned Codex (wish list)

Redesigned Codex

Why redesigned? What’s the problem?

  1. Right now the codex is weak and become outdated relatively soon. It is only useful when you are leveling up and legendary item are rare. Once you hit world tear 3 and especially 4, you don’t need the codex anymore, unless you are extremely unlucky.
  2. Because there are so many legendary aspects and they are added to the codex when you defeat a dungeon there are too many dungeons in the game and too many of them share the same assets. They have become repetitive and un-inspiring. Dungeons and dungeons bosses feel like auto generated Diablo 3 rifts and they have no originality nor personality.
  3. Since dungeons are so repetitive and they all feel the same I really don’t like going to dungeon to acquire aspects at the beginning of each season. It was fun only at the beginning when dungeon ware like a mystery now it is no longer fun. It would be much better if you could carry unlocked aspects over to a new season, they have minimum roll anyway.

So I would like to make the codex more appealing and also separate aspect from dungeons so there can be fewer dungeons in the game and make dungeon more unique each dungeon having a unique boss that you actually remember after defeating it.

To solve this 3 problem we would need.

  1. A way to increase aspect power in the codex but without taking away the fun of hunting for legendary item.
  2. Make dungeon more unique and memorable.
  3. A way to acquire aspects other than dungeons
  4. Carry aspect unlocked in the codex to new season

So this is my idea

Once you extract a legendary aspect you have 3 option

  1. Keep it so you can add it to another item (as is)
  2. Consume it and register it into the codex (this can be done only once for each aspect)
  3. Consume it to increase codex power.

The codex will have 100 levels starting at level 0. Imprinting aspect from the codex into an item will have a chance to roll power from minimum power to x where x is calculated according the this formula

x = Min + ( Max - Min )*CodexLevel/100

In short imprinted aspects from:

  • Codex level 0 → will roll at minimum power
  • Codex level 100 → can roll at maximum power (but it is not guaranteed)

Once you level up your codex you can try to imprint aspect again and again to get a better roll but this will consume resources. Imprinting aspect from the codex will have a cost, it will require material item acquired by salvaging legendary items.

At Season Start all aspects registered in the codex will carry over to the new season but codex level will be reset to level 0. This my look like a big power boost at season start but I really can’t see anything bad with it. All it will do is accelerate the time it take to reach world tear 4 where the actual endgame start.

At Season End all new aspect registered during the season will carry over to the eternal realm but codex level will be transferred only if your season codex is higher than the codex in your eternal realm.

Reaching codex level 100 should be a long term goal but not impossible. It should be possible to at least reach Codex Level 60-80 within a season. Definitely it should take longer than leveling your character up to 100.

Quality of life, hovering over an extracted aspect in your inventory will compare it to your codex.

Possible future improvement/expansion of the codex system.

  • Cap the codex level at first, and increase the cap with each season by completing the season journey. Example at first you can level it only up to level 50 but after 5 season you can level it up to 100, 10 level each season.
  • Use Sacred and Ancestral Aspect to improve minimum roll
  • Increase Codex level beyond level 100. For example codex level 101 to 200 start increasing aspect min power bringing it closer to max but never reaching it so there is still some RNG you have to overcome

Thanks for reading to the end.

I like this very much. From end-to-end.
I actually came here to write somewhat similar post, specifically on some way to organize the aspects.

  2. Consume it and register it into the codex (this can be done only once for each aspect)

  • This will free up a lot of space in the stash, and pretty much solve the problem with organizing - currently 4/5 pages in my stash are aspects.
  • it is a nightmare to find the aspect I need, even though I try to keep them well arranged
  • point 2: use the extracted aspect to add it to the codex - OMG YES, I want that. It is fine that some aspects are drop-only, but then it should be possible to add them to the codex. (In addition, destroying an item to extract the aspect, should also add it to the wardrobe)
  • unlocking the occultist also have to be fixed - I did all dungeons and then I created new character… The occultist would not speak to me for a long time, even though I have the aspects and resources and all to imprint that build-defining aspect to my level 1 toon (or lvl 6 - lowest rare items are level 6, no?)
