Building a deck

Hello dear Hearthstone players and Hearhpwn community!

Long post ahead sorry

Let me start off by saying i am kind of a returning player ( played a little bit at launch and a little bit at Rastakhan’s rumble), i mostly play the game F2P with the exception of the current deal on Hollow’s end and the starter pack.

I am here today to ask your help, see i have an issue i cannot synergize cards and build a deck even if my life depended on it. When given an already made deck i always can see the logic of it on my own and how it is ment to be played however when it comes to actually making the thing on my own… words have not been made to discribe how bad i am at, to the point where actually i gave up. Today i ask the annoying task to any gentle soul who would be up for it to take a look at my collection and go crazy, tell me what i can build with the cards i have go ham with all classes let me see what u can come up with ( i also have 1k dust ).

My collection:

update : twisting neather and eaglehorn added.

I won’t have time until the weekend to have a real look, but at a glace, some sort of highlander hunter should be solid, as you have enough cards to form an ok base (especially with added cards).

take your time my friend whenever u can take a look please do  thank you in advance

Highlander Hunter? Ok, but he’ll need to get Dinotamer Brann, maybe Zephrys too.

i have dinotamer brann but sadly not the perfect card genie :frowning:

here’s a very general and simplified blueprint of how to build a deck:

1. come up with a win condition. a win condition are those cards that will most likely get you the win. that’s your primary game plan.

in highlander hunter, those are the expensive cards like Siamat, Zul’Jin or Dinotamer Brann. When playing, you look for favorable (and early) situations in which you can play them and you go from there.

so when you try to build your own deck, think about what you want to build / which cards you’d like to use and then think about how they can win a game. those are your win condition cards, the core of your deck.

2. the rest of your deck are called tech cards. those help you get to your win condition. the most common categories of tech cards are:

  • card draw (for example acolyte of pain, arcane intellect, coldlight oracle).
card draw helps you get to your win condition by getting more cards from your deck into your hand, so you go through your deck faster
  • removal.
    there are two types:
. AOE (area of effect): example being flamestrike or blizzard. those are spells that don’t target specific minions, but all minions that stand in the targeted area (most often your opponent’s side of the board). this is very effective against a full board of low- to mid-health minions.
. point removal (there’s probably a different term for this as well): example being shadow word: death or naturalize. this targets a specific minion and kills it. this is good against high-health minions.
the function of removal is to help you survive. you can’t win the game when you’re dead, so surviving is pretty important. by removing your opponent’s threats, you not only survive more easily, but have an easier time developing your own board (which simply means putting stuff on your side of the board).
  • there are other, more specific kinds of tech cards, like cards that interfere with your opponents hand (example: dirty rat) or your opponent’s deck (skulking geist) or your opponent’s actions (secrets, like counterspell) and there are other types as well.

in highlander hunter your tech cards are for example
. point removal (deadly shot, kill command),
. interfering with your opponent’s actions (secrets),
. card producing cards (shimmerfly),
. card draw (sand binder, masked contender (he doesn’t draw, but cast, which is arguably better), subject 9),
. zephrys (he is a category by himself because he is so good and versatile).
. there’s other stuff, but I just wanted to give you a quick overview about the subject

that’s it in a nutshell. in reality it’s much more complex, but the concepts are rather simple. it comes down to practice and meta knowledge. you need to know what the meta looks like in order to select the right tech cards. this is sometimes specific to your particular area of the meta. if you meet a lot of decks with lots of small minions, you might need more AOE than someone at a different rank who mostly meets decks with few, big minions. oftentimes it is not that necessary to adapt if your deck is good, but this is sometimes a good way of increasing your winrate by a small margin.

again, this comes with experience. don’t stress yourself out over it. just build whatever looks fun and good, then try it out and if it doesn’t work, try to think about why it doesn’t work. then try to tweak this weakness spot and see if the replacement works better.

if you don’t know what to do you can always post here in the forum and the wizards will help you. just don’t try to rely too much on them. hearing the optimal solution and understanding why it works is much easier than coming up with a mediocre solution that kinda somehow works sometimes. but it is this struggle of finding a solution yourself that’s gonna teach you how to build decks in the end.

but asking is still important because it helps you stay on the right track.

find the right mix

Good job I actually skimmed through the cards and saw they had Brann, hence the suggestion :grimacing:

A lot of people are saying Singleton Hunter, but if you have a nice amount of the classic Warlock cards, play Dinomancer Warlock, it’s got a simple combo that is great fun to use.

i am up for building a deck for all classes. what do u suggest i can do with my collection of lock cards? i got a few legendaries and epics on this class.
Update: Ixnay did u get a change to take a deeper look?

Druid: Some type of token deck. It’ll be cheap and of an ok power level. https://hsreplay.net/decks/axWNNT6VEKTmyhd9IBCAm/

Hunter: You can build a budget midrange easily but a highlander version would be more fun. It is typically a very expensive deck, but whilst we have the free cards you can make something reasonable.

Replace Nozdormu with Brann. There’s 1 rare card to craft Khartut Defender, but it’s just a solid card to have and will stop you dying when you plan N’Zoth.

Warlock: Zoo as always is the budget answer

Nozdormu is your diseased Vulture, Dwing is Tekahn. You would really like Sea Giants in this, but I kept the list to cards you have plus commons.

Paladin: Who am I?

https://hsreplay.net/decks/WIahWF7CbHVdX9qndTREMf/

Change Leeroy for Rag.

Shaman: Murlocs

https://hsreplay.net/decks/IWVgKIK1aNKnwj00T4Az1c/

This would be pretty much all you budget though and there’s no real substitutes for the warleaders.

I think the other classes are a little out of you budget for now. Combo Priest for example is cheap but I wouldn’t bother without the 1 legendary + 2 epics the deck needs.

Good luck

thank you so much. your answer exceeded my expectations. i Ow you a great dead. One last thing i was wondering what is the legendary and two epics the deck needs ( priest). As for the warleaders i only have one copy but i guess i could maybe craft one. What do u think of evolve shaman? i dont seem far off it

Amet and Psychopomp. Then you’d still need the rest of the deck (which is cheap tbf)

Well you need all the murlocs as well so there’s several rares as well as the epic.

I can see evolve Shaman being a solid choice but the 2 thunderheads are a necessity so that’s 800 dust which doesn’t leave you much to fill out the deck.

I got 1 out of two is it that mecessary to have two?

Well it’s statistics the highest played wr murloc in the game by quite a way (2.4% which doesn’t sound a lot but the next 6 are seperated by 1.8% combined).

The thunderhead? Its a really solid card

I played murloc quite a bit earlier that year and that card won me a number of games. Especially against zoo and in the mirror.

Im usually a low rank player but i climbed 5 ranks with it

i was able to craft the hunter and lock decks however for the shaman and paly deck i seem to be over 10 cards short. Are you sure my collection fits those decks?

Well I literally said the shaman one would cost you everything.

The Paladin one was just an extremely cheap deck that’s doing well, so I didn’t match card for card.
