I am not sure if I’m supposed to put this here or under a different category, it’s my first time in the forums. I’ve been getting more and more toxic players harassing me in my competitive matches and reporting me for “throwing” because I’m a Symmetra main. From calling me homophobic slurs in team chat to harassment in all chat.
I recently got this one match where everyone reported me because I was apparently “throwing”. I tried my best to ignore them in the first round but in the second round most of my teammates gave up and started blaming everything on me and telling the enemy team to report me. While I was still trying to play the game even knowingly we’d lose because most of them gave up and just typing away in chat.
So, is maining Symmetra a reportable offense that can get somebody banned off the game? I switch to healer when I know I’m not doing anything as Symmetra but most people don’t like when it when I play Symmetra which ends up in them reporting me. I try my best to report people that harass me in-game but it ends up with me being punished because a lot of people have reported me under “gameplay sabotage” for playing my main.
I mean I know playing Symmetra most of the time isn’t as helpful but I try my best to win all my games and when one game doesn’t go well I get all the blame from my teammates.
I feel for ya, that sucks man. I had a game in QP a while ago as Mercy (before her re-work) where our Roadhog told me right off the bat that if he didn’t get rezzed every time he died, he would report me. I just took it for banter and was joking along with him, but nope, he was just a dick. He was a good player, but he found out I had a low rank (I was silver at the time) and then I could do nothing right by him. Some others followed his lead and piled on - I spent the whole game actually playing real well (I mean, not GM-well, obviously, but you tend to know if you’re having a good game or not) while these angry jerks gave me constant sh*t. We won pretty handily, but I got the only post-match card on our team with 7 rezzes and 20k+ healing (pretty decent for that level, I think?) which, of course, was a “total carry”. (For the record, I missed one Roadhod rez out of about 5… dunno if he actually reported me for it, but it was the most bewilderingly toxic match I have ever played.)
Anyway, that doesn’t answer anything! I’m pretty certain a pick on its own is not enough for a ban! The characters are there to be played, after all. Maybe a counter-report detailing the situation? There’s a Harrassment option or something, right? I’m not sure of the best approach, sorry… I ended up saving my Mercy game as evidence just in case.
I assume you’re a decent Sym? But if you’re team has fewer than 2 healers she’s probably not the way to go if you want to avoid headaches, especially in comp. (But there’s something to be said for forgetting the meta and playing to your strengths - it all depends on how you think you can add the best value I guess!)
Do you feel you were contributing as Sym?
If you were, more than you would by switching hero, you’re fine.
If you weren’t accomplishing anything, got countered, and refused to switch, you earned the toxicity.
When I know for sure that I am not doing anything I would switch to Mercy or Moira or maybe even DVa but they’d still blame it on me. Like for example, if we lose the match. They’d blame my Symmetra pick even though I wouldn’t even touch the hero the next round at all. There’s this game I recently had where this guy kept asking me to switch off Symmetra even though I was the reason we win the team fights because I’m always in their backline getting their Ana and Mercy. We ended up winning the game and I ended up getting a POTG, I obviously didn’t switch off because I knew that if I switch off I wouldn’t be able to do anything.
I have the feeling that some players start crying as soon as they see a non meta hero, such like Torb and Symm. If something goes wrong - it has to be one of them.
Maybe the people know that they are doing bad, but flaming others is always easier then saying that themselves were/are not doing good.
I also like to play Symmetra, right now only in Quickplay, but even there I get a lot of flame and I mean - it’s quickplay - nobody should take it that serious.
As long as you switch when you notice that you are doing nothing, then everything should be fine. I feel sorry for all the harassment you get and also some reports I guess… (?)
I wish you good luck in your next games, and that you get better mates, some that respect a Symm ^^
(As it seems she will be op after her changes, then everyone wants you (and themselves) to be a Symm main - so look forward to that c:)
Weren’t you in one of my games? Gibraltar? Mercy on attack and Symmetra on defense? Probably not but the guy I played with had similar spread across their characters.
As long as you are not constantly playing Symmetra you are cool in my book.
Seriously. I’ve been playing Symmetra as my main go-to when someone else chooses Mercy since my alpha invite. I love Symmetra, I’ve done tons of clutch backdoor teleporters that literally wins us the game (still get told to KMS at the end of the game, while I get POTG for teamkilling. Nothing but me as Symmetra on kill feed killing the flankers, and the Genjis, barriering DVA bombs and saving my team from immediate death. Yet I still get NOTHING but abuse. People telling me to KMS, uninstall, go back to fortnite, etc etc.
On top of this all, I got my first ever warning for GRIEFING for playing Symmetra??? What’s the point in even playing Overwatch if I’m being forced into heroes that are perceived as meta because someone else thinks that’s the better choice. I’m scared to even play the game now, because I don’t feel like getting my account suspended because I only enjoy playing heroes that are really unique or can be the “unsung heroes” of matches.
I’ve tried playing heroes like Ana, Lucio, and Zen, I completely and utterly hate their playstyle, and not only that, I SUCK epic monkey nuts at them, so I’m just a dead waste of space when playing those characters.
Yeah it’s worse when another DPS knows they’re doing bad and then blaming their mistakes on you. I hope after her rework people would respect her more and stop harassing Symmetra players.
No abuse is ok. But if you think abusing a player for some reason at all is ok, then you and people like you are the reason abuse exists in this game.
Abuse is never ok. Grow up, and realize that the only way to get rid of abuse is to not be an abuser.
It’s not just the out of meta picks, ok story time with TheArchitec7 :
I was on Numbani yesterday on offence, and had 3.2k damage as Benji after the first attack including 2 dragon blades, by far one of my best games to this day, I was shocked after pressing tab and seeing such a number around 1 min 30s into the game, didn’t even know how I did it.
However at the end of the 1st round and after getting the payload across all 3 points, our other dps (DF) got the nerve to actually tell (not ask, TELL) me to swap because I was “useless”.
My reply was simple: “You definitely are not gold damage nor gold elims, I am clearly getting more picks than you are and performing better, yet you did not see me address you in any way, so why would you point out something like that?!”
(PS: I am very aware that gold damage gold elims don’t count for anything but still in that scenario it did to a certain degree considering his poor performance).
Funny part is yet to come, our Rein jumps in and says: “Yeah don’t worry mate, he doesn’t even have silvers, I have them”. Then the Zarya jumps in and claims the bronzes!
I simply said that, muted him and carried on with the game like nothing happened.
Bottom line, and the point behind all this:
It’s not about YOUR performance, people simply never assume that they are doing something wrong and tend to be self righteous and throw the shame and blame on someone else.
Sometimes, that is the “Thank you” you get for performing well and compensating for other team mates’ bad performance, other times you simply get carried so just take it and enjoy the free boost.
LMFAO the doomfist got what he deserve! That’s just sad, but like my account got suspended again for the same reason lol
Snowflake alert. (>"-")>
Symmetra main here aswell, i have 3 accounts. I get 3 suspension per season on all 3 accounts rouhgly. I even took picture of people reporting me before match even started, and people telling me they hope i die etc. And sent this in to blizzard support when i get my suspension. Only response you get is, read the code of conduct. They dont do anything about it,not once have i been unsuspended even with proof of tons of people reporting me for false reason. Normally when i get suspended it says ive been inactive or griefing. I have never been inactive while playing OW.
Sym main wonders why people get upset. Hint: maining the currently worst hero in the entire game is not helpfull at all. But oh well rework is about to come soon onto the live servers.
Why do you continue doing what you are doing? Some kind of principal, pride or?
In real world ppl tend to cooperate for most of the things getting done. Take any job for instance, or even children’s playground. There is always that kid/adult who is being shoved away, because he don’t conform/contribute for the bigger unit.
You can do whatever you want and play whoever you want. Just don’t whine after you see the results, I’m sorry for being honestly-rude.
It is the way of the world we live in, take a look even at the animal herds/prides. Even animals exclude others for various reasons.
I dont really understand what you mean? If you mean why im playing symmetra? Cus shes my favorite character to play, i like her style. I hit GM with Symmetra, having a 76% win rate of 101 matches. How do you now if i dont contribute? My results where pritty good. Maybe you should stop whining.
“If you weren’t accomplishing anything, got countered, and refused to switch, you earned the toxicity.”
I disagree with this, meaning no disrespect to the poster.
Toxicity as described in this thread is never “earned” and is not acceptable.
If you are trying your best at the game, and playing within the rules, then you shouldn’t have to experience this level of toxicity as OP noted. Many players who complain about what someone else is playing are poor at the game. The best players typically are quiet, or simply say good game win or lose.
Also, to OP, I would suggest not playing solo in comp mode. The toxic behavior is all over the game, in quick play, arcade, you name it. But in comp it is pretty much the status quo. I played it a couple years ago, and got to the level just above gold playing solo. Most games lost were due to quitters who filled the chat with all sorts of hate first. I had very little fun and decided it was not something I wanted to do. I mainly play Arcade mode now, but that continues to become more ugly in behavior as Overwatch continues to lose the bulk of it’s base while waiting for Overwatch 2.
The issue is not with the victims, as suggested. It’s behavior that is utterly immature, ugly, and would be met with severe backlash if it happened in real life where people could be held accountable.
