Best character from each category

I am a healer main, but I like winston and orisa as well, i’ve looked up before who has been voted the best healer/tank/dps, but there weren’t many results. What are people’s opinions? (Especially if you main someone and you think they deserve top spot)

Main whatever you feel comfortable with, things may change in a heart beat. Tracer could go from the best DPS to the trash bin without even nerfing her for example.

That said Reinhardt and D.Va seem to always be good so go with them as tanks.

There is no such thing as “the best healer”. Each hero shines in different situations. Of course there are heroes that are considered op or broken but that is only for a temporary basis until patches balance said heroes.

You simply can’t make a tier list like in fighting games because the efficiency of a hero is highly situational, depending on maps, team composition, enemy composition and your own skill level.

a) Stuff changes every now and then.
b) Context matters, whoever is the strongest depends on your team synergy.
c) Rank matters. Just because there is a meta for the pros doesn’t mean it’s any viable for the actual player base.
d) Either way you should be able to play at least 2 of the heroes in your role and be able to flex into one additional role, otherwise you might find yourself in a cul-de-sac rather quickly.

If you want a rough draft:
main tank: Rein > Winston > Orisa (Orisa might benefit from the newest patch though, hard to evaluate how it’s going to change)
off tank: D.Va > Zarya > Hammond > Hog (D.Va suffered the most from the newest patch, so she might drop; and Zarya gets played a lot, because she synergizes well with Rein)
main healer: Ana > Moira > Mercy (Ana is very hard to play though)
off healer: Lucio > Zen > Brig (Lucio is valuable with Rein, because he mitigates Rein’s biggest weakness)
DPS: too situational to properly rank… high tier would be Ashe, Hanzo, McCree, Reaper in mid you got Genji, Junk, Mei, Pharah, Tracer, Widow, and in bottom Bastion, Doomfist, Soldier, Sombra, Symm, Torb.

Another approach to evaluate them is to look at the pure synergies. It generally centers around the main tank:
Rein + Zarya + Lucio + Moira + Hanzo + Reaper -> sticking together, Zarya and Hanzo can combine ults powerfully
Winston + D.Va + Zen + Mercy + Widow + Tracer/Genji -> focused on singling out enemies to pick them off one by one via superior mobility
Orisa + Hog + Mercy + Ana + Bastion + idk -> if you can bunker, protect your bastion and let him rip everything apart
Rein + Zarya + D.Va + Lucio + Brig + Zen -> “GOATS” comp, playing very well organized as a single unit
In other words: you can make almost every hero work, if the rest of the team fits into it.

PS: Can’t wait for everyone to nitpick singled out aspects of the dozens of judgements I made in this post.^^

Personally.

Lucio
Hammond
Ashe

Just don’t get caught up in the blizzard categories, they are vague at best, Hammond a tank? More of an initiator and disrupter.

It’s situational but I find those 3 are goods for me in most situations, even though Hammond can be more of a liability, feeding the enemy ultimate and easy to shunt down with cc.

thanks so much for the advice! I already got that heroes are all situational, but also the general current meta is good to understand.

At the current meta, at high ranks but not too high:

Lucio, ana

Mcree (the rest of the dps are just too weak to pick instead of a zarya or brig)

Zaria, Dva

It just takes someone to know why something is meta to abuse it in every rank up to GM.
I can agree that just picking meta comps won’t get you anywhere but watching one “Analysis video” does wonders for that. And with meta pick’s, nearly everyone on the team needs to know why its meta and how it plays out.

Even if a group of silvers all know exactly how dive, goats or any other meta works, they probably wouldn’t be able to make it work. Most pro comps only get good because of good communication and coordination, goats even more than dive (with dive you basically need the tanks to lead the way and the healers to read what the tanks are doing, with goats the target focus is crucial and ults are so highly synergetic that they have to be planned accordingly), which is something you won’t get in silver and most of the times not even anywhere else in solo-queue. This is why there never really was a goats meta on the ladder, and why the people trying it were always rather easily defeated. I climbed around 800 SR with a 70% win rate during the high time of goats and never once did my teams play them. Not in silver, not in gold, not in plat.

Then there’s also the simple fact that most people below plat can’t properly play Winston (see: dive) and most people below gold can’t play Brig or Zarya. I mean, sure, they can do something with them, but they generally don’t get the value out of them.

Thou the coordination requirements gets lowers as the rank it self does, since the other team won’t be playing on master and GM level’s them self so it kinda evens itself out.
Its just that low ranks don’t care for meta’s and such, they just want to have fun on the heroes they pick’d to play. And i find that perfectly normal since most heroes are dead at high rank.
