Is there a reason practice range isnt just hosted locally?

is there a reason for it being on a server? im getting tired of logging in and wanting to warm up a bit before queuing only to be met with a ME server for a solo lobby.

is it a security risk or what? thats kinda the only reason i can think for it not being hosted locally but im not a dev so I genuinely have no idea.

Yes. Saves hard drive space. (Especially important on Switch)

how so? the map is already installed, the assets aren’t being streamed.

even so, lets say it does save drive space, why not give people the option to host it locally?

The maps aren’t installed. They are all server side.

You could do that, but then it creates a whole load more options and variables to factor in and they have bigger fish to fry right now.

Seeing as they have almost finished OW2… but forgot about reworking half the heroes, so thats why it’s being pushed back a little.

The game engine is written in a client/server model. The server makes the final decision on what happens, the client just sends events to the server and tries to predict what will happen, until it gets the result from the server.

Hosting the training range locally would mean the server code would also have to run on your local machine, which Blizzard doesn’t want, because it would allow people to figure out how the server works in detail and theoretically provide stand alone servers outside of Blizzard’s control (which they really hate, you can read up upon their vendetta against the battlenet clone that allowed people to host their own SC tournaments).

Therefore, they don’t provide the server and the range has to be hosted by the official servers as well.

This is the biggest nonsense you ever wrote, which I have seen you done before in technical threads. Also super weird and inefficient in terms of game design. Almost all assets (including maps) are on your own PC. Where do you think that 20GB comes from? The only things the server is involved is green lighting abilities, green lighting hits, player position etc. Please don’t make such nonsense comments.

You should probsbly go through the files installed locally first.

i think it’s more so DRM thing.
they wouldn’t want people to be able to use their assets without purchasing the game.

but i don’t know i’m not a techy.
