Best counter to secret mage?

Hey all

I know there’s a lot of discussion recently about secret mage and Sn1p-Sn4p Lock being ridicously overpowered in wild. I haven’t actually faced many locks playing that deck and I reached rank 5 quite easy with a combination of sub par exodia mage, cthun druid and murloc paladin decks.

My major roadblock in getting any higher was secret mage and I’ve read that there is no real counter for it even if you tech in anti secret cards you’ll have a 50% win rate against it regardless.

Well I decided to try a new deck as I want to start working towards golden rogue and found the best deck is appearantly odd rogue although I’m not sure if I’m playing an older version as it’s running magic carpet and I haven’t seen an odd rogue play that against me, maybe I’m wrong though.

I’ve played 3 games so far and guess what 2/3 of those games was against secret mages (the other was murloc shaman which I won) and I won and lost one so currently 50% win rate bare in mind I’m still new to piloting the deck and rogue is one of my least played classes but both games were close and I might have won the lost game had I played Zilliax to recover health instead of other minions.

I guess I will find out the more I play the deck but is odd rogue favored against secret mage or countered? It’s the only deck I’ve played so far where I’ve felt on equal footing…also what deck would you consider the hardest counter to secret mage and what decks hard counter odd rogue?

Run eater of secrets, it’s battlecry triggers before the cards are able to trigger, same with SI:7 and Warden or whatever the Witchwood card is called. Don’t run all of them but eater is probably your best bet

I’m thinking of adding one in perhaps it can replace Dark Iron Skulker as I’m running 2 and so far I’ve not needed both of them. It seems worth it in this meta especially thinking of all the times I’ve had lethal only to lose because of ice block.

I think you either need a faster or a slower deck.

the faster approach is straight-forward: kill them before they can kill you.

the slower approach is: survive until secret mage runs out of steam. then win.

I play lots of jade druid and rarely have a problem against secret mage. (but I’m playing in lower ranks than you). I imagine stuff like control warrior to be equally withstanding.

the current VS meta report has only 2 bad matchups for secret mage and both are considered tier 1: mech paladin and reno mage.

Seems the best way is to outlast until they run out of steam. I’ve tried aggro and rush decks against it…but they can handle these decks most times with flame ward and Arcane flakmage.

i have been playing secret mage lately and the best counter is maybe ress priest or all mech decks

I play reno hack the system warrior. Didnt encounter too much secret mage between 19 and rank 8 last season (i played other decks as well but i tried it in nearly every rank) but i didnt loose a single game with that deck against secret mage.

If you can throw out 2 4/3 for about every turn and can heal yourself up to the max, they will run out of steam eventually

Also noone expects it :smiley:
