I’ve been having this for the past year or so now. It happens completely randomly, but consistently enough now that I’m receiving warnings about leaving matches early and penalties.
Overwatch resources were required by another process (even with every background application disabled, including AV)
Rendering device lost
Overwatch has crashed in display driver.
I have made sure all drivers are fully updated, I’ve tried fresh installs of both windows and OW, I’ve checked all the other steps listed in other threads.
I’ve tried fresh drivers and updates, older ones, no change.
I’ve tried on my old system and new system (only shared device is gpu - 1080ti) which is set to run stock.
I have never had a single crash in other games, even when running multiple other programs and background processes.
Why is it only OW that this is happening with?
It’s been frustrating enough over the time, but lately it has got worse and worse, I dare not even attempt to play comp - the crashes are bad enough in all other game modes, I’m not going to ruin other people’s SR because of something out of my control.

Hello Arca,
If you are getting a “Rendering Device Lost” error while playing, this usually indicates TDR (timeout detection and recovery) within Windows. This is a feature of Windows to detect response problems from GPU’s and resets the card if it does not receive a response after a period of time.
In this case, we recommend that you word through all of the troubleshooting in the article below.
If the issue persists, please upload your system files to [pastebin.com](http://pastebin.com/) and reply with the links to the files using the preformatted text option to encapsulate the links.
Rendering device lost is just one of many errors noted when crashing, again, OW is the only title I have ever had it happen with.
I had already seen all the different errors and tried all the steps listed:
- Set your components to factory default speeds to resolve crashes due to overclocking. (noted this in original post)
- Update your drivers to resolve any compatibility issues. (also noted in original post)
- Try closing background applications to resolve any software conflicts. (again, original post)
- If your computer locks up and becomes unresponsive, [check for overheating components]. (system doesn’t lock up, literally OW is only thing to crash)
- Missing or corrupted Windows® system files may cause this error. Use System File Checker to repair and replace system files. (Tried on new hardware, and with fresh installs of everything, as noted in original post)

DXDiag
Thanks for the update.
Looking over your files, there doesn’t seem to be anything that really stands out as a cause. However, I do have some steps for you to try.
Make sure that Windows Sysmain is set to automatically run :
- Press Windows Key + R.
- Type services.msc into the Run window.
- Click OK.
- In the Name column, locate and right-click Sysmain.
- Select Properties.
- Under the Startup Type dropdown menu, select Automatic.
- If Service Status does not show Running click the Start button
- Click OK.
Note: This will require a restart.
Next, check the settings for Overwatch in your NVIDIA Control Panel :
-
Open NVIDIA Control Panel
-
Go to “Manage 3D settings” > “Program settings” > “Overwatch”
-
Change the settings to the following
- Energy mode: Maximum performance
- Max. pre-rendered frames: 3
- Interlacing optimization: None
- V-sync: None
- Triple buffer: None
Lastly, reset your in-game options for Overwatch on the Battle.net app.
I had already attempted the Sysmain process, and that was all fine too.
As for the Nvidia control panel, I’ve gone through those now, although pre-rendered frames now appears to be replaced by Low latency mode (from what I can find) I’ve set this to ultra, and I can’t find any options named Interlacing optimization.
Are there any settings that may be those, but renamed?
Other than that, hopefully this helps out and the crashes stop, especially as you’ve now said nothing seems amiss!
Update:
Alas, nope, both “Rendering device lost” and “Overwatch has crashed in display driver” crashes again this evening.
I love the game, but this makes it completely unplayable

I keep having the same issue. Sometimes it says “Rendering device lost”. 90% of the time just a generic crash. No frame rate loss or other issues, just random and very frequent crashing. Even crashes on the Battle.net launcher. Have tried everything in this thread as well.

Welp, still getting the issues, and tonight it resulted in suspension when I tried playing ranked. Crashed 4 times in the same game, with the same crash in graphics driver.
Had it happen earlier while playing dps, updated graphics driver, tried again and yet more crashes. Still the only game it happens with…
Tried resetting all the in game options, then tried playing at 1080p medium graphics instead of 1440p ultra as I used to. No luck.
Will try my last placement as support to see what my final sr is, then goodbye OW and goodbye Blizz, as this is the last game I was left playing.
