What’s the problem here? So Blizzard take tried and tested concepts and create very well made and polished versions of them. They aren’t innovators or risk takers. They take what’s already successful and slap a nice coat of paint on it. I don’t think anyone’s saying Blizzard make bad games, we’re just saying they don’t make new concepts. Heck, I’m sure Jeff would be the first to admit that WoW was basically a copy of Everquest.
Let’s see…
Heroes of the Storm = League of Legends = Classic Dota
Wow = Everquest
Overwatch = Team Fortress
Hearthstone = Magic: The Gathering
Warcraft = Dune
Diablo = D&D
Anyway, is this really worth throwing a hissy fit over?
PS - Can anyone find an example of the Hamster ball mechanics? As far as I can tell, that one is quite unique.
Marble Madness, dude!
Edit: and on a more serious note: if Blizzard didn’t add anything more than pretty graphics and nice controls, I’d agree calling their games copies, disregarding story etc. But most of the time they create the next generation of a genre, rather than polish it.
Warcraft took Dune 2 and added tech trees, dynamic fog of war, and actual economy. Oh, and multiplayer.
World of Warcraft took Everquest and added eh… too much to describe really, but it boils down to actual character progress
Diablo took the old hack’n slash and made classes actually be different, and also added procedural level generation that worked. And ok, what made Diablo huge was the look, feel and story.
Overwatch took TF2, added ultimates, tons of unique heroes, and balanced the whole thing for switching to counter.
So, i disagree with just adding polish

Sometimes the overwatch/paladins argument goes from fair comparison to “you clearly haven’t played one of these games”. While there are a few cross-overs with “generic” archetype heroes. The flow of the games are different. If you played Paladins like one does overwatch, you’d get stomped and vise versa
I haven’t played Marble Madness.
Warcraft definitely wasn’t the first game to use tech trees, fog of war, economy or multiplayer.
Diablo wasn’t the first game to use procedural level generation that worked. Frontier Elite did that and that game came on a single floppy.
Diablo takes all it’s ideas from existing games and D&D. It was originally going to be a turn based system even closer to D&D but they moved it into real time which also wasn’t a unique concept by any means.
WoW only added things taken from other sources. The lore, races and story all come from things like Lord of the Rings. A Paladin falling from grace and becoming evil? Neverwinter Nights did that and it came out a month before.
Overwatches hero mechanics all come from already existing games. Ana’s healing via shooting existed in Borderlands Roland. Mcree’s visual design is a fun one since it’s ripped straight from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. “Adding ultimates” isn’t original and neither is switching heroes.
You’ve only laid out a bunch of things that have been done countless times before. I’m obviously not going into great detail over this because we’d be here all day, but everything here has been done before. None of it is original.
PS - Oh, and on the narrative side of things… you know how we’re dealing with two generations of super heroes where the older one became disillusioned and broke the rules (Reaper) and then heroes became outlawed? Well that’s just the plot to The Watchmen. Heck, they even half stole the name from that one.
Then we’ve got the fight for robot rights thing which has been done so many times I don’t know where to begin. We’ve got Blade Runner and even the recent Detroit: Become Human.

You’re referring to a statement that is said when someone can’t properly word their ideas. If you can’t explain a concept to a child than you don’t fully understand that concept yourself.

Absolutely. However, if there are so many prerequisite skills you need to explain before you can explain the actual concept itself that it would take years, it’s not really practical, is it?
Do you think Stephen Hawking would have been able to explain his solution to the information paradox to a child, without spending decades tutoring that child on physics and mathematics? Even supposing he was willing and able to spend that time, do you think the child would play along, waiting 30 years before finally getting the explanation? I would say no, he couldn’t explain it to them, as it requires way too much experience. I would still say he fully understood it.
Better catch it.

You guys know that you can play a 1 to 1 copy of this game on roblox right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsoBVOonzYg
Just a random video but yeah you can see how easy and within fair use you can copy from a game.
Sad thing is the game might be balanced better on roblox
Oh noes, someone got huge inspiration from OW, they will get sued haha
By the way I just remembered tf sniper needs to hold on snipe mode for more charge, any resemblence?!? Why not do it like every game, zoom in and shoot. But nope, lets make it charge the more you hold, like tf.
Funny thread. Some people get that it’s just a light hearted discussion about game mechanics and then we’ve got others who took it dead serious and went straight to name calling and insults.
Overwatch forums everybody!
PS - Love Unreal Tournament
While you do have a point there, I think that Steven Hawking was very far down the list of people who could talk to children, solely due to his condition.
While I understand what you’re trying to say, game mechanics are far from complex and can easily be talked about to anyone over the age of 5 as the requirements to understand game mechanics aren’t that high.
This of course doesn’t mean that it’s simple and that people can adequately use that information but my point stands nonetheless.
This video makes me dizzy but its looks fun. Name game please?
With the number of things already invented, it’s hard to have something that’s not based on something else. Most of ideas were either present in books or other games. Most of new concepts are modifications of existing concepts.
