I have never been silenced in-game. I have played since alpha. I have had a break though. But still
Older accounts take more reports to get sanctioned. Also, depends how many games you play within X time period. Reports decay with time not on games played. So if you play a lot of games within a short time frame there is a higher chance to get sanctioned due to higher rate of report accumulation.
Also, ranked game mode seems to punish more easily than other modes from my experience. Try to play ranked for 3 days straight (10 hours a day or so). 100% you get sanctioned.

By the way “a while ago” was more than 2 years
In the interest of truth and in this particular case I was suspended for answering to “FU” with an “FU” of my own.
But I have been suspended for saying “Jesus christ what the Fxxx are you doing” in a context where the player I was talking to had been warned by team many teams to not head in alone and die.
