How do I stop getting angry so such?

So I basically don’t bother with comp because what I played of it originally just annoyed me and went back to just QP and arcade which was fine for ages. But I’ve notice recently that even in QP I start getting angry, for example when I get killed several times in a row or if I get killed by a Symmetra lock on or a Genji ult (2 heroes I’ve always found annoying although I don’t think they’re unbalanced or anything.).
It bothers me because if I’m getting this angry just in QP, I don’t even want to think what I would be like in comp. I don’t want to become one of “those” players. I never take out my anger in chat or on mic or anything like that, I just try and remain silent and when I play with friends and not solo, I’m perfectly calm pretty much all the time regardless of what happens.
But I don’t want it to spill over into toxic behaviour when playing solo. Any ideas how I can try and stop myself getting tilted so easily?

Ow should be a fun way to spend ur free time on…
Its clearly u dont have a good time

I dont play comp anymore becuz i got mad as well… So triggered that i was like ,what the heck am i doin… Its a damn game… (i took a break for almost 7 months also)

I solo most of the time, and play qp and sometimes arcade… and yep it can be really annoying…

If i dont have a good time… The exit button is 1 push away… That easy…

Maybe you play thinking “I have to play well” instead of “let’s try to improve”. You play for the win (I do too), but you need to be in a more positive mindset. When you die : why did you die ? Is it bad positionning ? Is it due to lack of mechanics ? What can you do to improve it.

ANd to be fair, QP is made of a lot of people not caring. Maybe you’d actually get less angry in comp when people actually try (apart from trolls) and talk to signal ennemy positions, etc…

I’m not sure if my way of staying calm helps you, so take it with a grain of salt:

First of all, take it easy.
Remind yourself that you are just playing a game that you enjoy.

A victory can be satisfying but a defeat shouldn’t bother you.
“It’s just a game after all”

Sometimes it might help to stay positive. Saying “gl hf” at the beginning of each match, motivating your teammates to give their best, and laughing mistakes off might help you to keep a clear mind.

I screw up so many times in matches, both QP and competitive, but I don’t get frustrated. If I ran right into a beartrap or got booped out of the map, I won’t get angry but laugh about myself for being so clumsy.

Lastly, even if it sound’s rather controversial, don’t blame your team for any mistakes at all. There were some cases where one player’s performance was just terrible. However, realizing it just causes you to get more upset because “in the end, you couldn’t change anything”.

Instead of saying “that Hanzo should have switched”, you could say “we should have discussed the composition better”. Instead of saying “stop throwing the game” you could say “Don’t give up, we can still win this”

By staying optimistic and trying to find a way to add yourself as a reason for failure, you can feel like you have things under control.

However, if the game really makes you go bananas, take a step back and pause the game for a few days.

Just to explain my personality in video games, I’m similar to this guy:

so again, take my advice with a grain of salt ^^

@Ayunu That’s an interesting perspective and I think you may be right. I’m neither a good nor bad player, i think of myself as being somewhere in the middle but there’s always room for improvement. I think you might also be right about playing comp instead of QP for a bit, I never thought about it that way because I had such a bad time when I used to play comp.

@Brendes I usually go quit when I get too angry and just take some time to cool off. Which does help a bit.

@FatBluDragon That’s actually a good point about not giving up just because things are going badly, I have a tendency to rage quit when things go badly. In fact this is a prime example I had a couple of games before posting. Attacking on Route 66, it started out really badly with us not even being able to get the payload to the first checkpoint before it when into overtime and I was getting ready to rage quit again, however I stayed in the game (Mainly from a desire to get a sick Reaper death blossom lol) and we got it to the second point in overtime again, then on the final point I got my positioning and timing right and we wiped their team twice and won the game. (which apparently angered the other team but whatever lol). As Ayunu said, I think it’s more my problem in terms of my positioning etc because I had my positioning down perfectly to snatch a triple death blossom on the final point in that game whilst my team mates mopped up the rest of them. Also maybe playing comp would be better since I’m in QP and people just don’t go with good team compositions because they don’t care, which is reasonable.

Quit playing the game.

Getting angry and aggressive over little things that wouldn’t normally enrage you is often a sign of depression. I know because even though very competitive and critical I am pretty much immune to being tilted in games but at some point stress and real life issues forced me to quit competitive play and almost Overwatch because I would fly in to a rage if someone made a even an honest mistake let alone if they were trolling, throwing or smurfing to point I would break mice and keyboards. Now that’s behind me I’ve dipped my toe back in to competitive and sure the lack of game sense, smurfs and kids who refuse to play a team shooter as a team frustrate me I’m cool as a cucumber and use my wit and words to put these people in their place and move on to the next game.

yeah going to take a brake now :frowning:
i caught myself getting angry in chat… so time to take a break.

a shame that blizzard won’t fix the problem though… in HotS they fixed the matchmaker (to some extend) in beta and they improved to this day.

OW matchmaker feels like it’s getting worse every day

In the words of Zarya: “It’s only a game, why do you have to be mad?”

Play to have fun, if you’re not having fun, don’t play.

The problem with trying to have “fun” in qp and arcade is that almost nobody is ever in vc so the art of actually working and synergizing together as a team, almost never really happens.

So that leaves comp, the only place to really be able to experience what Overwatch should be, season to season, meta to meta. My best advice is to just try and have fun as you learn and grow as a player. If you stumble upon a couple bad apples on the way, just mute/block/report and move on. No need to pick them up and take a bite and carry around a bad taste with you.

Get good. It sounds like a meme but it’s true. You enjoy games way more when you play good and know you are really good. Whenever I play good I never care about getting killed.

It’s were OW failed as a game, to be honest. Unlike so many other games where it’s hard to get toxic, with OW it’s easier to flip. What can I say it’s just the way it is.

That’s the #1 reason people stop playing the game, besides anything else.
Why do you think they are investing into learning users chat patterns with Machine Learning recently ? They want to catch and kill toxicity, coz that’s one of the factors that cause people to flip.

I been playing a lot of League of Legends lately, compared to OW because it’s a lot more fun, and not easy to flip… People just have a nice time whether they are winning or losing and it doesn’t stress you out. Blizz could learn a thing or two from these other games and try improve things. But at it’s core I still love what OW as a game is, it’s just that the community around it that have a way of getting on your nerves :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t know, I’m a 44 year old guy with a family who always finds my gaming a time to chill out. I never get tilted (and mostly play comp).

I guess with an increased maturity level more people can come to your state. Sadly that’s not the case with majority of OW’s player base :frowning:

this stupid game is making me so angry all the time when i play and i become at my worst. I took a break and felt amazing…

listen to music, if ur team is so bad just ignore them then and don’t fight in chat. Basically play your own game if you see someone’s gonna be a d***head

i haven’t read a single response on here, so i’m apologizing if someone else already suggested this. I recently felt the same way about OW. I would get frustrated very easily and I wasn’t enjoying playing. Then I browsed through the custom games and found a 500% vs A.I. and OMG it was a blast.
Alternately, you could try:

  • Play a game with whatever hero your cursor lands on when the hero pick screen comes up.
  • Go achievement hunting (personal favorite)
  • Look for new vantage points on maps
  • Turn on your own music

I hardly get tilted but when i do ive honestly thought about getting a punching bag to lay into between rounds lol
