How do I Improve if I suck at the game?

My mechanical skill is absolute crap. My positioning is garbage. My game senses that of a person who hasn’t touched overwatch. Any heroes I touch immediately become crap. I wanted to play DPS, tank, even support. I was good at none of them.

I know there’s a lot of stuff wrong with overwatch. I know there are also some pretty good things as well. I acknowledge I’m a silver newb who knows nothing about the game. I know some people will just say something along the lines of “just play more” or “think about” blank.
So I ask the forums, you guys, a bunch of people who consist of everyone from bronze to the top 1% of Overwatch.

So I ask:

How does one improve, specifically on DPS roles, including everyone from attack to defense. My supports and tank roles I am able to play to a decent enough level. However, when it comes to DPS, I’ll always die too quickly, or I won’t kill anything. Sometimes I’ll be faced with genuinely bad teams; however, in the end, it comes down to my mechanical sill, game sense, and positioning not being up to par. I’m not afraid to say I suck at the game.

To summarize, I am a silver newb, about fall back into bronze. I can’t seem to hit anything with any heroes. When I play heroes like Genji, Doomfist, Tracer, I end up doing absolutely nothing. So, for all heroes that can be classified as damage dealing, I ask the forums; How does one improve mechanical skill, positioning, and gamesense? I will take any criticism or bad mouthing; improving is my only goal, after all.

Thank you for reading.

PS-I’ve also posted in general as well. In case anyone wants to answer there.

Answered in general.

Specifically on DPS? Play a ton of FFA or deathmatch. Search in custom games for tryhard or aim practice lobbys.

You just have to play and get used to each character and what they can do to counter you and others.

Don’t try to 1v2.
Don’t trickle in .
Don’t stand still or in the open.
Keep you healers and tanks up.
Be in comms even if you aren’t talking.
Switch if you aren’t doing anything or are countered.

Don’t trickle in.
Don’t trickle in.

Hey

Here are a few things to know.

Aim Practice

You can use the custom game mode, to add AI bots, and keep focusing on landing critical headshots. Create a custom game with 6 Ana’s on the enemy team, and ensure that they can only do damage on landing head shots.
Now the bot Ana’s won’t damage you and you can work on your aim.

Find an optimal DPI / In-game sensitivity that your comfortable with.
Get a good enough mouse, and a mouse mat.
Keep practicing to warm up your shots, and then move into Death Matches to keep warming up more against human players.
Aiming is more of muscle memory, when you keep doing it enough you’ll get to a point were your reflexes will get your mouse pointer to the head.

Use Audio Cues

Go to your Sound settings and turn on Dolby Atmos, to help with better positioning audio.

Streamline the Frame rates of your Computer

Generally your idea is to keep the FPS at a constant and not fluctuate.
You can turn on stats to see what your in-game FPS ( Go to Options -> Video -> Display Performance Stats -> On)
Lower your graphics settings to Low, and play at 1920 x 1080 at the highest frame rate your monitor can handle.
Generally having 144 hz is good, but 240 hz is better.
You’ll need to ensure your FPS, is stable and isn’t spiking around too much.
If you notice them spiking then Limit FPS manually to a number you find suitable for your PC. (Options -> Video -> Limit Fps -> Custom, and type in a number that is optimal for your PC)

Gain game sense and knowledge about the game

There are a number of ways to learn how to play a particular hero quite well.
Watching popular streamers, can be one way to pick up some new tricks.
You can gain knowledge about the game by using tons of content out there on the internet, like these forums, youtube guides etc…

Finally game sense is another very important factor, which you gain by playing games and understanding how to best position your hero.
Now there are a ton of tactics that you’ll need to understand as you start climbing the ladder, and it’s impossible to learn every one of them when your starting off.
So don’t bother learning everything in one go.
Start with the basics, improve your mechanics. Lean what every hero in this game can do in terms of there skills. It’s important to know whom it’s worth prioritizing.

I hope this provides enough information to get you started.

Google “overanalyzed” and look at videos for your heroes. You’re bound to get a lot of tips.

I like the reply that Star above has given. That’s pretty good advise that should help you. If I may, I’ll add on a few more to it as well:

  1. Pay attention to team compositions. If you have Winston dva players on your side, it’s good for Dps heroes with mobility. Genji, pharah/tracer

Pay attention to the opponents side too, using reaper when they have a hog/Winston as the frontline is advantageous to your team.

  1. Watching videos, you should pay very close attention to positioning and timing.

Example in hanamura - where are the widows constantly moving around to always have a good line of sight and create multiple angles of fire on the enemy.

Or

Soldier, where does he go and WHEN exactly does he engage the fight and pull out the tech visor

  1. communicate, example; you have an Ana on your side, let her know your ult intentions early, coordinate well things like nano boost visor, or graviton/deathblossom

Also, communicate to know whom is using what so that u do not blow ults needlessly.

As Star pointed out earlier, there’s too much to learn at one go so I too would suggest, pick a hero or two first. Soldier and reaper are good places to start for more forgiving type of mechanics.

Pharah is good at lower ellos too if you take time to learn her and how to avoid her counters whilst sill doing damage

I’m not great at Dps as i too at a tank/support player. But some skills on playing zarya/dva have translated to decent tracking skills on soldier

And playing Reinhardt has greatly contributed to knowing where and when to engage with tracer and reaper

I’m able to survive in high plat and fringe diamond games on Dps, so if I’m able to do this, I’m sure you can too, since all my friends tell me I have absolutely sloth like reactions in video games :joy:

Ill summ up every single overanalyzed:
“Wow you have really good aim, I cant understand why you are stuck at your rank you deserve much more but you could improve by getting high ground”

Guess we’ve seen different videos.

To me your issues like ‘dying quickly’ seems to be a problem with your positioning, when I used to play dps (I played a lot of genji) i hugged corners quite a lot and played around them as they are easy cover and waited for the perfect oppuritities to go in with the tanks and healers. Gain more experience is all i can say, and because your issue sounds to be positioning based, i wouldn’t go do FFA unless your aim is extremely bad, aim will come in time but your positioning will get better as you improve from mistakes

Nah ive pretty much seen every one of them. Pretty good entertainment but not really helpful if you want to learn. Search fro Jayne’s coaching videos. Those are way better.

Don’t bother, this game punishes mechanical skill and rewards spam. Play CS or pick a fighting game.

I do see your point, especially when looking at plat and below, but positioning often is the problem in lower ranks, and I think there are some tidbits inbetween the “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? YOU SHOULD BE UP THERE!”-moments, regarding ult management etc.

Will def check out Jayne though, managed to miss them.

Well people are lower ranks because they make more mistakes. The less mistakes you make the higher you will climb. Play perfect (like some low ranks claim lol) and your ez top 500 and you will be showered with OWL contracts. Well you will be called hacker at first for sure because humans makes mistakes, even pro players do mistakes.

No pro players get lucky with their team-mates not leaving, and people stay in silver because their team sucks. Didn’t you know?

True. They are just always lucky. Even when doing solo q bronze to gm/top500 they always get lucky, those lucky bastards.

Dude, Jayne is awesome! Thanks for pointing him out.

“A third of your games will be wins no matter what you do, and another third will be losses no matter what. The outcome of the last third of games is a direct result of your personal performance, and will determine your SR.”

Love the quote, and something people need to come to terms with

Positioning is most important (after team play, but you cant train your team).
Train first heroes that don’t need aim, so you only have to focus on positioning. Like Winston, moira, reinhardt, briggete.

Also there is nothing wrong with being bad at dps and good in tank/support. The amount of good tanks/support in lower tiers are very rare. But there are still many good (with aim) DPS players in lower tier.(also lots of bad too).

Well thats pretty much true when you are at your “own” SR. For those who moan they are way below their “real” SR your own part grows exponentially depending how much lower they think they are. Lets say some bronze thinks hes really gold, hes personal performance should impact heavily on at least 80% of the games.
