I have a 6 core i5 and a gtx 1060.
Overwatch is locked at 100 FPS, settings low with a few on medium.
My CPU is running all 6 cores at 4K 100% and my GPU at 90% how do I stop this game massively overusing my system?
I have the same setup with 16GB RAM and I happened to play with it on a 4K monitor (Dell UP3216Q) for a period of time.
If you are playing on a 4K monitor chances are good that it is only a 60Hz. For this reason I’d simply turn on V-Sync. This automatically lock the FPS to the refresh rate of the resolution you’ve set (probably 60) and unlike the manual FPS limiter the V-Sync eliminates tearing too in exchange for introducing a bit of input latency (you probably won’t notice it). When using V-Sync you don’t have to set a manual FPS cap, you just have to make sure that you use the right video resolution with the right refresh rate.
As a next step lower your video settings a bit: turn off some unnecessary things that use a lot of GPU but aren’t very noticeable when turned off: like ambient occlusion, reflections, etc. You can also lower some settings from epic/ultra to simply high, it looks good.
Then either set the renderscale to AUTO or 75% or 50% as necessary. When it comes to resolution always use the native resolution of the monitor! Use 4K resolution and play with the renderscale if necessary. Using a non-native resolution with your monitor will make the menus, hud and corsshair look blurry. Using a fix renderscale might help in lowering your CPU/GPU usage. I personally used medium/high-ish video settings with AUTO renderscale that calibrated itself to 66%. Setting it to a fix value might help you to have better control over your GPU usage if you want it to be well below 100%.
Meanwhile you should use some kind of software that can display some stats (gpu/cpu usage, fps) while you are tweaking, this way its easier to decide how dumb settings and how high gpu/cpu usage you want.
CPU usage depends mostly on FPS, not resolution. The usage of my i5 8600k is around 40-50% with a stable/constant/capped 120FPS (but now I use a 144Hz 2K monitor) and I have a large NH-D15 cooler that provides very low temperatures.
Im using a 1080 monitor at 75hz
I tried the screen based FPS lock for 75 and used vertical sync ; the input lag was very noticeable and all 6 cores were still running at between 80 -90% of max and the GPU dropped to under 70% use.
This is with all video settings in game at low with just a few at medium.
What on earth are blizzard doing in the background of this game, mining bitcoins?!
What is the name of the rendering device (GPU) used by overwatch? You can check this if you go to video settings: the name of the device is a single-line text above the settings.
