I think Wrecking Ball is ok as a nickname explained in lore. But everybody calls it Hammond anyway.
It’s like calling DVA: The Mech or Winston: The Jumpsuit

I agree, it seems a little clunky and absolutely no one calls him wrecking ball, nicknames work for like Junkrat when it’s short and easy but not if it’s so much longer than their name lol
Here we go again. Let’s rename D.Va to Hana then, Reaper to Gabriel, Mercy to Angela, Doomfist to Akande, Symmetra to Satya, Roadhog to Mako, Junkrat to Jamison, Soldier to Jack, etc.
You’ve got a point and you’re not wrong. But it doesn’t goes against the convention. Genji, Hanzo, Moira, Brigitte still have their names right?
It’s just personal preference I guess, but Wrecking Ball doesn’t work for me but Hammond does.
I know where you’re coming from, wrecking ball doesn’t sound original. However we haven’t really seen his story yet so I think we should still wait a bit and see.
I think the point is non-sequitur you are trying to make. Those names are not clunky and roll off the tongue easily. OTOH, “Wrecking Ball” sounds off and lacks the charm of Hammond or Winston for instance.
That being said, I don’t think Blizzard’s pride will allow them to change it despite the fact the community majority clearly prefers “Hammond” and I suspect think it sets up a dual-identity mech+hamster they want to foster in people’s minds.
You’re getting the wrong idea.
Wrecking Ball is what Hammond is known as by the rest of the roster. Why is it such a big deal for him to be called this in the game? We still know D.VA as D.VA even though we know her name is Hana. It works the same way.
Because forums like to nitpick over the details. I laughed at the name Doomfist and thought the name was silly, much like wrecking ball. Still it didn’t bother me since doomfist has a powerful gauntlet and wrecking ball is literately a wrecking ball when tethered.
You have to remember that you are allowed to “break rules”.
Wrecking Ball is not a name that rolls off the tongue easily yet you can break the rule of “good names” because considering who Hammond is in the Overwatch universe and in general.
“Wrecking Ball” is his battle name, just like D.Va, Soldier 76, Reaper, Sombra, etc. He is known especially in Junkertown, where names are already funky. (Junkrat, Roadhog)
And the most important thing about Wrecking Ball is the fact that he’s a joke character.
He’s a hamster… using a robotic hamster ball… with machine guns…
The character itself is a joke and thus his name can be a joke, too, regardless wether the name sounds nice or not.
If they call them Hammond instead of Wrecking Ball, he would sound more serious which would break the concept of a joke character.
Also, it doesn’t matter which name he has in-game because players will find another name to refer to him quickly, just like for Brigitte (Brig), Widowmaker (Widow), etc.
I agree, it’s such a cumbersome for someone we already knew as Hammond for the longest time.
I don’t care if it’s his nom de guerre… he’s Hammond.
I imagine all of the callouts amongst pros will be Hammond or Hamster.
So let’s do away with Wrecking Ball name at this stage.
I dont agree and if you have a problem with it being too long just shorting it to wreckin in comms wrecking ball was a name that the queen possibly came up with when he met with him by the time he landed in junkertown. You cant change whats been made to the lore and theory here they planned to name him that so he can be next to winston next to the hero gallery. You guys aggrivated blizzard so much that now you guys wont be able to play the ptr also you wont be able to give ptr feedback any longer so they took both things down thanks to you making a fuss over nothing. I hope ptr feedback will never come back cause I agree with blizzard here what feed back you guys give is nothing about game play its just making a fuss over the name.
Eh dont bother blizzard realized the people who where testing in the ptr arent reliable people and is now deciding its a staff only thing they made it that customers shouldnt join ptr. Decided it should be a staff only thing and they decided to remove the ptr feedback from the forums because its filled with unreasonably people and people that dont know anything about tactics.
What about Reinhardt or Roadhog…
Reinhardt is his real name (Reinhardt Wilhelm)
Roadhog, on the other hand is his nickname and everyone knows him with that name. His real name is Mako Rutledge.
The point is, the name selection isn’t based on player preferences but rather on the game lore.
This is why Wrecking Ball is called Wrecking Ball, because everyone in the Overwatch univers knows Hammond as Wrecking Ball.
Pretty sure ‘Wrecking ball’ was the name he used in Junkertown. It’s in his lore, so they’re going to use it.
Even though ‘Wrecking Ball’ isn’t in the game yet, only PTR so not everyone knows the hero as that name. There’s not much of a ‘game lore’ on Overwatch as it’s basically a first person shooter.
Although I would prefer the name to be Hammond, I just don’t see what all the fuss is about, it’s just a name, it doesn’t affect gameplay.
In the end, people will call them how they want anyway.
I wonder what kinds of short names Hammond gets by comp players.
Maybe Ham or Ball…
Ill just go with “Ball.”
We’ve been calling Hammond “Hammond” for about a year now. Its ingrained in our mind, we look at Hammond and immediately say “Hammond.”
Not sure why they insist on calling him “Wrecking Ball”. I still see a hamster ball on a string…
