How do I play Roadhog?

I got into playing this game a while ago and I’ve found Roadhog to be my favourite hero although I’m not very good at playing him. I’m looking for tips to improve.

Some general tips :

  1. Learn his secondary fire sweet-spot. Play around with that one bot in the training range that has measuring tools.

  2. Try to land a primary fire or secondary fire before hooking someone if at all possible. The hook combo is sometimes inconsistent and will fail to one-shot if the hero isn’t damaged.

  3. Pay attention to which one of your teammates is taking the most pressure. Back them up. This tip applies to all tanks too

Pre shoot right click before hooking so you guaranteed to land the hook, if you miss right click you gonna miss the hook anyway, and if you hit the right click you can often finish of your hooked target after landing the hook.

Its only good against characters without escapes. Do it against a Moira and she presses shift, your hook misses anyway.

Just gonna mention a few things that hasn’t already been said.

  1. Stay near corners and peak shoot to keep up your dps when shields are down. This will allow you to keep pressuring the enemy while not feeding too much ult charge.
  2. Don’t be afraid to spam enemy shields, it will either break the shield to provide openings for you to engage, or it will put enough pressure on the enemy tanks to make it hard for them to engage.
VS Rein + Zarya be careful spamming directly at the Rein as you risk just charging the Zarya, instead shoot the shield right next to him or at squishies behind it.
  3. when you land a hook, you can turn up to 90° to put the target in a position that makes it harder for them to escape (mostly useful vs tanks). Can also be used to hook people off edges.
  4. look for enemies trying to make big plays and use hook/ult to disrupt/deny them. (this can be a big time game saver)
  5. Use your big hit box to body block and deny enemies from getting through narrow paths. (like denying a transcending Zen getting through a door to heal his team)

If you hit the right click and hook in perfect succession the difference is literally a nano second, simply hooking a moira is worse as she’s likely to survive the hook + shot combo due to her awkward hitbox

First off no, you can kill her with your combo, you can even kill Ana without using melee. Second, the hook is projectile, abilities like fade, wraith walk and blink are instant. You need not only perfect reactions but also perfect connection to “nanosecond” the other player. I can guarantee you you’ll fail way more often than not doing this unless there is no way to kill them without that shot like in Reaper’s case.

If she sees you coming then yes, an instant hook is very marginally better but otherwise hit the right click to confirm the kill. Sure, you can kill Ana without the melee, but is it very likely? No, it’s not. To the point of being extremely unlikely.

I think I’ve played him enough to say it is very likely, with enough experience you’ll be able to one shot almost every time you hook a 200 HP character. In fact after not playing him for months I find myself missing kills more often which only solidifies it.

Also there is the matter of risk/reward. Shooting someone with a one button instant escape is risky, its not a certain kill. So you end up with either a) leaving them on a sliver of their health after a failed combo so they have to run and heal or get finished by your team or b) taking out a sliver of their health with the right click and letting them get away and be immediately ready to retaliate.

Can’t say I’m playing him exceptionally often, but I have won 25 of my last 29 QP games with him. But as you seem to know, that’s just his thing - in QP he rules supreme (yes, I can see that you have an excellent win rate there), but in CP he doesn’t quite hold up. In a 1-0-5 comp, he’s awesome, but in 2-2-2 he doesn’t quite bring to the table what other off tanks do - if you even want to call him an off tank…
If you want to make him work, you’d want the main tank to play Orisa for the “ball and chain” combo, if the main tank in the team doesn’t want to play Orisa, it’s probably better to be flexible yourself. When you do play him, make sure to keep an eye on your backline to protect them, not just rush ahead. Or use him as a straight up flanker…

Look up a yt video called “1 roadhog tip for every hero”

Atm the best way to play him is to go in spawn press “H” and select Rein, Zarya or D.va.

He has his place next to Orisa in maps with huge holes in the middle. But thats it.

Given alot of people seem to be giving good enough tips as is, here’s one that is important:

After you hook someone, Aim for their head hitbox and try and follow up with a quick melee. Should be enough to kill those with 200 health. Or around there and if done quick enough, the Likes of Genji and Moria shouldn’t have time to escape, if they do escape, they are very low so you’re gonna not have to deal with them for a few seconds.

(His glory days were best tho… well, Hog 3.0 before the rework was, imo)

Watch your ammo. Nothing worse then hooking with an empty barrel.

Correct me if im wrong but on thinner enemies I always go for a body shot with primary to get a fuller brunt of the spread.

You can do that, but I feel like trying to get a headshot would be more worth it on a thinner character, given headshots are stronger.

But whatever works for you is fine.

Where to aim with shotgun type weapons depends on the distance compared to the hitbox and bullet spread.
If you are close enough for every pellet to hit the head, aim straight for the head.
The further away you get the more you should aim for center of mass, although you generally want the crit box within the spread area.
This should have the same average amount of pellets hit the head, but a higher total amount hit the character.

Stay behind cover above anything else. Just come out to hook, kill and move back behind shield or cover (even better if you can just do it from behind shield) and fill the time with right clicks. That is your job basically I would say :). Hog might not be the best hero when the fight is happening all around you imo.
Also work the enemy shields.
Also quickly strafing in and out from behind a corner and use right clicks can work well.
Keep an eye on your HP bar, don’t heal when ana nades you. This may be obvious but you in the middle of the fight you might forget it and waiting just one or 2 seconds might make all the difference between no heal and full heal. Just in general keep an eye on Ana she gets kicks out of it when she nades you. Your breather is your only “escape” from death
