Banned because of disconnection errors

Because Overwatch keeps disconnecting, it kicks me out of seasonal games and I am now banned for this season. I tried restarting my WIFI router and disconnected and then reconnected my switch to the WIFI before, but nothing seemed to work. Therefore I think it’s an in-game issue. I’m upset that I got banned because of something I can’t control. Could you please fix this bug for me and undo my ban? And why does Overwatch also ban you for disconnection errors instead of only intentional early leaves?

Sadly, they’ll never overturn a ban.

Hopefully you’ll be able to sort your issues and enjoy the game soon!

You’re asking in the wrong place for this (You should be asking Customer Service), but @RodimusPrime is correct, they are incredibly unlikely to overturn a ban. If you were banned because your connection is so unstable that you keep disconnecting, then the ban SHOULD stay in place in my opinion, as you are knowingly making the game worse for everybody else in your games. If you’ve disconnected enough to get a ban, then it’s not an every now and again thing, it’s very frequent, and you really should sort it out before trying to play online. Some games are more relaxed on micro disconnects and dropped packets, but Overwatch, and Blizz PVP games in general, are quite tight on the amount of dropped packets it will accept before considering you disconnected. Unfortunately, the Switch doesn’t have the option for an ethernet cable that I’m aware of (Maybe a USB to Ethernet adaptor, but I doubt it) so unfortunately, you’re probably stuck trying to diagnose the issue with the WiFi.

Does it happen both in the dock and handheld?

Is the router in the same room as the Switch or across the house? Are you in a heavily populated area and possibly getting interference? Is your router the bottom of the barrel garbage your ISP provided? Are there a lot of power cables around the Switch dock?

The Overwatch servers are historically pretty stable, so it’s highly unlikely that it’s a game or server issue. There have, however been times when the routing through AWS etc has been borked, but the only way to find that out is to actually contact Customer Service, not posting in the forums.

There’s no way for the server to tell whether the disconnection was due to an error, or deliberate. If they only banned for clicking the leave button or Alt+F4ing, then people would get around it by unplugging their network cable.

Server errors can be understood. they are not mystical entities. I have been watching people get, quite obviously, dumped by the server at lot over the last week. I Put it down to VM doing a major upgrade to its network but the disconnects continue now that is finished. I myself have been dropped from three matches. I have returned to this game, after a long absence and the servers used to be 100% reliable. Not so in the last week.
