I can see both sides. Winston’s name is just that; Wintson. He doesn’t have a codename really cause that is his name. Considering Hammond came from the same place, it might be easier for him to be called Hammond. But he did come to this own in Junkertown under the guise of Wrecking Ball. It’s his character.
I think people are making too big of a deal. Blizzard created this character and while fans have opinions or even wants, its their choice with what to do with him in the end. Fans can give feedback, but Bliz decides. If they stick with Wrecking Ball, I’m fine with that. If enough people annoy them into changing it to Hammond and keeping the Wrecking Ball namesake to his junkertown mech battle origins, I don’t care. I’ll probably call him Hammond myself, but I’m not gonna rag on Bliz.
So far I haven’t seen anyone saying that Wrecking Ball is good choice of name, but many defended the logic why the name was picked - correct!
Let me remind you that it was Overwatch Team who leaked name Hammond some time ago. People just got familiar with it.

The reason D.Va is not known as Hana is because D.Va is her online name as a pro gaming. This is unlike “Wrecking Ball” (Hammond) where they are calling him by the suit. It would be like calling D.Va “MEKA”

No, they call Hammond “Wrecking ball”, not because the suit, but because it’s his Battlename/Nickname in Junkertown.
Just like Hana is known as D.Va in the universe’s online community, hammond is known as Wreckingball in the junker community.
