Mercy mains are prominently females, and those men who play her get bullied as if they were a girl. Told to go to a kitchen kind of immature jokes, demeaned for playing Mercy because it’s a girls character.
Feels bad man. No wonder many girls don’t reveal themselves in mics. If it doesn’t cause immediate harassment in the match, then it comes in the forums. Seen too much of this scheisse.

No, they’re targeted because the insecure attackers need to pick a victim who can’t outdo them. Mercy doesn’t get many kills (usually), so obviously she can’t take the gold medal on that account. And since the devs nerfed her into the ground she can’t outheal.
I wouldn’t read into these people’s motivations too much, they’re not exactly rational.
No, it’s actually the opposite: Women are getting targeted because they’re mercy mains.
This sounds rather sexist but there is a simple explanation for that: Mercy is one of those heroes who requires little to no mechanical skill. This makes Mercy a “Noob hero” which only terrible players main. This is why Mercy mains have the reputation of “S4cking at the game”. This leads to the Bully syndrom, where a player is aiming to hurt a Mercy main as much as possible.
Basically, they look for every aspect of your personality that hurt you. Things like being fat, playing Mercy only, supporting any politician, being a specific gender or s3x, having a specific religion or ethnicity, etc. As long it can hurt you, they use it as a weapon.
Mercy mains being insulted for being women is a result of preconceptions and prejudice of both the bully and the bullied. Yeah, I’m basically saying that it’s the woman’s fault, too, because they let the insult be an insult. If they let those insults fly over the shoulder, less and less bullies tend to use their gender as a weapon and, sooner or later, the preconception and prejudice of female Mercy mains fall apart.
Nevertheless, an Insult is an Insult. If someone is harassing anyome, no matter wether they do it due to their race, gender, relicion, etc., you should take action call them out. They are breaking the CoC and thus should get the punishment they deserve. Report and move on.

People will get targeted for anything, including being a woman or for being a Mercy main. That’s how bullying works. Bullies pick upon ANY aspect of a person that they can and then focus in on that. All that matters to a bully is that you can use something, -anything- as a tool to hurt the other person, then you use that thing as much as you can.
A bully is usually pretty dumb, uncreative lacks empathy, ect. If he wants to hurt you, then he needs something to go off of. If he hears a female voice, then that’s something he can latch onto. It’s the same with accents. If someone is Russian, then the bullying can go to focusing on vodka or bears, and if the person is French the bullying can involve baguettes. If it’s British, you can use bad teeth/breath.
This also goes back to Tribalism which is the instinct to gather together with people who you feel are the same as you in a tribe and then consider everyone else who is even slightly different as an enemy. This is a comforting thing to do for people. In the OW community the majority of people are men and not Mercy mains. So, naturally the majority of people who are inclined to bully, will want to consider a female to be an enemy, and the same with them being a Mercy main.
It’s difficult for a white, american male to attack another white, american male, because then they’re basically insulting themselves. So, they’d need to find something else that sets them apart, maybe different political interests or something??

This is very badly worded, but I get what you’re kind of trying to say? Maybe you’d want to clarify, but regardless, it is never the victims fault for being bullied. I know how to brush aside this sort of c**p, but it is not the fault of a victim for being hurt by bullying. The fault is entirely with the bully. Learning to deal with the bullying is certainly a good thing for victims to learn, but saying that it’s their “fault” for being hurt? Naaaaah…
Well, I don’t know how to say this properly. When a bully bullies you, a conversation has basically started. Both parties have an impact on the dircetion of that conversation so both of them have the chance to redirect the discussion to their advantage. In a Bully case, the conversation is one sided. The Bullied can hardly change the conversation with verbal force. However, their only opportunity to control the discussion is to react to the information. That’s the point where I mean that it’s the woman’s “fault”, they react to that insult having an impact. If they don’t react to the sexist insult (or at least not react defensively), that insult loses meaning and the bully understands that they can’t use your gender as a weapon against you.
This has less to do with the victim dealing with bullying in general but rather with the victim controlling the impact of insults. For example, I was bullied for being overweight and having an afro-like hair. They almost drove me to suicide but, one day, my parents taught me an important lesson:
Take it easy. Ignore the insults and those insults lose meaning.
Once they noticed that I don’t care that they call me fat of a mushroom head, they looked for other weaknesses to hurt me like my agressive behaviour when having an emotional breakdown. But I didn’t care either and they had no idea anymore on how to hurt me verbally. Meanwhile, I abused every situation to hurt them as much as possible by appealing for legal actions. In the end, all those bullies did was hurting themselves.
That’s what I’m trying to say. Don’t give sexist insults any meaning and punish them for their own stupidity. When someone calls me a f4gg0t, I laugh it off, show how little I care and report him for being stupid and thinking that a funny word hurts me. When someone calls you anything insulting, just brush it off and give them what they deserve.
I haven’t experienced mercy bulling in my games but whatever… One of the people I play with on a regular basis on another account is a forty-something year old male with close to 1000 hours of mercy. He has never been insulted in any of our games despite voice chatting all the time (both in LFG lobbies and during gameplay). The only thing he gets from other players regarding mercy on a regular basis is “X hours of mercy???” but I wouldn’t treat that as an insult.
OP might attract these bullying guys for some other reasons specific to him. This thread might also be the result of kicking up the fuss about something that happened only a few times. Seems to happen regularly on this forum.
I suppose I’m a Mercy main, she’s the one I’ve got most hours on. I can’t say that in the two or so years I’ve been playing I’ve ever been given a hard time for playing her. At least not directly.
People on forums and occasionally youtube complain about Mercy mains, in game I mostly get people asking me to Mercy cause they see my profile and I guess they don’t want me to play anything else… (maybe I should reprivate my profile).
I haven’t seen people target Mercies for being women though, even indirectly. This whole ‘‘gamers hate women’’ meme is utter gunk. Gamers hate bad players who don’t admit that they’re bad players. A hot woman has an easier time of getting someone to boost them and getting stream views, so they become more noticeable than the hoards of men who aren’t good and blame everyone but themselves for their losses. And Mercy happens to be a go to pick for anybody who’s looking to get boosted, since she’s kinda easier to carry.
