Portraits are a source of toxicity

Hello everyone,

I’d like to start by saying that I love the game, but some individuals make me enjoy it less and less.
I recently joined the gold portrait club, I kind of anticipated what would happen (kinda like when I joined the silver portrait club) but It’s even worse than what I thought.

What I’m asking for is the ability to choose the portrait we want to display, not the latest one we unlocked, because they are a source of harsh commentaries / insults from a lot of players towards people with higher levels (more time spent playing basically), and these toxic people are never punished when they get reported, and for the few who are, probably not harsh enough.

So we should either be able to protect ourselves from it by downgrading our portrait, or getting them punished as they should be (I almost never get the message that someone got punished when I connect, even though the amount of people reported for this kind of incident is quite big).

To put things back into context, when I got my silver portrait I was still in platinum. I got lots of toxicity until I reached diamond, when people didn’t use this as a source of insult/taunt as much (in ranked, but mostly in arcade mode 3v3 / 1v1 / 4v4 …) .
Then they released the private profiles, which was so beneficial to reduce the amount of toxicity I receive in arcade mode, and also because the amount of people getting a silver portrait increasing overtime, I was more and more like any other player.

However, that changed a week ago when I got my gold portrait, and I’m actually considering just buying an other account to get rid of this newly found toxicity.
Since I have this gold portrait, I can’t play 3 games in arcade without one of them having to receive the commentary of a toxic player speaking about my gold border.
MAKE IT STOP.

Ranked is way less toxic for me, maybe because in master people tend less to speak about the game levels, but quickplay, and especially arcade is just a nightmare now.
I can’t even imagine how it would be if I ever get a platinum portrait.

Lots of things have been released to reduce / remove the ability to be toxic towards specific people, like with the private profiles, now you should give us the option to make our portrait generic. When I agree that having new shiny portraits after lots of hours invested into the game is cool, I’d rather have the one I had to start with to prevent getting insulted.

Thanks for reading my message.

TL;DR :
Silver/Gold portrait = toxicity towards you.
Therefore, allow us to choose the portrait we use OR punish the people reported accordingly.

Given the fact that we already can make our profiles private, I would have no problem if we can hide our lvl, too. But this opinion comes from a person who doesn’t care about your level in the first place.

I can’t say that I’ve ever seen someone being insulted over their portrait, so this seems sketch at best.

I’m gonna assume that you still have a bronze portrait then. I’m pretty sure anyone with a silver portrait (in other words who played a lot) would say that they’ve received / have seen other people with high level portraits getting harassed over this very reason.

I admit that I probably should have used the word harassment instead of insults, it would have been more accurate.

However the problem is still there, don’t just say that what I’m saying is sketchy / false if you’ve never been in the conditions to actually verify what you’re saying.

Remove all information in relation to who our teammates are and how they are doing. Then remove medals. Then remove stats because lol 50 eliminations, they are a source of toxicity. Make us play completely blind.

I have played since the game came out and I haven’t seen this once, once again seems sketch.

Might as well remove levels, seeing what your team is playing, the frag count in the right counter, players names, the tab option.
Satire aside, I vote for a no on this, people have expectations and level doesn’t matter when it comes meeting it, showing skill or being a good teammate.
I think that this game needs to show more info then lowering or faking it.
Have yet to see someone shame protates for “being to high” more so people with x2 the(lower) level of most teammates in the team might get a little harassment but that’s about it and that’s kinda the matchmaking systems problem.
(not sure this why this was a reply to you, more so @ the topic my bad xD)

I usually only heard those a lot back in low elo, where ppl blame others for beeing lvl 1400 but still silver.

How do you get harassment in master?
Do they bring up the: #nolife?

Personally I never got insulted by the lvl, yes i saw others getting flamed. But very rarely.

What I hate the most are players using those hiding functions AND harass others.

Personally i would like strong punishments for players insulting others especially about sr/skill/gameplay when they have it private.

You can’t hate something and use it too.
Not meant to be directed to the op, more to those players insulting others.

Yes, in ranked I have almost never got / seen harassment over this matter since my climb to master (I still got some in diamond but, really rarely).

That’s why I was saying in the original post that it is in quickplay and especially in arcade that I’m getting this kind of harassment.

And as you mentioned, I have the feeling that a lot of the people harassing others get away with it with nothing that would make them stop doing it.

I’ve had a silver portrait (close to gold) for quite some time and not once have I had people flaming me for it.

Portraits don’t mean your level of skill nor how toxic it could get.

Your acclaim is biased because toxic people are just toxic without the need to look at your portrait. You are making it look that the colour of it matters when in fact it doesn’t.

You have two options:

a) Ignore/mute them
b) Report them for being toxic

Don’t make this little detail to be the reason why some people might be toxic towards you. There are many other factors that someone coincidentally is getting toxic to you beyond that.

Your argument was also used when profiles were all public against people asking to make them private, and indeed, allowing to make them private improved the situation.

Toxic people are toxic I agree, and yet we should not let things the way they are if portrait are what toxic people use to harass people.

I know I can ignore and mute them, and I use it when it just becomes too annoying, but the result is there : the harm has already been done, the fun is gone.

And as to report them for being toxic, I do it, and yet when I connect the day after, nothing happened.

No. Since portraits show the time you have played, the toxicity becomes the form of:
“Gold portrait still gold lul”

Even with private profiles it might be “Wow gold portrait you must have no life”.

I personally don’t care and think that everyone should have open profiles still.

ps. I have gold portrait and closing in on the plat portrait in a few levels. I still think that private profiles was the stupidest addition to OW since its inception. Even worse than Brig.

In my little CTF group I had back in the day we’d laugh at this guy coss he had a silver border.

Now I have gold border and 13 golden guns unlocked. What I do with my life??

Fragile little modern gamer egos…

Thats a very bold claim. To find worse things than Brigitte you gotta dig deeper, way deeper, like decades into gaming.
