Another story about competitive

Hello,

I’m 30 y/o guy, playing mostly support and some of tanks, but I can play and some of DPS heroes. I went from 2.6K to nearly Diamond (2975 season high) and in last two weeks I get back to 2.6K even I play almost the same and adapt to my team with picks which bring me nearly to Diamond this season.
And I’m writing this because I see something that is ruining whole game and it’s mostly competitive games in OW. Someone would tell me “just play other modes and quickplay”, but no, I want to play competitive also because it’s challenging.
But todays challenges are different. Todays challenge is not like, get into diamond or something. Todays challenge is to get a team.

Overwatch is and should be team-based game. Period. But in someones heads there is very different approach to the game. I’ve got a feeling that this is becoming a game, where some people learn one or two heroes, trying to get as much as possible gold medals which will give them right to get salty on others and tell them that they are reason we lost a game. And most of that players are those who pick Widow or Hanzo. I don’t mind that someone pick those heroes or any other heroes TBH, but most of the pick are solo based and not team based. And most of them won’t switch even if we are overruned by enemy team. They knew that they are good at some heroes, they won last game with them and still forcing some picks as mandatory for them.
That’s why so many games are Widow/Genji/Hanzo instapicks, no matter what other players in their or in enemy team pick. Yesterday, friend and I had game where he picked Hammond for destorying choke points and our Widow started to spam in hero pick menu that we should pick Rein and Zarya, and when we spawned Widow came to my friend and start going left-right with their rifle to tell him not to pick Hammond. Most of the time, out Widow died from Winston (which is counter for her) and other Widow which was a slightly better with positioning. We lost that game and many other where some players who are one-tricks, choose to die while spamming I need healing hiding from his healers who could send orb or Brigitte heal to them.

Next game on Lijang, we got in 4-stack and all 4 of them pick only DPS heroes. So, our picks are limited because it’s hard to play with only one hero and only one tank. And suddenly, my thoughts and prayers worked and one of them picked Lucio and somehow we had enough of heals and damage to sustain their attacks and give them enough damage to stay away from point. We won that game, it was very hard but it was hard because of our picks.

I don’t mind lose a game. It part of playing online and I can’t win them all. but I do mind that my team don’t know how to pick some heroes or don’t want to pick what team needs at the moment. Every map is different story and they need different approach, different style of playing, different team composition, but some people are not team players, at all. That is a problem. I played this game for fun and I’m trying to have some fun, but that fun is ruined by other players who are unable to learn to play other heroes, be flexible with picks and still they could have they main heroes that they can play when game is hard. And I don’t wanna get to Master or GM, but Diamond for me is also good thing for me, and I was in Diamond on PS4 and PC, I know I can get there again and again, but with team who can adapt, who can switch when we are overruned, who can fight and not leave when the round is lost. With those kind of players, anyone could achieve higher ranks because it’s a team game, you win like a team and lose like a team, but I will gladly lose a game with good team composition while we fought hard than lost a game just because we have holy trinity in our team (Widow, Genji, Hanzo) that won’t switch or adapt to picks of other players and enemy team.

People just need to learn adapt to their team. Some of them can really play well and learn how to counter their hard-counters, but those are rare people that finished on higher ranks. But most of us are just regular players, some with more skills and some with less and getting in higher ranks is matter of adapting to your team and play the best as you can to achieve victory. Now is hard to achieve victory without proper looking team. People need to get over their ego and approach to this game as team-based game, not an individual game where one guy trying to kill 6 enemys and getting all gold medals for them self.
