Ok hear me out. Series S has a 40gb install, similar to PC without the ultra texture pack. So I assumed I’d be getting similar visuals.
However the moment I logged in for the first time on PC - I noticed various assets on screen look low res. For example the teleporter pad at the tree of whispers stuck out like a sore thumb.
Here’s what I think is happening. The Series S has textures balanced across the entire scene, so nothing sticks out like a sore thumb. Whereas PC seems to be doing what Last of Us, Resi 4 & some other modern PC games have done, which is rather than balance texture resolution across the entire scene. Instead you have a mixture of Ultra textures, with various low resolution assets scattered across the scene.
In other words - medium > high > ultra is simply removing more lower texture resolution assets from the scene. Rather than broadly increasing the resolution of the entire scene.
The complaint - this makes certain assets really stick out horribly. The Series S has only 10gb of shared ram for the entire system. But because the entire scene is balanced overall. It’s looking better at a glance than my PC at high settings. Despite the same 40gb install.
Please please, can you not do this?? The Last of Us also got grilled for it & it was eventually fixed, with lower resolution assets brought up to balance the scene overall. I don’t want to have download the whole 80gb install when I’m gaming at 1080p, just to have texture assets not look worse than my Series S.
Also, for anyone who works in game development - could you explain or take an educated guess at why Pc games are starting to do this (not balancing texture resolution across the entire scene for a balanced image, but instead taking the ultra texture settings and simply adding more and more low resolution assets to the scene.) it’s horrible!!
