Packet Loss Topic (includes WinMTR and PathPing)

i am having some packet loss problems
these have been happening for 1-2 weeks now
it doesn’t happen every match so i had to restart the match a couple of times to make it occur again in order to do the tests
when it happens it won’t go away until the match ends

overwatch isn’t the only game that happens
it also occurs in WoW classic(mograine realm) as well
in WoW it usually appears after loading screens and forces me to alt-f4
it works normally after logging back in

sadly i don’t play many non-blizzard games so i’m not sure if it would also happen if i play some of thoose as well

i also recorded during this test idk if it helps or not but i will leave the link at the bottom for it as well

as much as i can tell recording didn’t affected the test
the way it occured was identical to the ones before that

Hi, OnionSama! o/

The tests don’t show anything too weird (although I’m wondering why the first 9 lines of the winMTR show a best time of 1 millisecond, meaning all those points are really close to you, and you are the information is not really moving towards our servers), and there’s no package loss (that would be the 100% column, and as you can see, there’s only a 1% in one line that may have been a blip, and then a 100% in another which means that that node is secured against these tests).

The fact that you mention it happens in specific games, and doesn’t stop happening until the next game or when you restart makes me think something may be going on on your computer. Can you try these troubleshooting steps? Also, it would be a good idea to review Windows’ host file, just in case.

With that, we can make sure that your computer is correctly connecting to your router and it’s not doing anything unusual.

If it keeps happening, could you get us 2 winMTRs? I would like to compare one when the issue is happening, and one when it isn’t.

i have already done all of thoose multiple times except updating my routers frimware but i can’t really find anything about it on my ISP’s site so i guess there are no updates (?)

tbh at this point i believe it might be the router(router/modem combined) so maybe i should just call my ISP and ask for another one

WinMTR tests

without the problem

edit: just realised there is a new update for my network card(killer E2500) that got released 5 days ago i’m updating that now (fingers crossed)

Hi again, OnionSama! o/

I was checking the winMTRs, and I think you posted the same twice? If not, the data is identical (which is quite unlikely to happen). I hope you are right and the update to the network card helps, but otherwise, could you double-check that you attached the correct results?

ah looks like i couldn’t copy the second results from the txt file i edited the post so u can compare them now

i just completed the update and got in game
tried reseting a custom game with bots 15 times and it haven’t occured yet

now i feel dumb for creating a topic for something so basic

i will send another reply if it occurs again

if it won’t
thanks for helping and sorry for wasting your time a bit :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi again! o/

First of all, there are no dumb questions. Dumb would be to not ask when you don’t know the answer

Again, let’s hope that it was just the network drivers, but in case it isn’t, here’s what I found. Looking at the two winMTRs now, there’s a 1% package loss that is appearing consistently starting on the Frankfurt nodes. It was already in the first results you posted, but I didn’t worry about it since it was in only one line, so it didn’t seem to spread (I thought it was a blip). But it’s in all the test you’ve posted, and in different lines too. This may indicate a problem in those nodes, but it’s inconsistent, so I don’t think it would affect you for a whole game.

Now, here’s the bad news. When you look at the differences between the winMTRs, you can see that line 11 is never the same. In the three tests you’ve posted, it was “if-ae-12-2…”, “if-ae-12-80…” and “if-ae-12-60…”. This means that when you try to connect to our servers, you don’t always follow the same path (although it’s always similar, as the other lines are consistent). Why is this bad? Because we can’t guarantee that the results of the tests we are seeing match the the path the game is following to connect to our servers at that time. If the issue happens only in one of the possible paths, that would both explain why it’s happening in specific games (the path shouldn’t change mid-game), and why the results are not showing much.

So, I’m going to teach you what you are looking for, and if you see the issue happens again, do a bunch of winMTR tests, and see if you can find this in one of them.

Basically, what you need to do is compare columns Best (best answer times), Avrg (average answer time) and Wrst (worst answer time). If you see that Best and Avrg are similar, that means that the connection to that node is relatively stable, and unless it’s absurdly high, you can ignore the Wrst column and go to the next line. If the Best and Avrg times differ significantly, then, check Wrst, and see if the difference between Best and Wrst is big. This would indicate that node is consistently having issues. If these differences are consistent from that line downwards, you’ve found the node having problems (and again, I’m going to bet that it’ll be around line 11). If you find this, you can contact your ISP and share with them the results about this and the name of the node with the issues, so they can have a look

Just as a heads up, if you check your results so far, you’ll notice that while you can see some issues in some particular nodes, these are not repeated when going further down, which usually means the issues are caused by security on those nodes (like for example the 100% package loss you can see in one of the lines).

looks like i was wrong
it happened again
i started a winMTR for the ip within ctrl+shift+n right away
so as i’m already posting a reply why not post the winMTR as well right ?

Hi again, OnionSama! o/

Sorry to hear that the issue is still happening :frowning:

At this point, I would try calling your ISP. The winMTR shows similar results to the previous ones (i.e., nothing terribly wrong. There’s a 2% package loss in a node, but what we can see in the video we should be seeing larger numbers). I’m pretty convinced that the issue is in one of the nodes around Frankfurt, but since the issue is not showing in the test, I can’t tell for sure :frowning:

i’m not sure if i’m doing something wrong by necroing this post but here we go

i have been trying the fix this problem since my last respond

i called my isp multiple times but they werent able to detect the problem

and i wasn’t able to capture anything big with winMTR’s either

last week i tried using my phones mobile internet instead,
connected my pc to it and tried to recreate the issue in custom games

and it actually happen again

i must point out that my phone services are also from the same company
both my home internet and mobile internet are from Turkcell

but seeing how both of them had the same problem
i started to think that the problem might be on my pc

i tried many stuff to solve the problem but none were successful

after all that i wanted to try using a vpn
and interestingly enough
i wasn’t able to recreate the problem
when i have vpn enabled its impossible for it to occur again it seems

ofc i’m not planning to play the game with vpn from now or anything it was only for test purposes and i only used it in a custom game full of bots

but even after all that the problem is still there when i’m not using the vpn which i would prefer not using while gaming

so after trying every single thing that came to my mind i had to come back to this post in hopes of finding the solution based on these new informations i was able to gather

sorry for bothering you once again
and thank you for all your help

I am using the same ISP as you do and can confirm the issue is still there. The game is literally unplayable right now.

then the problem is on our ISP’s side

the sad part is, it doesn’t matter how many times i called them, they never seem to be able to understand what the problem is

its getting really frustrating
