Competitive results due to leavers

I had to come to the forums since in Blizzard’s “Contact Us” tab you cannot really write a message to blizzard.

Hi, so I’m sure you guys have seen this kind of thread several times but i just want to tell you my stand on it, even though im not sure how much my opinion matters in this case.

I’m talking about competitive and the leavers.

I really doubt that whenever someone plays a game of competitive they expect to see a leaver in their team, which, yes it does happen, no matter what the cause is, its inexcusable unless it’s something urgent or unexpected. But, why do the teammates of the person who left have to suffer? By that i mean when someone leaves, and the team loses, they get punished for it by getting a loss on their split, which can make or break a rankup/demotion. I’m sure 95% of the community who play competitive have faced the issue of someone leaving and that tilting the match in one direction or another. Most of the time it makes the game significantly harder to win, I’m sure the Overwatch team at Blizzard is aware of that.

My own experience with leavers and the loses.

Let’s take a game i played around 5 minutes ago. We queue up, we get into the match, Busan, already a terrible map, but whatever, It’s alright. The gates open and the game begins.A couple of us dies, that’s alright, we lost the first fight. Our Support leaves as soon as enemy point counter reaches 13%. It seems like a technical problem, considering that zenyatta (Nars) Left the game whilst switching aim to a teammate to heal. We continue to lose several teamfights due to poor positioning and lack of healing, The poor positioning as terrible as it is, with a second healer might’ve kept us alive and perhaps we would’ve won the fight. After a while we lose that point completely, let’s fast forward to next point and… same thing happens, except this time, positioning wasn’t as terrible, but we lost teamfights due to enemy reinhardt getting perma-healed and us not having enough heals. A lifeweaver, mercy etc. cannot heal the whole team on their own, like really there’s no way, at least not in this elo(Gold kekw). We lose the game, most people say ggs and all of us go along with our days like nothing happened. We had a perfectly fine chance to win the game if we just had a 2nd support. And that counted as a loss in the split.

TL;DR Why do leaver games count as losses? It’s seriously unfair.

Imagine you and 4 friends playing Comp together. It’s a hopeless game and you get stomped by the enemy. What do you decide to do? One of your teammates decides to leave the game in order to prevent a loss for the others. Eventually you would all be taking turns leaving losing games, shielding you effectively from deranking. I hope you get my point and understand that this scenario would be way more unfair.

Think outside the box. Think clever. Blizzard used to be good at delivering good games, and good game design.

What they could of done is set a null result for all players - if the leaver was grouped, then force the loss on his group, the leaver would get the usual penalty.

I hope you get my point, and ReaperGuy’s point that the current model is terrible, and penalises genuine players, and that my solution would make the game a lot more fairer.

Back in the Overwatch 1 days (the good game), I used to come up against leavers on my team countless times, and I reported it countless times, to no avail. I had to win way more than I had to keep my SR - that being the better ranking system again.

Even now it does happen on some nights where 2/3 games out of my 5 win period I can suffer a leaver on my team. Nothing yet has been done, but I hope one day Blizzard will see that it’s an issue on their game.

It’s a shame they’ve gone down hill so much.

yeah but that’s not really blizzards fault that people decide to leave,
but i am in firm belief in punishing leavers.

it’s simply a walkover, but because you’re playing with a team that you don’t know that makes it hard to rule how things should go, normally the team does get punished, but in the event of that the team tend to punish the one who did require the walkover.

so the leaver gets double lossed because first of all they forfeited the match and the second for abandoning their team, now the question is if the team should pay for it and get a loss aswell because it was a decision out of their control.

you can’t have a match where one team has not the required amount of members on it, typically a match like that gets automatic walkover, so realistically if a teammate leaves the game should just end.
the whole continue to play despite the leaver is playground rules.

Even in games with 10 solo players, this would result in a toxic and hostile environment where players try to get one another to quit the game in order to dodge the loss.

Every outcome you’ll get toxic players abusing it. There’s no stopping it

There’s a report system of which Blizzard were claiming they’re upgrading going into Overwatch 2. They apparently record logs and voice chat. You have all the data you need to stamp this out by punishing those being toxic for instance but muting them, or banning them - that will certainly put a stop to it going forward for the genuine players.

Saying that my idea is pointless because it will result in a toxic/hostile environment is a very odd reason to avoid coming up with a better solution to leavers for everyone else.

Instead you should look towards Blizzard’s (obviously failed) attempt at stamping out toxicity/hostility in the game if that is your reasoning and work on developing that further along side this improvement on leavers. Now PVE is out of the question although that was the whole point in ending OW1 (a great game) to this, there should be plenty of resource to develop such solutions.

Depends, they can force mute players, or just ban them as they would do for hacking. Though an initial temp mute would be sufficient I guess followed by a warning of what could happen if they do it again…

BTW Pachi, when I say ‘you’, I mean Blizzard ofcourse… I don’t really know your relationship with them other than you have ‘MVP’ under your name. But still, I just hope after all these years, that Blizzard will finally review this.

The report system is fully automated so don’t expect anything substantial from it. For the punishments to be applied it needs a somewhat high number of reports in a relative short time span. Someone did an experiment on a custom server, he mass reported himself (10-12 reports with other alts) and he got banned in 1 day.

happens the most in plat and diamond due to the ego and rage of every player there  I had 1-2 leavers per weak.

Blizzard were marketing the fact that they were enhancing this system (they did give it some sort of name…), they have all the data they need should they want to stamp out such hositility/toxicity which for some reason, is a reason to avoid dealing with the issue of leavers in a positive way for all players.

This is still continuing to be an issue, even more so in Season 6.

Tonight, it has happened all too frequently again.

Same with me yesterday. Leavers throwing a hissy fit at the end.

This is still continuing to be an issue, again today, more leavers.

What the hell is going on with Blizzard Battle.Net if leavers are happening this often. On top of that, just had a thrower who told the team he’s going to go AFK if something he said wasn’t do - he went AFK throughout the rest of the match although we were winning.

Unsure how they expect people to rank up if we’re held back by leavers.

Just for reference, I played CS competitive for over 5 hours straight the other weekend. Not once did I, or either team, get a leaver.

We had someone who had to restart for some reason, and the lobby went into a 2 minute pause until he rejoined, and it continued.

Something that a real AAA game does.

I’m going to tell you the same thing people tell me when complaining about leavers since i only play qp.

Its only competative. Competitive does not matter because i do not play it. Let people abandon the match how they see fit. Who care about your time being wasted, its only competitive.

But yeah leavers and afkers are a pain in the rear end no matter what mode

Who cares about my time being wasted? The developers, Blizzard. They should care about their game, the match quality.

It’s cute that you go off what people tell you. You carry on not caring, it’s fine.
