Random EXTREME mouse input lag, smoothing and overshooting

Specs:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
  • 16GB DDR4 @ 1584MHz
  • AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT (drivers up to date)

Since the latest Season 17 patch, at completely random intervals, my mouse input seemingly fails for around 30 seconds. Whenever I move the mouse, the input happens ~1 second later, is smoothed, accelerated and overshoots. If you’ve played Minecraft and have used the ‘smooth camera’ feature - it’s exactly like this.

Whilst this is happening, all game menus including the interaction menu are incredibly laggy and cause the game to stutter. The issue rectifies itself after around 30 seconds. GPU, CPU and RAM utilisation sees no difference whilst the issue is occuring and this issue only happens in Overwatch 2 after the Season 17 patch.

I can confirm that ‘enhance pointer precision’ is OFF in Windows and Raw Input is ON in-game.

Steps already taken in attempts to resolve the issue:

  • Changed full screen type (borderless/full screen/windows) - No change
  • Tabbing out and back in (no change)
  • Different mouse (no change)
  • Scan and repair game files (no change)
  • Closing background applications (no change)
  • Using only one monitor (no change)
  • Updated Windows (no change)
  • Running game as adminstrator (no change)
  • Reinstalling the game completely (no change)
  • Switching from DX11 to DX12 (no change)
  • Reflashing mouse firmwire (no change)
  • Using mouse in wired mode (no change)
  • Completely nuking my display drivers with DDU and reinstalling them
  • Disabling full screen optimisations on Windows
  • Disabling hardware-accelerated gpu scheduling

This thread is quite literally my last hope.

I opened a ticket regarding this, got an automated response telling me how to deal with network issues and then the ticket got closed. I reopened the ticket, got another automated response telling me to do all the troubleshooting steps I’d already outlined and that I should ‘contact a tecnnician’ and then the ticket was permanently closed.

I opened another ticket, got an automated response again, then finally got through to an actual human who actually took the time to give me some other troubleshooting tips. I responded telling him that these tips hadn’t worked, then another game master came in and closed the ticket, telling me to post on the forum (which I’d already done) so the ‘right people’ can see it - as if anyone here is going to care about a very niche issue seemingly only I am having with the game.

Please, if anyone knows how I could possibly get this fixed, please let me know.

What mouse are you using.

Mouse pad fabric or hard

??

XM2we. Happens both in wireless and wired mode. It isn’t an issue with the mouse itself - this only happens in Overwatch 2 after the latest update.

Wasn’t that the mouse where you could adjust the debounce settings to fix input lag issues.

Might be wrong. But worth checking out.

I don’t believe so - I can’t seem to find anyone else expereincing input lag with the mouse specifically in Overwatch. Have checked with the guys at Endgame Gear and they’re not aware of that being an issue either.

Either way, I’ve played around with the debounce setting and this has not helped unfortunately.

Again, I’ve also tried a different mouse to no avail.

Stupid suggestion, as I didn’t see it in your list.

Different usb port, different cables.

Worth a shot.

No difference sadly :frowning:

Balls.
Have you tried the mouse and such on a different pc??

Yeah, completely fine - it seems to be an issue specifically on my PC only. I think I’ve tried possibly every single troubleshooting issue.

So I’ve gone through with a friend who’s my companies IT guy.

He says, because it’s only happening on your pc. That would immediate rule out the mouse or the game being the issue.

His suggestions…

  • task manager… Check there’s nothing hogging CPU, disk or memory when you’re playing OW
  • also try USB power management. There’s a setting under power management, uncheck “allow this computer to turn off this device to save power”. That will stop windows from throttling usb devices.

Few other things he suggested like he polling rate and and mouse acceleration settings, but start there. See what happens.

Hey,

Thanks for this! I can confirm that there’s nothing odd running. I’m pretty selective about what I install and have been monitoring it constantly - nothing out of the ordinary.

I’ve just tried the USB power management setting as well, and this hasn’t made a difference either :frowning:

I’ve gone through all the polling rate settings and mouse acceleration settings and have even had support from the manufacturer of the mouse who have also ruled out the mouse being the issue.

I’m not sure we can completely rule out the game just yet - it may be how it interacts with my specific hardware setup. Again, this only started occurring after the Season 17 patch and does not affect any other game whatsoever.

He mentioned one thing that’s windows side, but to do with blizzard games in general… Let me find what he said and copy paste it…

Right-click Overwatch Launcher.exe → Properties → Compatibility tab → check “Disable fullscreen optimizations.” This often helps with input lag in Blizzard games.

Worth a shot.

Hey! Thanks again for responding. Have already tried this too!

Interestingly, two other people have come forward with the same issue. I posted this same thread on the US forum and someone has commented having the exact same problem.

I also posted this to /r/Overwatch and somebody on there is also experiencing this issue - so it’s got to be game-related!
