Glacial mysteries

Support please read this: Please remove this card, or at least cut its cost down to 5. Its the worst card in the game, and its a big bump in the road for mage regarding random card pulls.

I’m guessing your problem is not necessarily the cost of the card, but the fact that it’s useless if you get it from a random effect. Well… too bad, I’m afraid. 8 mana is actually cheap if you have 2 secrets.

Let’s assume the base cost for drawing a card with Mage is from Arcane Intellect. That’s 1.5 mana per card drawn. Each secret costs 3 mana to play. So, what’s the cost of Glacial Mysteries per number of secrets in deck?

  • 1 secret = 1.5 + 3 = 4.5
  • 2 secrets = 3 + 6 = 9
  • 3 secrets = 4.5 + 9 = 13.5
  • 4 secrets = 6 + 12 = 18
  • 5 secrets = 7.5 + 15 = 22.5

Although you basically spend a turn doing nothing (and that’s why no one plays this card) the spell is actually pretty cheap after 2 spells in the deck. That said, Glacial Mysteries cannot cost 5 just because you happen to find it in some unlucky random card generation.

keep in mind that bad cards are necessary in a card pool for random pulls if that pool also contains good cards. else you end up with an unbalanced card pool and while the actual result might be random, the value of the result won’t be.

example (exaggerated to make my point clearer): imagine a card Animal Tamer: 6 mana 2/3: summon a random beast with rush.

the card pool for this would be:

springpaw (1/1)
hunting mastiff (2/1)
hench-clan hogsteed (2/1 deathrattle)
vicious scalehide (1/3 lifesteal)
redband wasp (1/3 enrage)
vilebrood skitterer (1/3 poisonous)
akali, the rhino (5/5 overkill)
shirvallah (7/5 divine shield, lifesteal)
amani warbear (5/7 taunt)
oondasta (7/7 overkill)

this would be a pretty ‘meh’ card because it’d be very swingy. you could get a very good card or a pretty mediocre one. the card pool is relatively balanced (while leaning towards the mediocre side).

now imagine the first 7 cards would be rebranded as ‘critters’. since they aren’t beasts anymore, the card pool for Animal Tamer would be shirvallah, warbear and oondasta, making it an extremely good card because while you’d still get a random card, you’d be guaranteed a very good card (for the price) and thus the value of the random pull wouldn’t be random.

edit: thanks Philly

It’s a battlecry, not deathrattle. Doesn’t change much for the point you’re trying to make though.
