[Suggestion] Queue for Competitive Map Modes

Put simply. Separate the Comp Modes for each ‘map type’.

How It Would Work - Step by Step: You load the game. You click play. You click competitive. You tick your competitive mode which you want to queue for. You click Queue.

Reasons why: Expand the Comp Content, Freshness, Different Heroes, New Comp Maps.

Competitive Rating: You get a rating for each mode and an overall rating.

Why?: It would allow players to focus on a mode they enjoy, while giving every player regardless of their favourite mode a chance to rank up.

Modes

Assault
Escort
Hybrid
Control
Capture the Flag
3v3 Elimination
6v6 Elimination

The UI

As above. You click play, you click competitive. You are then granted the option to tick the modes you want to play. Then you click QUEUE.

Why - Explained

Expand the Comp Content - I play a lot of OW at the moment and it dawned on me that the competitive system could be used to encourage players who play different modes than the standard ones used in the current competitive system (A/E/H/C). Allowing players to queue for, and earn rewards from, competitive CtF/3v3/6v6 would allow players to queue for more content that they enjoy, rather than being limited to playing non-competitive modes (like 3v3/6v6).

Freshness - It also helps to break up the current competitive system and allows for players who enjoy those modes, to try something new and to earn extra rewards, like competitive points.

Different Heroes - It would potentially allow underused heroes to be played more, as they might face more situations where they are extremely useful. Like CtF.

New Comp Maps - It would also encourage Blizzard to develop new maps for Comp Modes that have very few maps, like CtF. Or even re-use some of the older maps to suit the purpose of the mode.

Competitive Rating - Explained

As explained above, players would get a rating for each mode and an overall rating. It does NOT take into account comp modes which you do not complete the 10 placement matches. For example:
Assault: 2341
Escort: 2567
Hybrid: 2459
Control: 2108
CtF: 0 <Didn’t Play>
3v3 Elimination: 3098
6v6 Elimination: 2185
Overall: 2459 Rating (2341+2567+2459+2108+3098+2185 = 14758 / 6 = 2459.)

Rewards

Currently, you get rewards for each season you complete your place matches in and depending upon your rating.

This would still work for the Overall rating; if you placed in the 2500-3000 bracket, you would still get around 500 Comp Points (if memory serves me right).

You would also get extra Comp Points for each Map Mode you placed in and depending upon what your rank was. These points would be 1/7 of the points you would earn for your Overall rating. IE, if you placed in the 2500-3000 bracket in the Escort map, you would earn around 71 additional Comp Points (500/7)

This would encourage players to place in different map modes, but also give extra Comp Points so players can purchase more Golden Guns (which are a very old system and not as prestigious as they once were)

A few issues :

  • Longer queue times
  • Someone could play just one mode to have only one rating and maximize their winrate.
  • Encourages players to OTP if they can choose what type of map they can play

Jeff during an interview recently said that the devs didn’t expect people to OTP that much and you’re supposed to switch, making people play the map they want basically says “Ok go OTP on Lucio on Control maps” for instance.

  • I honestly don’t mind waiting for longer queues if I can get into a game mode I enjoy. (Which happens to be more escort maps, rather than control the point maps).
  • There is nothing wrong with players doing that; they might miss on the extra rewards, but it would be clear that they only played one game mode. Especially if they queue up for another game mode.
  • Not necessarily, hero changing will always (and should always be) an integral part of Overwatch. It will always depend on team comps and playstyles. But if someone is a OTP, let them be.

Longer queue times can be a rather big issue.
An Overwatch match doesn’t last that long, and having a queue system that have people wait even ½ the duration can be problematic.
Generally I don’t believe people are patient enough to spent 30-50% of their time waiting.

I know they are talking role queue here, which may cause an even greater effect on the queue times. But the issue is similar.

I watched both parts of his interview with Unit Lost. Definitely a good interview, though Jeff looks a bit ragged

I agree wholeheartedly it would likely increase queue times. Again, it depends on whether that increase is worth being able to play the maps you like.

It may be worth for some people, but for others it wont.

2CP for example is rather unpopular, but there’s still people who enjoy playing this mode, The queue time for these people would probably be insane, especially at GM due to the low amount of players at this level.

At least this way, Blizzard would be able to see which maps and modes are popular. So they can address the problems with the less popular modes.

More so, splitting the maps up this way might allow players to see more niche characters used; because of the change in situations and modes.

I think blizzard already have plenty of data to suggest what modes/maps are popular or not.

If you see an increased use of niche heroes by splitting the maps, it’s probably because niche heroes are generally better in some maps, and the people who want to play these heroes will just queue for these maps.
In any map they aren’t useful in, you may see a decline in the use of these heroes instead, as the 1tricks will stay away from them.
