Hello,
I’ve only recently started experiencing an issue with the game that’s been making it near impossible to confidently play at all, especially in a competitive game mode. Randomly the game would freeze the screen on a single frame, but I would still hear audio/the game would continue. If I press buttons/act like I was playing, the game would register my movements/actions (for example, if I had an ult and pressed Q after the screen freeze had occurred I would still perform the ult in game, as I would hear it activate/etc). To add to this, even if I were to wait for a while, the screen wouldn’t recover, and I wouldn’t be able to force close it through any means, including task manager, unless I completely shut down/restart my PC. After doing some research I made sure to have no background programs open, made sure all my drivers were updated, and other steps that were said to help, but to no avail.
I’ve been playing regularly for a year and have never had this occur until very recently, about three weeks ago is when it first started, and I haven’t downloaded/changed anything on my PC that could’ve caused this. It’s been especially frustrating because I’ve been forced to leave competitive matches, causing a significant loss in SR, and nothing I’ve tried has solved this issue.
I’d appreciate any and all help I can get!
I’ve had this issue for quite a long time.
After I disabled the WIndows 10 game DVR thing + Nvidia overlay and made the Blizzard launcher auto-close the issue went away.
Then the Windows 10 creators update hit, and the issue came back.
It had re-enabled the game bar, iirc. so I just disabled it again and freezes stopped.
After the last patch (Overwatch patch) the problem returned, only this time I already have both overlays and the launcher disabled!
What am I supposed to do now?!
What’s odd is that after it freezes once or twice, it doesn’t seem to re-occur on the same day again.
Yesterday it froze once, and I was able to play for the rest of the day with no issues. I no-lifed, played the whole day like a gremlin!
I have a hunch that it might have something to do with something that only occurs a few times per day.
Perhaps it freezes when the GPU software or Windows 10 make an automatic check for updates, or some such.
Then again I did enable the new gaming-mode thing and it doesn’t seem to help.
Hello Cobalt and LastDay,
If you’ve tried troubleshooting and it didn’t help, we would need to check your system files. Please create your DxDiag and MSInfo files:

You can paste the content of each file on a web like Pastebin and provide us with the links. If it doesn’t let you publish your message because of the links, try to paste them using the preformatted text option (</> button).

Just thought to give an update, I actually got a new gaming laptop (for an unrelated reason), and guess what? It gets the same freezing.
Completely different SSD on it, too.
I did, however, transfer a copy of the game client rather than redownload it from online.
Here’s hoping that the big patch (that requires re-downloading the whole client) fixes this.
Also, I remember hearing that for someone their Dolby Surround Sound being enabled caused freezes in Overwatch.
For some, it’s apparently caused by the Blizzard launcher being on while the game is running.
Wonder what’s doing it for me.
Maybe my mouse’s or headset’s software.
I’d start by installing the game from scratch on the new PC. Usually copying the game installation doesn’t give any trouble, but it can happen.

I know this is an incredibly late reply, but I figure you’d prefer this over me making a new thread.
Maybe this information will help you somehow.
I actually did what you asked, possibly in Dec 2018.
Reinstalling from scratch significantly lowered the number of freezes.
I still get them, but it’s far more rare now.
Instead of getting them every day (sometimes 2-3 times in a day) it seems I get it once every few days.
I also lowered my settings from Ultra to High and I’ve noticed that sometimes I get this weird stagger where everything “lags” for a bit, but it then it recovers.
I’ve been wondering if it’s tied to the freezing somehow, as I don’t remember seeing it before.
Perhaps something stresses the client, and while it previously just outright froze it now sometimes just staggers and recovers.
I should probably track my temperatures, Monster Hunter World did something similar due to overheating issues, before I lowered voltage a little bit.
