Error Applying Update (HF-1)

I have just downloaded the Christmas patch and upon opening the game I get the message “Error applying update, unknown error (HF-1)”. When trying to enter the practice range, a game or a while-you-wait lobby the game crashes, with the code HF-2, saying “Client requested disconnect”.

I have followed all of the steps in the article I was directed to (Overwatch Error: Unable to Install or Patch (PC), article 00028343), as well as deleting my Overwatch folder in %localappdata% and repairing the game through the BattleNet launcher.

Has anyone been able to solve this issue through means other than above?

Edit: I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the BattleNet launcher as per advice on another post. I have also reinstalled the game and still have this issue.

Hi, Rob! o/

Usually, the HF-1 error means that some data got corrupted, and I think you almost got the solution right. Go back to your %LocalAppData% folder, and delete “Blizzard Entertainment” (the folder, not the company, I like to have a job :stuck_out_tongue: ).

That solves this problem most of the time

Thank you very much for the help, I can now play Overwatch! Might I suggest this advice be added to the article players are directed to on receiving this error? (Assuming this fix is not specific to this patch, which it doesn’t sound like it is)

OMG…I F*ING LOVE YOU!!! was the original text. Apparently, Daddy Blizzard wants to make sure that I am a real person. The powers that be wont let post this without letting you know how awesome of a person you are for pointing out my imbecilic inadequacies in regards to the HF-1 error as I had found solutions such as this in the past, but hadn’t tried this solution for this particular error. I wish you well on your future endeavors, and may your lineage survive the ravages of time!

Thank you sooo much. I was dealign with this problem and couldn’t play for days. I really appreaciate your help. Thank you!

Thank you very much this helped fix my overwatch and i can finally play again!

this. hours spent reinstalling drivers, reinstalling overwatch, talking to support… And this fixed my problem. thanks

I deleted the files but when I go to skirmish and training it logs me out and gives me the same error. help.

Ok I fixed it by restarting my PC.

I’ve tried this and its still not working. Does anyone know why? please help T^T

I am running on Linux Mint OS and the game was running fine through Lutris however now it needs to apply a patch and most likely this Patch is an exe file … is there a solution to my problem ?

What do we do if we run it through Lutris on Linux Mint , is there a manual patch that i could download and manually update it or what? I think it is really unfair that none of the big tech companies really care about linux users , just come and take whatever they want

Hi there Emax93,

Overwatch is not available for Linux and while you may be able to get it working using third party software, it’s not something we can offer support for.

As the thread you posted in is on the older side and for a different issue, we’ll close it here but I hope you can figure something out or get up and running again on another supported platform.
