Is overwatch 2 its own game or is it an update for overwatch 1?
it’s its own game, although some features from overwatch 1 can carry on to overwatch 2 players. There is also cross multiplayer between both games.
It’s basically a DLC, except it has its own game instead, since the update given to the visuals , story etc, is far to big to be considered only a DLC
You will have to pay, to get the PvE aspect of the game, and most likely to get access to some cosmetics.
If you don’t want to play PvE , you can simply stick with the current version and still play with friends who are using Ow2

This isn’t stupid at all 
as the cyber ninja puts it. It’s it’s own game, but some aspects of OW2 will be carried over to the first game and the servers are cross compatable.
I believe if i’m understanding, certain PvP aspects such as the new “push” game play as well as the cosmetics (I think) will be updated with ow1 but the PvE will be it’s own separate entity and there for a DLC since like Genji said, it’s too big of a file to merge with OW.
I know it’s just repeating, but that’s what I understand for the most part
Basically dlc, but to not confuse new players, it’s marketed as a sequel.
