How does matchmaking work?

as a new player I’m wondering how matchmaking works. Been playing about a week now and keep ending up against players that are ridicously high levels in comparason to myself. Can anybody enlighten me?

It makes your winrate around %50. You lose 20 games and then you win 20 games, you will get stomped alot and then you will probably fight hard to win that 20 games. If the system catches you win games more than you should, get ready for the get stomped action.

That doesnt seem to make much sense, why not just evenly match the games?

Just think about why you have been put against high level players. This has always been the issue about the matchmaking, force people to lose and force them to win according to your winrate.
We were able to see our win ratio before, it was always like 50.1, 49.9 etc. I think they removed it for some secret reason, they like hiding things from their customers

I still dont get why I’m being put in with level 300+ players after a week and not even able to play competitive. So thining about it doesnt really help tbh.

Its all about the money / Best regards Blizzard.

except that makes zero sense. If its about money you balance it then word of mouth spreads between new players so more buy it then spend on lootboxes. as it is now I’ve advised all my friends not to buy it as its so badly balanced its not worth thier time as you don’t get to learn the game except against bots which nobody buys an online multi player to do.

I always see this money argument on every game yet the things its mentioned against actually cause lost revenue.

They claim it is 50/50 but I dunno.

What they claim: they gather 12 players with similar SR then spread them to teams based on their MMR. For example the 2 players with highest MMR will face off against each other, etc until the two worst are separated. This is the closest to 50/50 they can achieve.

Reality: Almost every match is a complete stomp in either direction. What is worse after you get spawn camped in 2 games the next one you can troll and your team will win 5vs6. I don’t get it, this is as far away from the 50/50 as it gets.

just want to add that level doesn’t realy mean anything

the game is filled with smurfs and trolls so a low level can have verry high skill and a high level player could be a one trick troll.

that makes the matchmaker even more of a dungpile

well, I’ve actively told people not to buy this game due to the fact that I’m regularly going against stupidly high level and ability players after 1 week of play.

As for smurf accounts, I know they are everywhere these days but i’m personally against them and would love to see secondary accounts banned as again you just turn new and potential players away just to please people that just want to stomp low end players to feel good about yourself.

I’m not sure how this business model works to make a player base that will bring in new players and money, or are all gamie companies just thinking of a few year plan then we’ll just make a new game.

There’s a hidden algorithm that calculates a hidden MMR (MatchMaking Rating) value for you based on your performance and wins/losses. It’s kind of like your SR in competitive but much more complicated as it’s not just four numbers but something like a string of numbers. Then the system will try to find players with similar MMR from the same server (to avoid latency issues) and when the queue starts taking longer instead of finding players with similar MMR it tries to find players close to that MMR that together have about the same MMR on average.

If you queue with a group it will try to find a mirror match of your MMRs but as the queue takes longer it will prioritise finding a group with the same average MMR.

Also good to know: Getting points in the endgame cards actually effects your MMR in a very hardly noticeable way. It only effects notably your SR gain over a whole competitive season where not voting for yourself means that you’ll give up some very small amounts of SR

I am sorry you had to face those issues as soon as you got into the game. I bought it when it was released and it was really fun. Everyone was new to the game and even the balance issues did not seem bad. I am put in games with people about 3800-4200 SR, it seems everything is ok then some smurfs probably top500 get in and screws the whole balance with their tracer-genji op plays. We wrote in those forums over and over again, no one does anything. Things have been going the wrong direction for more than a year now.
In other games if we feel the teams are not balanced we change teams to balance it, as you can see you can’t do anything about it in OW. Getting stomped or stomp other teams is not fun, but OW is all about stomping.
Bringing new players to OW is only made by advertisement, they spend too much for it. But it is not going well either they sold 35 million first year and only 5 on second. It is going down fast. And those big cuts on prices came up, trying hard to get more players. You might be able to buy it for 5-10 dollars next year or so.

Well, its putting me off playing the game ever again as I like to play fair and balanced games. At least as much as possible which doesnt happen due to smurfs. BUt I’ve seen 3 star opponents against me and just get murdered instantly (not sure but heard these stars are for level 100) and as I’ve stated already, I’ve told my friends not to bother buying the gae as it’s so unbalanced and you wont get time to learn characters skills as your just scraping yourself of the floor every few seconds. Such a shame as I like the look of the game.

you’d need to have new players who will also have the same variables as you (nobody really knows how matchmaking works but latency is one factor) to be matched with them/against them
it’s a very rare sight (seen it two or 3 times) to see a team full of lvl 1-100s against a team full of bronze -or a mix silver/bronze- star players
usually it’s one lowbie on one team, none on the other…two lowbies on one team, one on the other…it’s not as tragic as you describe it and exp level does not mean skill…if you feel defeated just by seeing the meaningless stars it’s not matchmaking problem

Then you shouldn’t choose Blizzard.

I feel deafeated by going into the games and watching people who have a blantantly higher skill level than me or my team just wipe the floor with everybody then laugh at you. I understand that level does not always mean skill, I’ve played games long enough for that, but I also know the difference when I’m playing between a new player and somebody who has blatently been playing a long time and can run around a whole team wrecking the place and the newer players just giving up less than half way through a game.

when you see it 4 or 5 games in a row then see more stars it makes you dispirited in the whole process, thats not an issue with me (as you are clearly impyling, but are too scared to actually say) that is just plain human nature. you just switch back to a game where you know you stand a better chance of actually getting to play a game, rather than just dying. (for me counter strike which I know has it’s own issues before you make another veiled comment that is actually blatent) but is a game I know better and am more seasoned with.

4-5 games in a row? :joy::joy: dude, you may go on a 2 hour non stop losing streak, that’s like 25-30 games if you lose fast…
and if u have the patience to keep playing, then you will go on a 2 hour winning streak
you can probably change your luck by avoiding teammates you constantly getting matched with when you are on the losing streak…and to see how much star means nothing, i avoid silver star players everyday because many of them are horrifically bad
i don’t see how is my comment blatent?

you have used the passive agressive style to say that my problem is not matchmaking, but in my own head. It doesnt take a genius to see that.

again I take this back to being a new player and talking from that point of view, why would I bother going on a 2 hour losing streak when I can just switch games and play in a more competitive (for me) enviroment, or suggest anybody gets the game to go through the same thing?

i said IF
so it’s not accurate then? your morale can’t affect your game?

Nope, it just causes me to play counter strike instead. I’ve played games for long enough that I know that losing my temper, getting upset etc isn’t worth the hassle, so I’ll just switch games. Not only with overwatch, but any game that I play.
