People who have been main’ing Genji for some time, keep doing that if you like, but here is a tip to all the new players why you shouldn’t take green-silver cyborg KAKKOI ninja as your main.
I’ll go in detail, why he got a passive to nerf with almost no changes later
Introduction:
Genji has one of the worst scalings for rank vs hours in this game. At the start, you scale quite quickly but then grind to a halt at around gold. You need to spend around 4x the number of hours as almost any other hero to achieve the same growth as improving.
Why you shouldn’t play him
First, you can take characters like Reaper, Winston, Briggite who don’t require a lot of learning to be useful and then scale a bit slower than other characters (Soldier, McCree, widowmaker, Doomfist, Sombra etc.) as they are simpler characters, hence you can learn how to counter them easier, but are still useful.
For example, I have 180h+ (yes, I will get people who say I HAVE 1000h as Genji), and I can pick up almost any other hero and do better or as good as him with less than 10h (Sombra, McCree, soldier, reaper, Hanzo etc.)
The BS behind this is that, that you can be better as almost any character and grind for infinity, and stay at the same rank. Now, there are pro Genji mains for the reason, Genji is extremely fun to play, so they just do it out of passion, but they shouldn’t be punished by having to grind a lot more than other players to achieve the same things.
Should you still play a bit of Genji, if you are only a dps main?
ONE, pick up at least 1 tank and support that you can be useful as. It’s a must (for me It’s Winston, as It’s my biggest counter when I played, so I just picked him up to learn how to counter him, and mercy, to learn how she plays to kill her easier).
TWO*, Genji has a bit of different play style in this game, pick him up for 5-10h just to learn how he works, so you could counter him in later, and maybe use him on a dive comp (where he is still kinda useful), but there are other choices for DPS heroes in dive.
The deflect nerf
If people didn’t notice, there was a patch (around 3~ months ago), where they slightly nerfed Genji’s deflect, so it would correspond with the animation/effect. Now, IMO it’s a huge nerf, as now it’s WAY easier for McCree’s to throw a flash a bit above my head (Like taking down rein’s shield with throwing his flash slightly above his head, which takes a bit of practice), which I kinda like, for the reason, it makes more of a skillful duel, but right now it’s too easy, as you could have done it before the nerf. Also, the AOE abilities (Junkrat and Pharah), have a bit of problem. one example: if you use Pharah’s ultimate, and shoot straight at Genji, by RNG, there is around 33% chance (my experience, not real data on the chance percentage, but it does happen), that Pharah will kill you before you kill her, cause some rockets got behind me, cause of the nerfed deflect and did AOE damage to me and killed me from behind, which shouldn’t really have to happen.
AND for the end, PASSIVE NERFS
How New Heroes and Changes to existing ones made genji weaker against them.
-
Briggite is a counter to Genji with her bash (deflect won’t help), makes him easy picking.
-
Moira doesn’t care about the shield, can chase you down, 1v1 good Genji will win, but Moira is a support, a DPS should have a hard time fighting a sup. Also, counters or strongly negates Genji’s Ult.
-
Zen got a boof, which I’m happy for, cause he is not more playable, but that also means, there is a higher chance to have hard counters to Genji’s ult in a game.
-
Doomfist, he can bypass deflect if he gets close enough or just rocket punches you to space (note, Genji still can be useful 1v1 against doomfist, but you have to dodge his rocket punch attack)
-
Hammond doesn’t do a lot of damage, but his ult makes genji’s dash hard to use, as you can’t dash near enemies, cause normally, there are mines near them.
-
Because of the Deflect nerf, Ana’s nade is easier to hit and she can punch you past your deflect to 80ish hp, then 1-2hits, depending on the circumstances)
-
Junkrat’s concussion mines can bypass deflect, kill him or get low easily.
-
Mei has got a visual change, which might bring some new meis to the game, which might have a ripple effect later, where they get used to Genjis and counter them easier.
-
Sombra’s hacks now don’t allow Genji’s dodge play style, where he is easy picking.
These are my reasons, why new players shouldn’t play genji.
also, I could go on a bit, how some maps should get some collision changes, as there are some miscellaneous objects that cancel out my climb and gets me killed, like at the Temple of Anubis, when you are the attacker and captured the first point. You leave your spawn area, and there is a wall in front of you, so you have to climb in certain way. Now, if you don’t save your double jump (where most Genji mains don’t they just bash the button to dodge) you will mostly die. I also posted this on reddit and it has a link with the example.
I know a few other places in the game like this, but this is the most annoying one I encounter.
Edit. I just posted it and saw how long it is. Damn… It’s looks like a hate speech xD
Now Jeff, just hit my dms, And we will fix it fam
