Leaving is a problem in competitive

I feel that people leaving in competitive is a bit of a problem because when someone leaves and doesn’t join back it forces your team into a 4v5 situation and most likely you are going to lose that 4v5 game and that will result in a loss that was completely out of your control. So does anyone have ideas on how to make players not leave competitive games?

It’s easy to make changes to a Matchmaking, only blizzard doesn’t want to do that, they could make us no longer have smurfs, cheaters, they could do it but they don’t want to.

They are working on the cheaters but not allowing new accounts is counter intuitibe to their free to play model.

And when a highly skilled player makes a new account, they aren’t going to spend a long time in low elos anyway. 20-40 matches.
It’s highly unlikely that you cross paths with such a person more than twice unless you yourself are high plat or higher, which is where the new account would belong anyway.

The leaver penalties in comp are pretty dire after the first 3 i think.
I’ve never suffered any so i m not sure, but it’s something along 15 minutes, then some hours, a day, a week, a season.

If someone’s power cuts or there’s an irl emergency it’s a sad fact that a person leaves and won’t come back.

People have complained on these forums that if it takes longer than the allotted 1-2 minutes to get back into the game, they can’t join it anymore because of the served ban.

My two cents is that whatever ban is served for leaving should only start after the ongoing match is over, as that way the leaver would have a chance to return to the ongoing game regardless of if they will be punished or not.

There isn’t really any way to stop people from leaving, sadly. But perhaps there could be ways to mitigate the effect of a leaver on the losing team.
I’ve heard that at lesst in ow1 there was a system that gave a small sr boost to your next victory if your team had had a leaver.
I don’t know if that is still the case, but if it is it’s already a good first step to mitigate the loss.

There are plenty of ideas about how to deal with leaver games around here, but it’s a delicate balance to find a solution and implement it in a way that wouldn’t be immediately abused to artificially inflate ranks.
