Please add server select so i can play with friends

as the title is, i from OCE want to play with a friend from SA, we should be getting american servers so the ping is around 200ms for us each but we are almost always getting korean servers and sometimes japanese servers
since my friend from SA gets 500ms on korean servers this is clearly unplayable and i cannot fathom why this happens or you blizzard think this is a good idea,
we should not each have to buy a VPN to get consistent and logical servers to play on
i just want the game to be playable when playing with friends (the point of playing overwatch tbh)
thank you

Edit; alternativly let us enable a ping range so we never got 500ms in servers… this is extremely easy to implement,
after thinking about this for a while i am almost certain this is now caused from the forced quick queue time matchmaking they have implemented, which is clearly flawed and sacrifices waiting 3-4 mins for a game in NA and would rather go to korea… with 500ms latency… the more i think about this the more i get annoyed

Its not as easy as it sounds…sorry to say it. If your on console you can reset where your country is without changing the language. If your not I dunno. Hoep it fixes itself for you!

i dont know how its hard to add a few lines of code that send data, check the response time then choose to either join or not join a server based on the ping
im pretty sure blizzard dont actually care but i made this thread to at least let them know this is effecting someone
but no i am on pc not console, thanks though

I am abit of a coder myself and it isnt as simple as a few lines of code. As much as i wish it was. I can go into the details but if you dont care about them you dont have to read them😁.

The code in the game sets your coutry and region from the IP of your device. Because the matchmaking system bases the teams off of the IP adresses that fit under a certain region. Changing that can cause more issues than it solves due to loops crashing/contridicting with eachother. It would require them to have there own sort of ‘VPN’ in game so your IP adress matches the server. That would be an expensive investment for a free to play game that would only impact a small amount of their player base. Which they will not spend money on that when they have ‘better things’ to invest in. Hope this helps

why does it give us asia games if neither of us are in asia region? we both get less ping to america. even since overwatch 1 oceania and south america have always been associated with americas region
i want to trust what you are saying is correct but it doesnt explain why the matchmaking is going out of its way to put us in a region neither of us belong in and BOTH have worse ping which completely contradicts what you have said
if any dev is reading itd be really cool to explain to me xd

Edit; if what youre saying IS true then they actually do have their own sort of VPN that puts us in asia region, which would logically makes sense with how i believe they are doing their best to get quick queue times by forcing games out of your region
so… this is an awful idea and makes the game unplayable and is a waste of resources…
please tell me there is a way to get in contact with a dev to fix this or even see if its truly the issue

I don’t excatly know why you are being sent to Asia’s servers since im not a dev and can’t go into the core game files as Im on Xbox, but! I have a feeling its to do with matchmaking errors that can occur when you try to play across regional servers. Since your both in different country servers it can often get confused and put you in a compeltely different one that is available(which is one of the errors i was talking about previously, probably didnt elaborate enough, sorry!)

As I said, Im not a dev. But I know a little bit about these kinds of things. If it turns out to be incorrect I am very sorry, there is always multiple ways to solve a problem/run a game. But based of off common sense and my knowledge in coding that is probably what is happening. In short, nothing can really be changed unless enough people make a complaint about it. At least you can play with your friend. You might just have to endure the high ping, as anoying as it is, for now.

Sadly, the only time non-content creators get to speak directly to game devs is at Blizzcon and other related events😥.

i understand ):
sadly 500ms is really unplayable, the game tends to just not work, shooting is literally half a second delayed and the match can end at 97% sometimes among one of the extremely broken issues
but i really do appreciate the help, thank you
