Core set and crafting, an overview

In this topic I try to summarize what is currently known about the new Core set and how this will affect crafting and disenchanting. I hope others can help me fill in the blanks. (And if a full overview is already available elsewhere, feel free to drop a link below).

Cards in the Core set come in three categories. Completely new cards (e.g. Fogsail Freebooter), unchanged versions of existing cards (e.g. Arcane Intellect), and modified versions of existing cards (e.g. Warsong Commander). I try to summarize what I know for each category.

New cards

  • Two (one for legendary) regular copies given to all players.
  • Two (one for legendary) golden copies given to players above a certain level.
  • All these copies will be removed from your collection if, next year, the card is no longer part of Core.
  • These cards will all be uncraftable, so you cannot craft nor disenchant them.

Unmodified existing cards

  • Two (one for legendary) regular copies given to all players
  • Two (one for legendary) golden copies given to players above a certain level
  • All these copies will be removed from your collection if, next year, the card is no longer part of Core.
  • If you have the cards now, then those copies will remain in your collection and not be affected. You will probably be able to craft and disenchant these extra copies. (But if you disenchant them and next year the card is out of Core, you’ll need to recraft a new copy to use it in Wild and/or Classic mode)

Modified existing cards

  • Two (one for legendary) regular copies given to all players
  • Two (one for legendary) golden copies given to players above a certain level
  • All these copies will be removed from your collection if, next year, the card is no longer part of Core.
  • If you have the cards now, then those copies will remain in your collection and not be affected. You will probably be able to craft and disenchant these extra copies. (But if you disenchant them and next year the card is out of Core, you’ll need to recraft a new copy to use it in Wild and/or Classic mode)
  • The change to the card will also affect the Legacy copy you can use in Wild decks.
  • I do not expect dust refunds or full-dust disenchanting since there are not really any changes that are unquestionable nerfs. Most changes are buffs, or shifts that take a little and give a little.

(EDIT: Answers from Talaniel and links provided by them included in the overview. Far less questions now)

I think this article answers some of your questions: https://playhearthstone.com/en-us/news/23620129/introducing-the-core-set-and-classic-format

The main point: take the Core Set as something entirely unrelated to the other sets and your collection (meaning: forget your Wild collection when thinking about the Core Set).

  • The Core set does not differentiate between the three types you identified.
  • The only requirement to get all the cards is to have all the heroes at level 10 or greater.
  • Golden Cards come from achievements - need to have wins with a class.
  • There is no need to own those cards in their original sets (crafted, unpacked, whatever) to get them in the Core Set.
  • The Core Set will be updated next year (and actually, I think it could be updated even during the year - instead of nerfing, card can be replaced) meaning you can lose access to some cards in Standard.
  • If you own a card in its “original” set then you will be able to use it where it is allowed to be played (Wild, Duels). It will not be removed from your collection after the Core Set is updated. It will just not be available in Standard.
  • No crafting/disenchanting of Core Set cards

Now some guesswork - maybe, this was already answered somewhere:

  • I think you will be able to see e.g. up to six copies of a card (Legacy set - Wild Mode, Legacy set - Classic Mode, Core Set), but you will be restricted to use only two copies in a deck (3/1 for Legendaries)
  • Actually, I think that modified cards will be modified in their respective original sets too, so it will be up to 4 copies: 2 from Core/Original set and 2 modified for Classic Mode

Edit: this is also interesting read: https://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/core-set-2021-guide-how-to-obtain-it-how-it-works-full-list-of-cards/ - quoting: “old expansion versions of all the cards changed for Core Set will also get the same changes”
