Rendering device has been lost

At least somebody who thinks he gets the crashes again.
Glad to hear you’re smart enough.
Hopefully nvidia / blizzard fix this.

No issues at all with the gtx 10series.

Any updates? I’ve tried all of these suggestions and even RMA’d my RTX 2080 Ti FE as a last resort but I still get the “Your rendering device has been lost! Application closing!” crash 1-3 times per play session.

Most recently it’s resulted in 2 suspensions from Competitive CTF because it makes it look like I left the game.

I’ve tried the Nvidia Control Panel “Manage 3D settings” option, the Debug Mode option, I’ve replaced my motherboard once, my RAM twice, and even put the RTX 2080 Ti in another computer and I still get the crashes no matter which rig has this GPU in it.

sounds odd, i know but you need to disable turbo mode on your CPU (yes Cpu). You can do that in throttlestop or simply by going to the windows enegery options and put max CPU state to 99% (it will prevent he CPU to go into Turbo Boost Mode).

Give it a try. I tried everything, in all forums, all videos i found…nothing help until I did this. Many hundrets of hours without a crash since then.

Thanks, kEraMiK I’ll give that a try.

I also have a support ticket with Nvidia that’s been going since mid-November and they just escalated it to their level-2 team. I’ll be sure to reply to all these threads across the different sites if they find an actual fix.

Thanks for everyone’s efforts and input thus far

Nvidia RTX2070 here.

“rendering device has been lost” error randomly after playing 5-20min.
Sometimes no issues for hours. GPU heat stays at sensible levels (55-65 c) so it should not be the issue.

Not very fun.

Hello,

I run a 2080 and have the same problem.

The “cannot render device” error as started since I purchased the 2080.

I am qualified above a ‘local technician’.

The machine I am running on is sound and has no issues.

There is clearly some issue with the new RTX cards running Overwatch. Possibly this is NVida’s responsibility, regardless people may choose not to play Overwatch based on this as the crashing gives you bans, the last ban I received was 20 hours, which is just not cool.

Essentially I can accept the crashes, just not the stacking bans.

Since this is a specific crash error (which I am sure you collect data on), in the case of this error code the bans should not be placed.

Good job on contacting NVidia, lets hope Blizzard and Overwatch get in touch regarding this matter

This happens quite frequently on my Titan X (Pascal). I’m not really interested in getting to the root cause as I can usually re-launch the game and be back within 30 seconds or so. It’s annoying, but I don’t really want to figure out why Overwatch can’t handle this situation without throwing an exception.

However, now I’m getting suspensions because Overwatch crashes? That’s not right.

Consider this from a customer service point of view. I’m upset because my game is crashing repeatedly. I re-launch the game and now I’ve been punished for something that isn’t my fault and I likely have no control over. Then I head to the forums to see that this is a known issue that happens to some percentage of the player base.

That’s a really bad experience, Blizzard. Now I’m going to go play Apex. Is that really the best outcome for your player base?

Is there any dialog between Blizzard and Nvidia on this issue? I understand that perhaps this is a recurring issue between Windows and the graphics driver, but Overwatch is the only game that consistently crashes. I’ve had this same hardware configuration for many years and this behavior is new as of this fall.

Perhaps it’s an issue with the latest line of Nvidia drivers? The bit about AMD Ryzen processors might be useful, but I’m running an Intel 6700k, so it’s not applicable to me.

At this point, I’d settle for a relaxed suspension policy. As it stands, I’m just not going to play Overwatch, and that’s unfortunate for everyone.

I am using a rtx 2080 running everything on stock and I’m getting this crash every couple hours or so…

I’ve been having the same issue, both on my old 980 ti and not on my 2080 ti. No OC or anything.

But, I haven’t had a single crash for 2 whole days after I unchecked the

Use browser hardware acceleration when available” in the Settings of the Blizzard Launcher.

I noticed the for me anyway, the launcher always froze as well when the game crashed.

Hopefully, it will help at least someone. (If you use Mozilla as your browser, make sure you do the same to your browser if you have it running while gaming." In Chrome it’s unchecked by default.

EDIT:
I take that back. I just crashed after probably 30 games or so. Short lived happiness. Unchecked HW acceleration didn’t do the trick sadly enough.

Pissing me off that I keep getting punished for this frecking bug.

Ever get this fixed, my friend has the exact GPU and has this issue.

Hello,

It appears that I am having the same issue. I was to a point that the person who built it for me via what specs I asked for (my laptop was dying and I had no choice but to get one as fast as I could because I had a term paper due, so I didn’t have the time to build it myself, as much as I wanted to) I thought was to blame (I paid the person quite well for it, as that is his business). This is getting out of hand, Blizzard. This is officially 5 months and it’s not yet fixed. That’s a BIG problem, and it’s continuing to look as though your userbase is meaning less and less to you- you’ve lost what Blizzard was and have become the corporate monster that Activision is. Please. There HAS to be something still in there of the old Blizzard team- the ones that actually care about their players and what is going on in their games. I can understand a month or two, but this has gone on far too long.

You’re losing your player-base for a reason, and this is it, sadly.

Please, for the sake of those who still love what you used to stand for and KNOW some of those people who still stand for those things still work there, fix these glaring problems,

-A once loyal Blizzard fan (who wants to continue to be, but wonders if it is time to let the company that I once loved go, as it looks to have sold its very soul to corportate overlords obsessed with profit and not the lasting and impacting gamer experience)

Having the same issue. CPU 9700k, GPU 2080ti. Not overclocked. Temperatures are well within normal range.

rtx 2070, i have the same issue. it’s a new computer that i built.

I just wanted to pipe in here. I build a brand new computer on Friday with a AMD 7 1700x and a GeoForce GTX 1070. Had the rendering issue every couple of games, tried all the fixes in this post and nothing.

What Fixed It For Me
Ran a Hardware Diagnostics and found my memory to be dying, but not quiet there yet. I ran the built in Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool in Windows 10 and it found hardware errors. I swapped out the RAM and bam, no more issues.

2080 same issue, fix your s*** blizzard!

RTX 2060 Gigabyte Windforce OC 6G. Still the same Problem.
Blizzard, pls fix it. You suck on balancing and matchmaking, so pls don’t suck on RTX-cards too.
This problem has cost me 200 SR and ca. 3h fun with my friend because i was suspended many times.
I dont want a compensation for the lost time or the lost 200 SR.
I just want Overwatch gets balanced and you, Blizzard, get the problem fixed.
pls

Okay guys I have had this issue ever since I upgraded the drivers on my 1080ti back in December. It affected a lot of my other games as well where I would get a direct x error. I downloaded MSI Afterburner and turned down my core clock. Now this sounds stupid since it always worked normally before, but I sh*t you not I have not had this issue anymore. Try it out and see if it helps you too

This should be a known issue by now… happens to multiple people on different setups. Fix it maybe? I have had this problem for months and can barely play the game. “local technician” says everything is fine. must be overwatch.

EDIT: switched GPU, same problem. switched CPU, same problem. Reinstall windows/overwatch, SAME PROBLEM.

EDIT 2: also the problem has costed me numerous comp games and i have recieved a suspension.
