Not because of their gameplay or kits… but because they are so stereo-typically “asian” and get biased treatment because of that.
Both characters are just flat asian stereotypes (something that every game has now… look at League of Legends, or SMITE or any game with characters that you can select, a lot of fighting games do it too).
These characters are always overpowered in rediculous ways. Seriously, how the hell is a BOW AND ARROW going to outdamage a Gatling gun from Orisa or a Shotgun from Roadhog. It makes ZERO logical sense, there was a REASON that the Japanese (Hanzo’s OWN people) abandoned obsolete weaponry in favour for Western firearms during the 19th Century. They were behind the rest of the world in technological development in almost EVERY way because of their isolationist policy.
To make matters worse, these characters ALWAYS presented as being obsessed with “honour” but the Japanese in World War II were some of the cruellest and committed the most dishonourable actions of the war. So why are they presented this way in Western designed games so much when the opposite is clearly true from history.
Overwatch wants to be seen as “progressive” (with Tracer being a lesbian for no logical reason) when actually, their “characters” are just simple stereotypes that bear no relevance in the modern world.
To make matters worse, both these characters are rarely touched, to appeal to Weebos and the Asian Market themselves. Because that worked out sooooooooo well for “The Last Jedi” which bombed in China because of the “token asian” in it.
Lets not even get started on how Overwatch treats my own people, the United Kingdom…

Think you are taking everything too personally and probably are best just not playing the game if it causes such a mad case of political correctness in you. It’s just a game, enjoy it or don’t.

I think its miseducating kids, a lot of players are kids about actual history and culture and I take exception to that. Its actually the OPPOSITE of “Political Correctness” which seeks to brush over or ignore the mistakes of minority cultures.

It’s just a fun game, not some historical epic. Plenty of adults play this game and don’t particularly care about whether it’s educational or not because it’s not necessary for it to be so, think you are making drama where there is none to be fair

If you are going to use actual real life cultures, then you should AT LEAST take the time to research each culture so they are accurately presented. It just shows that Blizzard “pretend” to be progressive when actually they don’t care about cultural accuracy.

You’re confusing asian stereotypes with the asian people in media stereotype. Also kids aren’t stupid my man they can see that asians aren’t all ninja’s.
When did they say that they were progressive ?

Man, I bet you’re a Skrewdriver fan …
There’s no honor in war, honor is only for tales and stories. Arguably, middle-age Japan had warrior caste that was all about honor. But, since we know those are all stories, and that honor only applies to people of the same social status or caste, you get a picture what kind of honor that was… Same as with medieval knights and chivalry … That’s why we have Hanzo/Genji talking about honor, but also Reinhardt(because knight/paladin, right?).
Companies do content that sells. Kids today like anime and that stuff, so that’s what companies give them.
This is a game and has to look/feel cool just like movies in the cinema. Most people have no clue about actual history and not even interested in it. They simply want some badass hero’s even if their abilities are fictional. What about McCree FTH? Someone at blizzard might have seen a few Clint Eastwood movies… But I have no problem with that. It’s a game.
You know, I never even considered their race if I’m honest, isn’t that weird?
I’ve played the game for almost a thousand hours and I’ve never once thought about stereotypes or racial profiling about any of the characters.
I get mad about the stereotyping of Zen, I mean c’mon, robot monk? So insensitive they are.
Yeah I think Torb is an accurate depiction of Sweden in WW2. Dude, chill a bit, entertainment and fiction doesn’t have to be historically or culturally accurate - it can be, but it doesn’t have to.
Are you questioning this things in a videogame based on a future that will never exists with magical dragons and a robot that have 6 mystical arms?
Talking about hero cultures, while mercy still hasn’t 1 single swiss voice line besides hoi zämmä which she says verry german like hoi zemme give her some swiss love
Well its not surprising I think as her voice actor is german, I believe. Nevertheles, I like her voice.
Sprechstunde bei der Frau Doktor
I understand what you are saying Diamond but i don’t really agree. Think about it this way. Im Russian and we have Zarya. Zarya is the opposite of what a Russian girl would be in Russia. If a woman like Zarya would walk the streets of Russia not only would she make no sense talking russian cause im sure they tried their best but her game lines are completely broken and the heavy russian accent is very stereotypical and not needed at all. Not to mention people in Russia are so homophobic that if they saw Zarya they would instantly call her a lesbian and if it was an actual person she would be stabbed or worse. Let’s put that aside the reason it doesn’t bother me at all is because first of all i don’t live or grew up in Russia and secondly i feel like if they made her an actual Russian lady which has long hair, big fake boobs(they are really into the body modification lately, and full make up and basically look like a very slutty(but high class slutty) lady that doesn’t speak any english at all(cause they don’t teach them very well over there when it comes to english) and her special ability is basically flirting and wearing short skirts… she would end up being dva out of the robot but without asian eyes. She needs to be the way she is because otherwise no one would even know she is russian without her the stereotypical voice and all the russian jokes without reading her background and as much as OW loves their stories this is an FPS online that most people don’t really care to read about.
Sooo… as annoying as it may be. Gengu and Hanzo are in a similar situation. How do you know their ethnicity simply by looking at them and listening to them speak. Instantly. Unfortunately stereotypes like “anime”(in this particular case) are the easiest way to show that. When you play them and look at their interactions and voice lines you instantly know where they come from. Same applies for Zarya. Some are more ambiguous but that is because their countries are less well known and don’t have as many stereotypes attached to them. Doomy for instance could have just been a well read person that happens to be black and speaks perfect english like lucio that just likes fighting on the side and has a bit of a temper but instead he has been connected to the “ebola” and “show me de wae” meme because he is so ugandan stereotypical what people think of african people when they look at him.
I don’t agree with this but from an artists point of view in a game where people are not immediately exposed to story and background unless they actually make an effort to do so this is a very effective method of showcasing their backgrounds.
So yeah im not for or against it i just understand why it is the way it is. They don’t actually know anything about these people they are portraying through these characters or where they come from they are just showcasing them as best as they can to be recognised for the places they supposedly grew up in.
When have you ever heard a British person speak like Tracer does? She sounds like an American take on Oliver Twist, how Americans demonise us.
It depends where you are. London, probably not. But somewhere like Cambridge or Oxford and you’ll hear those squeaky Harry Potteresque voices all over the place.
Reminds me of the first ~25 seconds of this video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=GTxBEiz85nU
we could say everyone being heterosexual is not realistic and nonsense reason
This sounds truly nazi to be honest.
