If there is a section called “Modes”, what “Play” and “Solo adventures” are?
here’s a diagram of the various game modes in hearthstone:
-> PLAY
. casual (constructed)
. ranked (constructed)
-> SOLO ADVENTURES
. training vs innkeeper
. adventures
. solo missions
-> MODES
. arena
. battlegrounds
constructed means that you build a deck from cards from your collection and use that.
ranked means that you play “ladder”. with a fresh account you start at rank 50 and every win gives you a star and for every X number of stars you gain a level (counting downwards). after rank 20 you also lose a star if you lose a game. if you have surpassed rank 1, you get into the legend rank with a different ranking system than stars (it’s called mmr).
casual means that you play without ranks. so there is nothing to display your progress. however, there is progress because there’s a hidden mmr (matchmaking rating) system. that basically means that you have a number assigned that increases if you win and decreases if you lose. so the better your results, the higher your mmr. this game mode pairs you with players of similar mmr, which hopefully results in matchups of equal-ish skills.
training vs innkeeper is just like constructed, but against he game’s AI. this is divided into normal and expert, but even expert it’s much easier than against human opponents.
adventures you can only access if you bought them while they were a thing. they are only slightly different from solo missions, so they work basically the same.
solo missions every expansion nowadays releases with a set of these that are free to play. you still play against the game’s AI, but against special opponents that have abilities, hero powers and such that are not available outside of this game mode. some missions are constructed (meaning you build your own deck), some give you a deck to play with.
arena is the limited format of Hearthstone. you chose your hero at the start and then get to chose a card from 3 different choices. you repeat that 29 times and end up with a 30 card deck that you play against human opponents. your current arena run ends if you either lose 3 times or win 12 times. then you get rewards according to the number of your wins. I think generally you need to win between 4-6 times to break even because this game mode has an entrance fee of 150 gold (or 2€).
battlegrounds is a new game mode that releases next week. it’s an autobattler like autochess. you build a board by buying and selling minions and then arranging them in an order that makes sense and then it automatically and randomly battles another person’s board. 8 players enter a game and you tend to always face a different opponent. the game ends when 7 players are defeated. however, a 4th place or better counts as a win and gives you rating points (like mmr). 5th and below decreases your rating.
Thanks for exhaustive description of game’s modes, but I still doesn’t understand why “play” and “solo adventures” are excludes from “modes”?
As I see “Battlegrounds” and “Arena” have only one thing in common -> You play cards that you don’t own, but this is true also for most of Adventures. So, I don’t understand logic of UI. Hearthstone client now is back in beta, so it’s good time to make interface consistent.
battlegrounds is a very new game mode. it’s only live (in a closed beta) for a couple of days.
before that, you’d only had an “arena” button where there’s now the “modes” button.
so the starting screen had 4 buttons:
- play (constructed)
- solo adventures
- tavern brawl
- arena
they had to fit battlegrounds somewhere and adding a 5th button (probably) wasn’t feasible because they gotta keep the mobile client in mind.
the next logical choice was to group it together with arena because it is neither constructed nor a solo mode and brawl is something different each week and thus doesn’t fit together with anything else.
edit: I just saw that you are not a new player (like I thought). I didn’t mean to sound patronizing here. Sorry if I did
They can change buttons to “play”, “collection”, “shop” and “options”. And in play you can choose from all of modes. It will be good not only for PC but in mobile devices too.
it’s unlikely that they will. especially since it would change the meaning of play (= constructed) that has been used for years.
so they’re kinda guaranteed that people would complain about this change.
they can’t satisfy everyone.
“Play” doesn’t mean “constructed”. Some of adventures are “constructed” too, so it isn’t consistent.
You have right that Blizzard most propably will change anything, because they just don’t work on UI at all. It has now 5 years, and on high-end devices it’s slow, clunky, and full of bugs. If there was no comparison or competition with other card game’s developers I would understand why they have no motivation to change anything. But now, when all statistics show that Hearthstone is in crisis, it’s perfect time, to adapt this game to modern standards.
adventures are AI games though. I’ve never seen the term “constructed” used in the sense that it includes AI games (PvE). from that perspective it is consistent.
where can I find those?
So when I play with AI with my decks,. I don’t play?
You can find statistics at google trends or twitch. You can ask Hearthstone content creator’s how are they in comparison with two - three years ago
I think the only really logical explanation is that there was no room for a fifth button, and Blizzard did not want to do a complete overhaul of the UI. So they had to combine two game modes under a single button.
I don’t read anything more into it than just that.
When i ask a content creator on how they do now its not a statistic
If you ask 10 000 creators multiple times over a condistent period of time than it would be the closest thing.
And that wouldnt even account for their perdonal choices and their personal changes etv.
Hell even if you were more kids friendly and they grew out of it it would change your viewership
So id like those statistiks as well.
Pls provide a link which is official
you won’t get them. his statement was that all statistics show that HS is in crisis and he cited twitch and google trends (which tells you how often a term was searched for).
it’s kinda obvious that back in 2014 more people searched for “hearthstone” than in 2019, when everyone has heard of it.
and twitch. It wouldn’t surprise me if viewership was higher at some point, but pretty much every time I look into the directory, HS is among the top 10 games.
I haven’t seen anything indicating a crisis.
Well i tried to taunt him or dare him to give me a link which i was quite certain he couldnt provide.
Just wanted to see the response
