A way to improve the payload/hybrid gamemode

I’m pretty sure you all know that people in payload game modes prefer to push beyond to find and kill some people. Why ? Because it’s fun, it’s way more fun to fight people in an FPS than push a sluggish payload.

Because of that, I’ve always thought that maybe the payload needed to go a bit faster ?
But after thinking about my games on the New York map, I’ve had some kind of revelation.

It’s not about the payload’s speed, it’s about the defense spawn.

With the OW2 beta, I’ve been playing the game every day with friends who have left the game years before because it wasn’t fun anymore, but I remember that when playing King’s Row in defense, everyone complained about the respawn being way too far and now it makes sense to me, I feel like it’s connected somehow to people in attack wanting to push and leave the payload behind.

New York is so well designed because when you start the payload, the defense team will spawn right at the entrance of the train station, unlike Dorado and King’s Row where you’ll spawn at the end of the map, and you’ll have to go for such a long walk it’s just boring.

Now that I think about it, Eichenwalde is also a great map and the defense respawn doesn’t feel like a chore like King’s Row and Dorado because you don’t respawn at the end of the map when the attackers get the first point.

So in my opinion, despite Dorado and King’s Row being good maps, they would benefit a lot from having a closer spawn for defenders.

Now obviously, I’m not a map designer nor game designer, I do think it would need some adjustements so the defense wouldn’t be TOO easy, but they did it with Eichenwalde and I think it would be pretty good on King’s Row. I don’t think it would be so bad having them spawning in the end of that long line, might make some pretty good fights before the checkpoint.

But again, I’m not a map designer or anything, the idea is just to not make defenders spawn at the end of the map when the payload is captured, it pushes attackers to go out of their way to kill people because pushing the payload is boring, and walking from the end of the map to the payload feels like a chore as a defender. I don’t think it would be too hard to add just a little lobby to have people to spawn in. For example, I think in Numbani having people spawn just a little bit further would incentivize people defending the first payload checkpoint a bit more, I feel like this one is most of the time forgotten because it’s easier to defend after it. Might be fun to have them spawn in the highground, but maybe too OP ? Idk, just an idea like that, but the general suggestion is still the same : don’t make defenders spawn in the end of the map right away. Have as many spawn points as there are checkpoints.
