Gul'Dan's Nearest Death Experience

Gul’Dan felt like crap. He was beaten and bitter. His only relevant company were Jaraxxus and Godfrey, once lords, now mere drunkards. The rest of his party was… out of place. They didn’t belong there but then again, what does “belonging” even mean?

The shadows took the shape of a rogue: Mayev! An Argent Squire followed her closely. Equally odd combination if you ask me, a squire of the light following the footsteps of a thief. The squire attacked Gul’Dan while Mayev stabbed him in the face. The warlock bled while looking for an answer to the attack. He sent forward an Augmented Elekk, who, if we’re fair, was as confused as Gul’Dan himself as to why he was alone facing the two fierce women.

In the meantime Jaraxxus approached but the stupor of cold ale was stronger than his memories of the Burning Legion. Mayev sent forward a burglar of the Hench-Clan and killed the Elekk with such violence that one could imagine a Vendetta was unfolding. In despair Gul’Dan raised a Hellfire, killing the burglar and hurting himself and Mayev in the process. The squire survived using her divine shield but soon lost her life to a Mortal Coil.

Mayev was unimpressed. And she remained that way as Gul’Dan called an Ancient Watcher who just… stood there… doing… nothing. Mayev laughed so hard she didn’t noted the smirk on Gul’Dan’s face. The Watcher was just cannon fodder for the worst kind of lowlife: a Ratcatcher! Mayev was certainly not laughing now. Quite the opposite, she was taking the fight very seriously. She eviscerated the Ratcatcher with the help of an SI:7 Agent and threw everything she had to the now deeply wounded warlock who defended himself as well as he could. Tricks from druids and even warlocks were sent against Gul’Dan whose life was slowly but surely fading.

Godfrey decided to show up and in his usual style methodically killed everyone and received the same treatment from Mayev while Tess Greymane joined the fight. Another Elekk stepped forward to help Gul’Dan and with him, a Portal Overfiend who started creating portals for fiends to join the battle… the Elekk did the same. But Mayev, Tess and the newly arrived (even if quite feeble) Edwin VanCleef jumped on Gul’Dan leaving him for almost dead.

The fight took a toll on Mayev too. She was now almost alone and hurt. Around her portals opened and fiends started to slowly approach her while killing all her friends. Gul’Dan, holding on two threads of life, reminded himself of similar fights where, in the same position he is now, Reno saved him. Gul’Dan had other near death experiences in the past, but this was the nearest one yet and the present seemed to deny the possibility of a future.

As Gul’Dan waited for the final stab, a deep voice raised above the bloodied street. “Do you know who you are facing?” - asked the voice. Gul’Dan smiled as he dragged his wounded body out of harm’s reach. The voice continued: “YOU FACE JARAXXUS, EREDAR LORD OF THE BURNING LEGION!” was heard, followed by a distinct and sulfurous hiccup.

We will never know why Mayev attacked Gul’Dan’s party, but we know she preferred to disappear in the shadow than to face Jaraxxus. Live to fight another day, I guess. Gul’Dan, the Craplock, lived to fight again too.

Here you go, Phillybear.

This was the game for those interested:

Drunkards and confusion, sounds about right for a game of Craplock. Epic story: it gets Gul’Dans Final Seal of approval.

Also, if you put an enter before and after a replay link, you get something more fancy (if you have the right level)

Thanks, mate. I wanted to capture the “weirdness” of the deck and imagined Gul’Dan, Jaraxxus and Godfrey as “as-beens”, old glories. I guess that’s the trick for these stories: capturing the archetypes and tell a story around it.

This was fun!

Godfrey might return to the fore with the new Reborn mechanic…
