Hey I am just very curious, I am from wow, I know how forum works, I got gifted overwatch, I am pretty new, but every game I play there are either people being very high level that spawn camp us, or there is people who are low level who are extremely good, I did not see this match making coming, its no fun for me at least who are a new player, my first round on quick play was against people having golden thingy around their name, others with a lot of stars and high level, many low levels who play the purple sniper lady and spawn shoot my teamates, is this a common thing that me as new get placed with these people, because so far I am not enjoying my gametime on overwatch what so ever ;(
Matchmaking in QP is rather random. It tries to make fair matches but when it takes too long, it lowers its fairness priority to increase the chance of finding a match.
Groups make it more difficult because the players in that group can have a huge skill gap.
Also, as a new player, your MMR might still be wonky. After time, your MMR is better calculated and the quality of those games increases a bit.
In general, QP is taken a lot less serious so players don’t care much about composition or hero picking. That’s why you see the sniper lady (Widowmaker) or a team without tanks or supports often.
The best gameplay quality is possible by playing with friends and using the LFG feature. Other than that, competitive has better Matchmaking because it discards games with a winchance of 40% or below. It also is taken more seriously so you can hope for better teamwork there.
Regarding the good low-lvl players, those might be downrank smurfs, alternative accounts where they play terribly on purpose to play against low-lvl players in the future. Sadly, there is no solution to prevent them yet but all I can reckon you is to stop focusing on the lvl or rank and see the good gold border player as just a good player. With the right mentality, the game becomes less frustrating.
Lastly, and I can’t stress that enough, if you want the best gameplay experience:
Gl and Hf in your future matches!
Oh alright that’s understandable I guess, thanks for the tips
Yes with friends its highly recommended, as a dps player look for a sup/tank main, as tank the other 2 and as support tank and dps.
I play as dps with a dps/sup and tank, therefore I can always count on one dps, one sup. And one tank to play with.
Just keep in mind that Overwatch is designed for 6er teams, theres not one owl team just randomly rolled together.
So playing along means the worst case scenario.
(smurfs and trolls, if not exclusively triggered by you, should be equal on both teams in the long run)
what’s a smurf? i dont really know what that means
A Smurf, in general, is a second account used to play with a reset MMR / SR (Matchmaking Rating / Skill Rating). There are two types of smurfs in Overwatch:
Legit smurfs: Those often play only one hero or a limited hero pool to learn those without ruining their ranks on their main account. They still play seriously and thus are basically just like every player.
Downrank smurfs: Those are the nasty ones. They play terribly on purpose to get on a low rank so they outplay weaker players out of malicious joy (or they want to play with their lower ranks), what they do is actually against the rules because it is gameplay sabotage (first they throw games, then they make matches extremely unfair by being way better than the others). However, there isn’t a solution to stop downrank smurfs without hurting innocent players.
Personally, I don’t think I’ve met many smurfs or at least I didn’t care. I just looked at them as players so if they actually are a downrank smurf, I would see it as a challenge. It’s especially fun if they play Widowmaker and I kill them as mercy.
so when good people play bad on quick play, they get in the quick play raiting I am in?
Well, that depends on you. They generally aim to play against terrible players. The worse your MMR, the higher the chances of downrank smurfs to appear. Just give your best and you’ll get better and thus, you will see less downrank smurfs (if you can identify those)
Right now, your MMR might still be wonky but once you’ve reached lvl 26 (when you can play comp), your MMR will reflect your skill almost perfectly.
Of course, your chances of playing against downrankers is smaller when playing in a group. After all, when playing alone (solo queue), you have the lowest chances of finding a balanced match.
Thanks for all the tips, but what happens when I do those things at level 26?
Welcome to Overwatch
Right now Ovrerwatch is in a really bad state, atleast in my opinion.
I hope you enjoy your stay, have fun and you could also watch guides or streamers to learn more about the game also.
Also careful. you may approach some toxic teammates if you are playing on your own and not with friends.
You are talking about competitive mode, correct?
When starting comp, you need to play 10 placement matches first (every season). A comp match is longer than a qp-match (exept for king of the hill maps).
Both teams have the chance of playing attack and defense. If your team manages to push the payload to the end but the other team doesn’t, you will win. However, if both teams manage to push the payload, both teams play a second round with the remaning time of your attack round (at least 1 minute is granted). Same case as previous round, if your team push the payload sucessfully and the others don’t, you’ll win.
If you actually fail to push the payload, victory is determined by the next round. If the opponents push the payload further than you, the opponents will win. If they don’t, you will win.
In Comp, you will gain a rank with a score, the so called Skill Rating (SR), this score rises and falls, depending on wherther you win or lose. How much SR you win or lose depend on multiple factors other than simply winning or losing. For example, from Bronze to Platinum, you will gain more SR and lose less SR if you perform better than the average player of your rank.
The placement matches aren’t as scary as they seem. Players found out that those placement matches are actually normal matches and your SR of the previous season just moves over to the next season. However, this will be your first comp season so when doing the placement matches - this hasn’t been confirmed - The system will give you an inital SR, based on your MMR, which increaces or decreaces with the placement matches.
There is one important rule in competitive mode: Never Leave! If you leave the game, you will be penalized with a score penalty and even suspension. They are rather harless first but it can result in a complete season suspension. Whether that disconnect was due to a crash or a rage quit doesn’t matter because both will be punished equally. As a recommendation, play comp matches only if you are sure that your PC and internet connection are stable.
Lastly, as MrFat said, expect rude players when playing, especially in Comp. Overwatch is a competitive and teamwork heavy game so people can get frustrated and start blaming others fairly easily. Just keep a positive mentality and brush rude behavior over your shoulder. If it is too much for you, you can always mute and report players but other than that.
Good luck and Have fun in your next matches
But will I get into games with people being very good at comp if they have done their placements, and what happens if I lose a lot but still played good?
No, Comp games are a lot more balanced than QP games. As a bronze player, for example, you will never play against or with a diamond player. There is also a system where when your team SR and the opponent’s team SR differs too much, the game simply won’t start a match and search for a fairer team. If a match is still a bit unfair and your winchance is lower than a fair 50%, you will gain more SR on a victory and lose less SR on a defeat.
At platinum rank or below, you still lose SR but if you have played good, better than the average player of your rank, you will lose less SR than usual.
Basically competitive has ranks. The game will you give the rank that matches the best to your performance and MMR.
You will also be against players of the same Skill Rating.
The game will try to balance it out.
Alright I think I get most of it, but like at my first comp, how does the game know what rank I am at the start of it? or does they place me to that after the first placement, or do they take my stats from quick play?
Most likely, It takes your stats from quick play. Specifically, it uses your MMR. It’s a hidden score that determines your skill over all your matches.
To clarify, MMR can be changed by quick play, competitive and arcade. SR can be changed by competitive only.
These lines are what gave your story away. It’s obvious you’re an Overwatch player, just on a new account.
I would strongly advice you to start by playing matches against bots (training -> practice vs AI -> medium bots, or if you feel that it’s too easy: hard bots). Sure, while you won’t learn how to play against other humans, that’s not your priority at first. You have to get to know 19 maps (14 of those with distinct roles between the teams, so in effect 33 maps) and 29 heroes, and while that doesn’t mean you have to know the location of every health pack and have to play every hero, you should at least get a feel for all the common movement routes and you should be able to identify all the heroes on sight and have an approximate clue as to how they might annoy you. I know that this might sound like a chore, which is why you should play against bots - that way you don’t need to have the feeling that your performance comes first, but you can try stuff out, take your time to test abilities and maybe even just watch the action. You just play around, have fun and still win 9 out of 10 games.
During this time, you should at least try out the 3 different hero roles (support/tank/damage) to see which playstyle you like best, and once you picked a role, you might want to experiment with different heroes within that role.
There will come a time where you read a maps name and immediately know which way you have to go - that’s the point where I find it reasonable to try jumping into Quick Play. QP however is quite often rather toxic and badly balanced, which is why I started playing the arcade mode “Mystery Heroes” very early. In that mode with every death you get a random new hero, which will greatly increase your knowledge of the game, interactions between heroes and party compositions. But for now: stick to bots, it’s for your own good.
No I am actually new at the game, I got gifted overwatch legendary pack from a friend, never been interested in the game because I’ve heard that people are very toxic as I knew before, the purple lady is Widowmaker but i have just started studying the game, so no I am fresh, and I still dont understand how people have golden thing around their name, and stars and stuff, i dunno how it works I am currently level 15, so I really don’t get ur point in being so mean about my asking about stuff I really wanna know about the game, but if u think I am a long lasting player I’ll take it as a compliment
For every 10 levels you get a new frame. For every 100 levels you get a star. Every 500 levels your frame changes colour.
