PS4 Pro. The problem has prevented me from playing for over a week now: every time I try to join a game, as soon as a game has been found, it says “Applying Update”, then “Disconnected from game server HF-504”, then “Error applying update, unknown error, HF-5”.
Game mode apparently does not matter. Happens always.
I don’t know how to fix this but I’d reccomend trying this (from a blizzard support guide):
- If you’re using a wireless connection, optimize your internet connection to rule out a connection issue.
- Check your network configuration to find any issues with your firewall, router, or port settings.
- Reset your network devices to make sure your router hasn’t become flooded with data.
- Run your console’s built-in connection test (PlayStation 4) (Xbox One) (Nintendo Switch).
- Select Show Network Stats from the Options > Video menu to view connection information. Our Diagnosing Overwatch Network Problems article defines each stat with possible troubleshooting steps.
- Use your console’s internet browser (if it has one) to run a Looking Glass test. This will help determine if the problem is between your console and our servers.
If nothing works try contacting Blizzard support as they are very knowledgeable and quite quick to respond (usually less than 24 hours). I’d filter it down to technical and then console
