On the surface, competitive arcade modes are a great idea and a really easy way to bring variety into the game. In essence though the system for the ranking has to be adjusted to reflect the specific limitations of the mode. By that I mean the fact that those modes only happen once a year.
You see, I get the regular SR - there is no time at all between seasons and because players don’t change that quickly, it’s reasonable to have everyone stay at their SR, because they will climb automatically.
This is how it goes in arcade comp for me (in CTF as well as 6v6):
A year ago I was low silver. So I placed there in CTF, 6v6 and probably something else as well (FFA DM was a bit later, I placed high gold in there). Now I’m generally somewhere between 2300 and 2500 whenever (and depending on how much) I play in regular CP. Yet I still have to do my 6v6 placements amongst bronze players, utterly destroying as much as a single person can destroy in a 6v6. Yeah, I lost a few of the placements, mostly the ones with the 1-0-5 comps. I even went 4-1 in games where we had leavers.
I said it during comp CTF and I say it again: it’s unfair to everyone involved. Sure, I could climb out over the span of 40-50 games if I keep up my 70% win rate, but it just doesn’t sound appealing.
How can this be fixed? Well, make placement matches actually be placement matches. This should go just as well for regular CP btw, but with the rare modes it’s really required, otherwise there can only be unfair matches.
PS: When will we finally get comp MH?
