Overwatch uses Microsoft Basic Render Driver

Hi all, hope to find a solution here -

Overwatch says that I am running on “Microsoft Basic Render Driver” instead of my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, and I used to be able to hit 120fps easy, but now I’m running on 7fps, and the game is literally unplayable.

Tried to:

  • Restart my laptop
  • Re-download Overwatch
  • Uninstall my NVIDIA drivers using DDU and reinstalling them via NVIDIA again
  • Ensured that my NVIDIA drivers are updated
  • Under my 3D-Settings for Overwatch it is set to High-Performance NVIDIA processor

Is there anything that I have not tried out? Or is my uninstallation incorrect or do I have to download the proper drivers from elsewhere?

Thanks for your help in advance

I don’t have an Nvidia gpu so Im not sure where you can find this but make sure the game is using your nvidia you instead of your Intel cpu. I’m pretty sure it’s in the Nvidia control panel.

The “Microsoft Basic Render Driver” is basically what Windows uses if no dedicated driver can be found for an installed video card.

I’ve mostly seen this occur in laptops with multiple video cards (usually a dedicated GPU and some on-board version) where no drivers for one of said video cards were installed. This would also fit the very low framerate you’ve seen - an on-board card is usually already somewhat lackluster in performance (at least when dealing with a visually complex game like Overwatch), and without proper drivers it’ll perform even worse.

You will want to reach out to the laptop manufacturer to see what they have to offer in terms of drivers - alternatively you can check on the website of the manufacturer of the motherboard, they’ll usually at least have reference drivers available.
