You can get him for free if you get far enough in the battle pass.

That’s completely besides the point.
A competitive game is supposed to separate players based on their skill - NOT locking certain heroes behind pay-walls.
Every hero on release has always been ridiculously OP until they’ve had their first patch nerf in competitive… so you’re essentially giving paying players an advantage over the free to play players.
Thus…
NOT a competitive game.

Ultimately, no one playing Mauga in your games is going to be able to fully exploit his kit. You can take advantage of their knowledge gaps.
Mauga is also not that strong, and will be nerfed slightly before comp launch. So I really wouldn’t be worrying about it.
He is what the 6th OW2 hero?? Yeah, some have been strong… but you’ve never needed them. I’ve climbed consistently (slowly, but consistently), and basically never play the new heroes (I don’t find any of them interesting so far). I still pretty much only play Ball Rein and Ana, maybe a little Brig.
Mauga is virtually useless if you have a shield or another way to stop him from landing damage when he uses overdrive.
Also you can’t play him in comp before he’s gone through his first patch so no advantage on the competitive side.
The battle of beasts is a good place to practice him as he’s the only available tank to play. So this time we actually have a way to practice a new hero before we unlock him.
As long as you don’t dive mauga you’re fine against him. Heroes that self cleanse are also good.
Reaper works great against him if you time your fade for a little after you are set on fire.
And he’s a nice big target if you feel like playing around with junkrat. He’s a good choise in displacing him so he can’t utilize the overdrive and bastion just melts him in an instant.
Heroes at a distance are also pretty good. Especially ones with mobility. Echo and sojourn are good choises i think.
Sigma and dva are good choises to counter him as a tank (ramattra should work pretty okay too), and hog can survive against him pretty darn well.
Going against mauga on support though.
Out of everyone i’ve played against him so far, mercy, illari and brig work the worst. I haven’t tried lifeweaver against him properly yet.
Then again, the people i go against are not big on pro-strats and seamless teamwork so that might skew my opinion a tad.
It is amazing how many I am still seeing who just hold down both mouse buttons and hope… How have they not figured out how to shoot with him yet… lol
Honestly, if you’re close enough (like a winston jumping on you) you definitely want to use both buttons at that time.
Also when you use overdrive in a team brawl as every shot into a burning enemy is a crit and heals you.
Burning down shields is also a two gun job.
I still see people just activate overdrive and hide as they don’t know how the healing works. It’s a little sad, but they’ll learn with practise.
If its a big old tank… yeah. But I’d still use the one that sets them on fire first. Make sure you get those easy crit shots.
Yeah, this will be his downfall in most ranks. People tend not to plat grouped up, thus rendering a useful part of his kit pointless.
I think he is going to be mental in Open Queue though. Mauga, Hog, Brig, Lucio, Mei would be an dirty comp.
Agreed. That’s far too much upkeep for one team. An ana would be a must in the enemy team, and perhaps a good sniper to get the squishies.
Yeah. But if they go Ana, I’d change the Lucio for Kiri, or swap Mei for D.Va
If he’s “not that strong”, then why is he getting nerfed in the first place. 
As the OP said, it’s totally unfair for people that don’t purchase the BP. and for the other person saying you can get him without purchasing the BP, yes, yes you can, but it’ll take a while, whilst others can just buy him and crush you. Totally missing the point, and stating the obvious.

There are other tanks you can play, and with skill just beat. Hog dumpsters him. You play Hog.
Lifeweaver can completely nullify his ult, you play him.
So you personally have no issues.
As for him being in the BP… doesn’t matter. If the community cared there would be a lot more noise about it. Other than just 1 or 2 forum posts. Which says a lot, if only a tiny number of people here care about it… You are talking a microscopic portion of the community,
£8.59 or what ever it for DLC every 9 weeks (roughly £40 a year) is pretty decent for a “free” game (nothing is free). Ultimately if you don’t think the game is worth spending money on, that is your decision. But how much was Starfield… and that turned out to be garbage (just 1 example).

Not really since a very very small percentage of OW players don’t even use the forums, or care to use them. Like you said, a “microscopic” potion of the community post on the forums, whilst most don’t even look at them.

The game is “free to play”. That is it. You get access to the game for free. If you want it to be free… just don’t buy anything.
Me, I just buy the BP and that is it. I am happy to pay for my gaming if I am enjoying the game. (I don’t buy anything else, I think the skins are pointless).
Most people don’t use the forums, the forum users are far lower than that number of players on Steam… and Steam only accounts for around 1% of the player base.
I’d be curious to know the totally active forum users… I’d be surprised if it was more than a few hundred people.
Well, if they spoke up about it, maybe they’d force change. But it seems to be a model that is working quite well for them.

I can honestly say nothing you said was problematic or even confrontational…and I, as always, didn’t flag anything. So no idea.
Access is, given the new content in the last year, the game technically isn’t.
Yep. I enjoy the game and want to see it continue. So I am happy to contribute my small part to that. £40 a year for a game isnt an issue. People pay £60/70 for games multiple times a year.
