Deliberately prolonging the game: Is that okay?

Hi everyone!

I just played a Hearthstone game that nearly took one hour to finish.

The other player was deliberately letting the rope burn down all the way and then pushing the “End Turn” button at the very last second. They continued to do this until the very end of the game.

It wasn’t because they needed extra time to decide which cards to play. They would usually play the cards that they wanted at the very start of their turn, and then do nothing for the rest of the time. I also noticed that the player had a lot of cards to clear the whole board and gain extra armor so as to prolong the game even further.

I wonder if some people are using this as a tactic to frustrate other players into giving up and conceding, or perhaps it was some kind of bot?

Either way, I really don’t think this type of game-play should be accepted. I guess it could be considered cheating, or at the very least; griefing. They are using the mechanics of the game in unintended ways in order to waste their own and that of the other player’s time.

I don’t know if I’d be able to get anywhere in reporting this player or is it a lost cause?

Looks like a player who does not know that after 30 minutes, there is no additional XP gained  Or maybe just someone who tries to make the other player angry

My guess is that it was a bot, so hopefully it’ll get caught and the account deleted.

I am surprised that it doesn’t have an auto-concede function after 30 minutes, but if it’s roping every turn it’s not very sophisticated as that’s just asking to get caught.

BTW, the others didn’t mention this explicitly and I’m not sure if you’re aware, but roping every turn has become a thing since the rewards track was introduced.
Because, apparently, the amount of XP you get for a game is partially influenced by how long the game lasted. So Blizzard rewards roping.

There have been lots of complaints about this already and I would not be surprise to see this decision reversed shortly. Until then, there’s not a lot to be done about it.

I still haven’t had a single opponent do this to me.

Plus you’ve gota be pretty dumb to not realise that prolonging a game doesn’t increase your total XP as playing 3 games that last 30 minutes gets you the same as 1 that lasts 30, only you’re more than likely get more done playing 3 games than 1.

I do this all the time to max XP. screw you manz.

max XP by winning fast and often.

You don’t get additional XP anymore from winning
Just time spent playing

There is a bonus XP when you win. Measured by some players and myself too. https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/jw7zw4/xp_per_hour_calculations_win1xp7s_loss1xp10s/
Of course, we could have made a mistake, it would be better if Blizzard shared this info  It is also possible that Blizzard has changed it since the time the measurement was done.

Regardless of whether you get more XP by time spent in a game, I still don’t think that abusing the game’s mechanics to prolong the game should be allowed.

I’m not sure if anything can be done about it though, from what everyone’s been saying.

It’s just unfortunate that there are people out there who will go to any lengths to get what they want at other people’s expense. Really makes you lose faith in humanity.

I did end up winning the game in the end, so I guess there was a little bit of karma there…

:disappointed:

Was the opponent a warrior by any chance?
I posted a thread last week complaining about warriors sitting. I am hoping these players are banned soon.

You are lucky

So are you saying you purposely sit there and rope players?

If you’re playing Demon Hunter then yes its okay. I commend anyone who does this to bore the aggro players. I personally cant be arsed, but sometimes wish i could

Yes, it was a Warrior.

However, I also played against a Hunter yesterday, who was clearly some kind of bot. He let the rope burn down on every turn. He only used his hero power to attack me. He only had cards with taunt minions.

Where/How do I go about reporting these people?

You don’t.
They’re not technically breaking any rules. So what would you report them for?

So, what you’re saying is; using a bot (some kind of programme/script that plays the game for you) is not against the rules? :disappointed:

Of course bot play is reportable, but how do you know it’s not just real person being an a-hole?

If a player is particularly annoying spamming emotes the whole game, yes, i usually take my sweet time, on the leathal turn, to spam some back, before i poke his/her little face. Feelz good man. They probably are raging and crying about then.

The reason why I think they’re a bot is because:

  • They let the rope burn down all the way on every turn
  • They never attacked with their minions
  • Majority of their cards were taunt minions/cards to prolong the game
  • It looked as if they were constantly looking at their cards/minions/hero powers in an automated fashion (going from the left to right and then starting from the beginning again once they’d looked at everything)

I have video evidence of this and I’ve e-mailed it to hacks@blizzard.com but I’ve not gotten a response.

I wish I could show you this evidence because if you watch it, it’s glaringly obvious that it’s a bot, but I can’t because of the forum’s code of conduct (it shows the player’s name).

Cleng, I never spam people. I used to be the victim of that. Now, I always use the ‘squelch’ option at the start of every game.

I guess anonymity is what makes people feel safe to troll and cause other people misery? It’s like a playground for sociopaths.

I just wish that there could be some kind of punishment for people who deliberately play to troll and waste time. Give us the option to report players like this. Give us the option to report players that are obviously bots. Otherwise, I don’t know how much longer the real, genuine players will stay for.

Don’t think you get a response

Surely this is a free win, if they rope every turn you’ll have won by turn 5.
Wish I got bots!

They said that they played out taunts/removal and then wait for the rope.

You should still win, but you could easily get trapped for an hour depending what deck you’re playing. (Still not faced any yet)
