Should Symmetra and Torbjörn be support heroes?

actually, yes. i think one way to make 222 at least enjoyable would be to make support and tanks more diverse, so either having the old “defense” category back or adding some dps to the healer tank.
another way could be divide tanks, support and dps into subcategories, like “bruiser” and “protector” for tanks, “fighter” and “disruptor” for dps and “healer” and “defender” for support.
Healers are healers, neither Torb or the trashcan are supports, trashcan especially has always been DPS, even when she was in the support category.
We don’t need DPS in the support category just because DPS don’t want to play anything else.
I mean sure. If you want the Torb that normally does over 35% of teams whole damage in the support role I’d be glad to have instant queues.

only hero i think could be reworked into another role would be mei who could be reworked into the tank role…
I mean she can block stuff and she basically takes space by posing as a threat up close by freezing people pretty fast… she can also give cover to allies and ironically enemies in her frozen form… she can sabotage the enemy splitting their forces a bit like wrecking ball and body block and protect a bit like Zarya… so arguably if anyone could fit in another role i think it would be mei…
the advantage of reworking her for a tank slot would be that hey you would have one less dps hero and one more tank hero meaning it would do double the efect in brining balance ot the hero selection…
because their initial game design accidentally landed us with way to many dps heros…
problem is, until blizzard makes tanks and healers as appealing as dps we are going to have HUGE problems with role lock. i don’t mind playing tanks and i’m a main healer but, after playing more games, i found myself actually getting frustrated because tanks and healers are incredibly low impact if the dps don’t deliver so i’m essentially a sitting duck waiting for either the enemy to kill me or the dps to wake up and do his job.
tank and supports NEED something more than “hold down a button and let soldier do everything”. they took out our ability to flex after spending 4 years bashing our heads about “not being a one trick because those are bad”.
The idea of giving a free lootbox or credits for playing a certain role is no more than a placebo, unless they make the roles more interesting people will not play tank or support much longer.
And if that happens the only way to make queue times shorter will be implementing a fill-in mechanic that puts you in either tnk or support in order for matches to start sooner, and that would end up in more people dodging.
They acted on impulse on this one and it shows. they discarded all criticism, like the longer wait times for dps, actually daring to suggest people to GROUP UP to avoid waiting that long. Are they kidding us? you know what would have been solved by “grouping up”? THE 5 DPS META.
This was always going to be a problem given the ratio between dps and tank/support anyway. With around 3/1 more DPS, it’s no surprise there’s more DPS players cramming for those two slots.
7 supports and 8 tanks yet tanks are played a good deal less. I don’t think the number of characters in a class is that important.
that’s exactly why they should revert some of the changes they made in the past. Remember when sombra, hanzo, widow, mei, junkrat and torbjorn where in the defense class? shifting some of the dps back into other classes would have a somewhat positive effect as those who main those heroes won’t have to select dps to play them.
now that i think of it, everyone here has been whining about role lock (me included) and either gave no alternative or said to revert it/ change it (like me when i said to modify role lock so that you are allowed to choose 2 classes and switch in those two at will).
Yet, nobody (that i know of) actually tried to address another aspect ofthis thing:
what if we change the CLASSES? and by that i mean change how they work, instead of having 3 “lines” one after another, we should have somewhat of a triangle…ok that sounds stupid. picture this: you know those pictures where someone puts 3 characters at the verges of a triangle, then makes a fusion of 2 of those characters on each side and a fusion of all 3 of them in the middle? (dunno how they are called, i saw them some time ago on deviantart and facebook). well, let’s make that but for CLASSES.
we already have a tank/dps hybryd class: BRUISERS. so, the idea would be to shift those characters in these 3 hybryd classes slot one for dps/tank for mei, roadhog, zarya, junkrat and basically any dps that has some CC in their kit, one for dps that can also heal, like moira and one for healer that can also tank, like brig (of course they would need to be tuned and changed for the occasion) and make the rule like this: you STILL choose the role BUT you can pick ANY hero from your main role (tank, dps or healer) PLUS any hero from the HYBRYD roles so if you picked tank you could either go full tank or pick roadhog or junkrat (that would be reclassed as the old defense for example) or even pick brig (as she would be in the tank/heal hybryd group).

Impossible. Blizzard tried a similar thing in Heroes of the Storm and it faced a backlash. If anything the role lock means new heroes will be tailor-made for their roles and old heroes will be changed to fit their roles more closely. Balancing everything from the ground-up is a pipe dream considering the company which made this game cant even balance a single character(Brigitte) without resorting to gameplay restrictions.
They should rework the roles like Heroes of the Storm and add Support and Healer! for example in hots the Medivh its not dps, neither a healer… he supports his team with shields… and stuffs…
true, they make these heroes that look so cool on paper but are nightmares to balance, at this point, since they stated “group up to avoid long quques” they might as well revert the role lock and say “group up to not have 5 dps in a team”
Blizzard originally stated in interviews when the game first came out that the support category wasn’t supposed to be limited to only healers. It was supposed to be full of utility characters that didn’t deal a lot of damage but had unique abilities that supported the team strategically. Torbjorn and Symmetra were Support characters during the games initial development before public release. Healing was never suppose to be as heavy of a skill factor as it is today in the support category. I think it became this way because the Overwatch community wanted more healers added to the game that required more skill than Mercy to play. JMO Torb in the present game, is not the same damage dealer he was after his skill changes. His present skillset makes him weaker overall. Symmetra’s current skillset is only dangerous because they upped the damage it deals. They both still play very defensively and mainly are supportive strategic picks. Without their “lock-on” turrets, they can’t last in a fight against a main DPS damage dealer.
